Nokia N97 firmware updated to v12.0.024

A minor firmware update, version 12.0.024, has been released for the Nokia N97. The updates fixes a number of bugs and improves performance and stability. The firmware is being made available through both Nokia Software Updater (part of PC Suite) and OTA on the device. The firmware is currently available for SIM-free model; as usual the availability of the firmware will vary by market and device variant.

Read on in the full article.

A bit of a shame about OTA not working yet, at least on my version (australian, unlocked)

I am definitely noticing that navigating around the menus feels quicker. And i think they fixed the annoying slider unlocking bugginess.

So I'm pretty happy

OTA ?
I haven't read of one person who has gotten this update without a pc yet.
"No updates available" shown for me on device using euro 1 product code.

Hope you are right and it's available via OTA soon as linux still isn't supported by nokia.
And i've no access to a windows pc.
I'll wait patiently-ish

My Italian N97 show me the update, but I prefer to install it with PC.
With this update there are a lot of bug which are fixed, for example the zoom with the image and message menu.
Now everything works like a charm!

There was loads of moaning on here about the 5800 V30 update not making significant changes, but the touch response on the V30 5800 is way better than before. So, look out for things that aren't obvious.

As per usual Nokia UK have dropped the ball and not released this version for the generic UK model yet.

Do we have to wait two weeks or two months? Place your bets!

Well I'm in the UK on a debranded Voda model and i have the update. Had to be done on the PC though. Navigation seems a bit quicker. Wish it had cured the terrible signal reception problem but I fear this maybe hardware and not software issue. Loving the N97, now I just need a phone to make calls on!

RM-505 here. No update available for PC, OTA and onboard SW update.

That's wierd. I see huge difference in signal reception between v11 and v12. In v12 signal doesn't fluctuate as much.

Just to re-iterate the update will become available at different time for different variants. If it doesn't work for you you yet, be patient (not very helpful I know)...

I have just updated and have to say the menus are lightning fast now. Very impressive!

I am confused. Went to the web - type in my product code and it tells me no update available.

From my phone - type *#0000# and at the options menu selected "check sofware updates"-> no updates available.

Ran the Software update application and it shows 3 updates. 1 is phone memory and I can only update it via PC.

So is there or is there no update for my variant?

Called Nokia Careline and they use the first method which they revert no update. I asked them to check with the service centre and they responded - they do not have the telephone number. No help there.

regards

After many years of happy, dedicated Nokia following, I've sent my N97 back for a refund. It was way too buggy, slow and ill-conceived. I was enormously disappointed with it. I now have an HTC Hero and it has really opened my eyes to how good Android is. For a newcomer OS on phones, it is stunningly good. Symbian should have been way ahead in this game but it now looks to me like it has a lot of catching up to do. But what really surprises me is that the N97 was announced nearly a year ago and yet the software doesn't look even a year advanced from the N95. There has to be some serious UI porting issues for it to take so long to put a new skin together. And still, it is way short of complete with a touch interface that lacks imagination and flair. There's not even a consistent scrolling technique used throughout the phone. What about the keyboard? It was the keyboard that really appealed to me on the N97. I always thought my N95 was nearly perfect and only really lacked a keyboard. Well, the N97 keyboard was awful. I ended up using the virtual keyboard most of the time because it was quicker. Now with the virtual qwerty keyboard on the HTC Hero, I'm faster still. It's very clever. Having trained it (takes 1 minute), it now automatically corrects the words I miss-type. I'm fast and accurate enough to use it for serious note taking. Then there's the Android Market. Ovi is full of so much dross, you browse it for ages looking for something useful and leave disappointed. And even most of the rubbish has a price tag. The Android Market is stuffed with really good applications and the vast majority of them are free. It is remarkable how quickly developers have come on-side, but then this is a Linux based environment and developers love Linux. So, after 15 years of fairly dedicated Nokia use, farewell.

Obviously an "Ex-Nokia User" does not have any interest in a firmware update for the N97. I do not have any interest in "how much better is Android". So please keep on topic!

The update is still not available for me (generic, Switzerland) but I will be happy when I get it. It seems to fix some of the issues I encountered. I think the N97 is still kind of beta (much like the N95 at the beginning - anyone remembering out of memory errors while browsing 😉). A bug fix release is a step into the right direction. For the next major firmware update I would hope to get integrated VoIP back and also integrated Nokia messaging.

Hmm....Why are you checking this web site since you are satisfied with your HTC hero? Perhaps having second thoughts and hoping that there is a FW upgrade that meets your needs that the Hero cannot?

I posted an earlier comment. Any one tried to upgrade even though after checking the website using the code method indicates that no update is available?

Update is available on NSU for my originally Vodafone branded, but now debranded (0570817: RM-505 EMEA EURO QW1 Black), but not OTA. Looks like the changelog indicates a fix for OTA updating though, so maybe Nokia hasn't enabled it yet and we'll get OTA updates on the next release.

Applied the update successfully via NSU, however after the automatic reboot the screen wouldn't unlock. Had to remove the battery to kick it back to life. Now working OK. The speed does seem generally faster, especially the Messaging application and when unlocking. Touch screen is possibly a bit more responsive too. There still seem to be a few intermittent bugs around the screen lock slider even though I've read most people seem to think these are cured. Definitely improved greatly though. Maybe next update will fix it properly. About an extra 10MB RAM available on mine at 55MB after a reboot. May try doing a hard reset to clear any crud left around and see if it fixes the screen lock slide properly as others are reporting...

BTW Here's an off topic question to ponder that has been bouncing round my head for a few weeks now. Has anyone considered that with the release of Symbian^2 and it being open source, Nokia may be planning on slipping this into the N97 at some point in the future? Is this what they were talking about when they announced they had big plans for the software on the N97 just before the phone was released?

Glad to see them addressing the performance of the device. Now how about full kinetic scrolling throughout the entire UI?

I am a nokia fan too. But quite disappointed with n97. Hopefully they could release a phone size like iphone or omnia 2. It would be great in n series. N97 is so heavy. lol

It started broadly on-topic and wasn't intended as quite such a rant. And just because I don't have an N97 any longer doesn't mean I'm not interested in them and Nokia still.

I read a lot of phone sites. A FW upgrade isn't going to help the N97, I'm afraid.

From the list of bug-fixes, it doesn't seem to cover anything on the problem of the GPS-signal dropping out. That could mean the problem is hardware related and not firmware. We'll see when I get mine back from repair

This FW update is minor indeed. Better 3G reception and snaps when talking are gone. Flagship, lol.

Down they go. It's sad though.

I have just updated to the new firmware and it is definitely faster navigating through the menus. After the update when the phone restarted I couldn't unlock it, I seen someone else had the same problem. I had to take the battery out and restart, it is working fine now. Haven't noticed any other improvements. Hopefully they have sorted out some of the bugs as mine was crashing quite a lot over the last few days and only today had to do a hard reset as the phone would not turn on. Just stuck at the nokia screen on Startup.

Will see over the next few days if it has improved it.

i am from austria ....n97 FW 11.0.021 simlocked to dreiAustria - when i will make the ota update it tells me - no update..... with the pc-suite it is the same--no update-- but i hope and think that this is the truth: "as usual the availability of the firmware will vary by market and device variant"

Upgrade fail.....
Hi,

I have an ex Voda debranded (following http://nokia.nigelcoldwell.co.uk/firmware.htm instructions, with 0570817 code) N97, and when I try NSU it tells me that there are no updates available even though I am only on 11.0.021 (RM-505)...?

Any ideas?

my idea is that your phone is sim-locked ......in topic is written "realeased for SIM-free model
