V20 - Something may be afoot

The file I check for updates on the nokia site (used by http://europe.nokia.com/get-support-and-software/download-software/device-software-update) is suddenly blank...

http://download.releasenotes.nokia.com/RM-505_core_en.xml returns a 404 error

It's also returning a 404 (file not found) and showing a default message on the Nokia update site...

UPDATE: further digging, however, reveals that the same files are also missing for other product codes (ie N95 RM-421) so could be something else going on...

Dagnammit, all the xml files are working again as before... reporting 12.0.024

Website admin mess up perhaps? Dunno...

*sigh*

had me hopes up there...

I think that the arrival of this new FW version is as eagerly awaited as teh phone was itself.

Lets just hope it delivers on a higher level than the phone did :frown:

dog-man I think there's a lot of people, worldwide, that may need Anger Management courses thanks to Nokia. 😡

Mantra: "It's only a phone... It's only a phone... It's only a phone...
It's only a phone that cost 500 and is sub standard...!"

Damn! It almost worked.

Rather oddly, I can see the XML from my work PC, but not from my laptop (my dev server) or the davecozens.com server...

I think nokia have blocked me! *paranoid*

Would not surprise me in the slightest.

Since Nokia are a marketing company and not a product company these days, chances are they are waiting for the SEE 2009 in London and/or the official launch of the N97 mini before they attempt to release v20 in a blaze of glory. "Look guys, we gave you the firmware the phone should have launched with, and only 5 months late!"

This is what I get>>>>>>>

now that is interesting...

implies perhaps they're using a cluster of servers and some are missing the files... or they're really missing but some ISPs have it cached...

what do you both get if you go to
http://europe.nokia.com/get-support-and-software/download-software/device-software-update ?

I'd expect celios to get
Great new features
Updated applications
Performance improvements
and dog-man to get
Improved software update using device
etc...
I get what you expected Celios to get.

>>Great new features

dog-man

a quote from another forum.

Just seen on Nokia forum RDA that one of the N97's has been updated to V20.0.019. That is a good sign that it's coming soon.

Oh, that's quality...

The Nokia website uses the XML file I pointed at to get version info based on RM-NNN product codes.

If you browse it directly you can see it, but when you use the nokia site it doesn't (and shows the default text instead).

hehehe... that's kinda funny...

What's that?

dog-man

RDA = Remote Device Access, it's a service Nokia run that allows developers to test their apps on real devices over the internet.

If it's appearing on RDA, it's a good sign it should be with us within the next 5-7 days.

as well.

I hardly use the camera now as I'm scared of scratching the lens. So the photo app doesn't get much use on my N97!

why not try my easy fix? its on my site, so easy to do and works a treat.

I have, and thank you very much for that, it's the simplest and most effective way of fixing the immediate problem (which I think it a manufacturing problem related to tolerances).

Originally the plastic sliding lens cover was actually making contact with the lens and damaging it, and your fix has solved that problem. Now I am getting small particles of dirt under the lens in the tiny gap between the lens and the cover. This is more a design fault (a sliding cover should be at least 2mm or so above the surface it's floating over).

I've given up on the N97 anyway. Will be buying a new Android phone (most likely the Motorola Droid if/when it is made available in the UK) and if that is better will offload the N97.

oh i see, sorry to hear that your still having probs, i will be moving to the n900 when its had a few firmware updates and has some good apps out for it.

Get your tape ready for the lens cover then...!

celios wrote:Get your tape ready for the lens cover then...!

lol i think they have sorted it as the lens on the n900 sits back from the rest of the mechanism.

Biggzy wrote:lol i think they have sorted it as the lens on the n900 sits back from the rest of the mechanism.

Hopefully they've sorted it. But I can't help remembering that NONE of the N97 reviews mentioned the 2 biggest problems... I would give any new Nokia phone a few months to bed in with the beta testers (sorry I mean early adopters) before taking the plunge.

OK lads (and lasses) what is the popular consensus of opinion as to when v20 is now likely to be released for the Euro (unbranded) n97's?

I mean, can I go to the pub this lunchtime or tonight and not miss it? 😊

Well its like standing at a bus stop, bus dont come so you light a ciggy up and guess what? The damn bus comes along, so if you can, goto the pub coz then we may get new fw lol
