Hi lasikie, what guide are you following? I've removed all the Jaf stuff since i debranded (foolishly) so i don't even know where to find the right version.

Earlier in this thread http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/forum/showpost.php?p=426079&postcount=24

and this http://www.symbian-freak.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=35935

Have to do a bit of searching for certain files

Or download them here http://www.megaupload.com/?d=VJ3V1AM8 (Please remove if I ain't allowed to post these.)

I'll try and put it as simple as I can.

First get the USB Cable Driver version: 7.1.20.0 (not 100% sure if you need these exact ones but they worked for me.)

Plug phone into pc and let windows install the drivers for your phone

Then get navifirm and download the required firmware too C:\Program Files\Nokia\Phoenix\Products\RM-505

Next install JAF 1.98.62 (don't install the drivers that comes with this when asked)

Download JAF 1.98.64 and copy the ini files from this into your JAF 1.98.62 folder. (Whilst your here if your running Windows 7 make sure to set jaf.exe to run in compatibility vista sp2 mode)

Search and download PKEY V5 (V3 if running vista/windows7, and again change compatibility mode)(Some antivirus report this as a virus I chose to ignore and still have a clean system)

Run PKEY and click on go, press ok when it asks about box drivers. Jaf should then be loaded for you.

Select BB5 tab at the top.

Check Manual flash, Dead USB, Factory Set and Normal mode.

Uncheck CRT 308

Check Use ini and a box full of different phone models will pop up, find your phone highlight it and press ok.

You should then see your phone and firmware your going too in the drop down box.

Check Change also product code (Just in case 😉)

Your now ready to flash, first unplug your phone from pc remove battery and press the power button down with no battery in to remove any left over power.

Put your battery in and press flash on JAF

Press OK and plug your phone into pc.

When Jaf says PRESS POWER ON NOW! do it (Usually happens instantly after pressing ok.

The new Firmware will then be installed, just leave it alone untill it beeps and says done twice on JAF

Enjoy
I think I have covered everything, if you need any more help just ask and I'll try the best I can to help.

Good luck

Couldnt find the 1.98.64 ini files, but i remember not being able to before, you just have to manually select the mcu, ppm cnt, ape.

I dont know if i'm timing it wrong, but tried a dozen times now and keep getting searching for phone...Not found

Official Jaf site 😉

http://support.phone-tools.cn/files/JAF_Main_Software/

It can be a little tricky you have to press ok, plug phone in and turn it on all at pretty much the same time.

Have you connected your phone to the pc before hand and let the drivers install?

Thanks Lasikie.
Soz for being angry at you.

It worked. Your step by step guide worked so I have saved it for future reference.

All I needed to know, to flash a working phone, was that it needed to be off when you flash it.
Seems simple, but i'm used to plugging in bricked phones that flash straight away.

So, thanks to Lasikie, the main tips to remember to flash a working phone are...

* Your now ready to flash, first unplug your phone from pc remove battery and press the power button down with no battery in to remove any left over power.

* Put your battery in and press flash on JAF

* Press OK and plug your phone into pc.

Thank you for your help.
Everyone, seriously, save Lasikie's guide to flashing and any time Nokia announce anything download it straight from Navi Firm and do it yourself.
At least then you know you can reflash and fix it yourself, not rely on their crap programs that don't work.

MrAaronVenn wrote:Thanks Lasikie.
I will try this now.

But really, all you needed to say was "TOTALLY UNPLUG PHONE, TAKE OUT BATTERY AND SWITCH BACK ON AT A CERTAIN TIME"

With Bricked phones, I've never ever done anything like that.
I plug it is, load the ini, press flash and it reflashes it.
None of this unplugging without battery business.

I'll give it a go now, thanks for giving us the idea of what we were doing wrong ie: not having the phone on & running when trying to flash it

Np's, that part is mentioned in the guides so I was presuming you was doing that and still getting errors.

Lasikie, thats i nicecimple explantaion, one question though,

Then get navifirm and download the required firmware too C:\Program Files\Nokia\Phoenix\Products\RM-505

did you create this folder, as it wasn't present on my pc
Vista Laptop.

Yes create the folder yourself, has to be exact.

And, MrAaronVenn, no hard feelings, just glad you got it to work.

Thanks Lasikie, got it on the 3rd attempt, now restoring my backup. I should really put all those programs together in one rar file and upload it for AAS users with a guide! I had 8 tabs open at one point hehe

GREAT Lasikie !!!! :icon14: :icon14:

Ive been following this thread since last night when tried my first attempt (I missed the count by now) to upgrade my f****ed N97 and got the infamous "Software update failed" over and over !!

I feel happier now knowing the problem can be solved using JAF, but before facing a "Warranty voiding" method Id like to research a little more.

Browsing around I discovered that NSU stores a bunch of temporary files in the "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Datos de programa\Nokia\Nokia Service Layer\A" folder. Around there, I managed to fin a log file with some "interesting" diagnose entries:

The descriptive error message is in spanish (because this is my local PC language) but it says something like "Device couldnt be detected. Follow this silly and totally useless steps to get to the same place in a few hours" 😃

The same happened on 3 different PCs, one of them with English as the local language.

@MrAaronVenn: Before having this problem with NSU, have you previously flashed the phone using JAF ???

Ive never did it, but I had to send the phone to the seller to check a few days after buying it (before realising I wasnt alone on this leaky Nokia flagship) and they told me they "reflashed" the phone (of course they told me everything will be fine now !!)

Im now suspecting they did it with JAF :con? instead NSU and now NSU refuses to recognize the previous ROM image.

Does it sound likely to anyone ???

I think I have covered everything, if you need any more help just ask and I'll try the best I can to help.

Good luck

Very good guide but what about the 'green icons' MCU + PPM + CNT?

Also what does the CRT 308 do?

Hi Alberto,

Here's what happened to me.

I bought my N97 from Hong Kong about a month before it was out in Australia.

The minute the first firmware update was available, I did it using NSU and it bricked my phone. Literally. No hard reset or anything could fix it.
( im pretty sure my rant from this can be found in these forums )

So I went to my local Nokia Care Centre.

I told them how NSU wrecked it and they had a look at it.
A few days later I went back and they said they couldn't reflash it because
"they didn't have the HK firmware for it" so which I replied
"It's APAC firmware, they're the same" and took it back off them.

Over the course of this, I'd been chatting with guys on this exact forum for ways to reflash using JAF. Thankfully, there was a "Flash Bricked Phones" forum and I was able to update.

If I had have left it to the Nokia Care Centre, I wouldn't have the phone today.

So this latest update, I went to the do the good boy way and use NSU.
It didn't work. It said that stupid error about it not being plugged in.
I tried it on OVI, it said it was an Internal Error.

Then Lasikie taught me how to flash my working N97 and I seriously have no intention of ever using the NSU/OVI again for Firmware Updates.

JAF has always worked. And since Lasikie told me about working phones, I've since updated my old 5800 too just for fun.

My warranties mean nothing in Australia anyway since I get my phones from HK months before they're out here, so that doesn't concern me.

I have no idea what your file list meant, but seriously just flash it with JAF.
It's easy, fun, takes about minutes, and then you have crisp fresh new firmware.

Cheers for JAF/AAS Forums/Lasikie
Jeers Nokia for being idiots

Hi Aaron,

Thanks for taking time to reply me. Now I am pretty sure we are in the same boat (they insist on call it "flagship" 😮😮😮 ) I am in Argentina (the N97 is not officially sold nor supported here) and my phone come from Miami. Although it is a RM-507 (NAM) I believe we are beeing victims of the same stupid internal Nokia policy regarding firmware upgrades.

Reading your message now I am pretty sure the technician (hired by the "importer" who brought my N97 from Miami) used JAF to flash my phone, an now NSU refuses to upgrade it.

I wanted to know this because is one of the final drops that I needed to realise my glass is full 😡😡 I will start kicking at my seller door asking to return this piece of sh***ty Smart(?)phone !!! It still is "theoretically" covered by a importer 6-month warranty that he voided itself when flashed the phone with JAF. I dont feel like having to go through the process of returning them a bricked phone after trying to flash it myself. I prefer to let that risk to them.

Thanks a lot again for your time.

Alberto

The green icons are for you to maunually select the firmware bits and bobs, easier to just copy the ini's over and let it select them for you.

I have no idea what CRT308 doe's.

Cheers for the thanks but there is no need i've just used what I have learned and stuck it in one post. We all have AAS and symbianfreak to thank for that.

Well, it seems Nokia have failed us Brits once again. Their promise of having v20 rolled out by the end of October was unfulfilled. Sure it was done for pretty much everyone else in the world, but the UK have fallen short of this big update 😡

just changed my UK product code to the EURO one and i've updated. the font is now bold 😞 as compared to the UK font. also on V20 the kinetic scrolling is not that good compared to my iphone or blackberry storm !!!! also when i entered my gmail acc, it crashed whilst downloading my mails(3787 mails) that i've to remove the email settings and instead use my gmail account on another phone. anyone having problems like that and with the scrolling?

Debranded my 3 handset yesterday using the JAF method, and installed V20.

I can't say there's an enormous difference... although perhaps things like stability improvements will become apparent once I've used it for a while.

The thumbnails of album art don't seem to be working for me in music player. It's visible in the "now playing" screen, but not in the list of albums (well, it is on one or two albums but not the majority). Does anyone else have this problem?

Also - I have about 20GB of music on there and it seems to struggle with this (can take quite a long time to switch between lists etc). I'd hoped V20 might improve this but it doesn't seem to have. What's the point of giving us 32GB memory if the device doesn't seem capable of handling it happily?

It looks like the camera application has been tweaked a bit... I get the impression it focuses a bit more quickly now. Hopefully this also means the various camera bugs in V11 have gone for good.

By the way, when I flashed the phone using JAF, it got to a point where it said something like "pooling phone" but then it lost connection (I think something funny was going on with drivers; windows was trying to install one or something) and couldn't reconnect, so it abandoned the procedure.

On my phone a screen appeared saying "Local Mode".

I turned the phone off & on again and luckily everything seemed to be fine - with new V20 in place.

I'm just wondering whether there was some final part of the flashing process that didn't happen, that should have happened, that might cause me problems in the future? Does anyone know about this?

Hello. I'm trying to flash new firmware to 5800 with JAF. I followed Lasikie's tutorial, but after I power on the phone, I get the following log from JAF:

Phone rebooted but not in flash mode...

JAF can read my phone product code and let me change it, it just won't let me flash the firmware. The problem is it always tries to reboot the phone, then before the phone even wakes up (it take a very long time for the phone to restart), JAF will report "Phone rebooted but not in flash mode". The phone itself is literally unchanged (although it looks like dead before it wakes up itself).

It seems the problem is that the phone cannot get into "flash mode". But I have no idea what causes it and how to proceed. I couldn't find any helpful info on the web either. So please, help me!

Why use JAF? If you are de-branding, NSS/NSU is so much simpler? If you are not de-branding, the NSU is the official way to flash FW!

I tried with NSU almost one whole night, but have the same problems that Lasikie and MrAaronVenn have experienced with this program. That's why I decided to use Lasikie's guide and use JAF because I was very hopeful of their results, but unfortunately I cannot succeed with this program either :frown:

Unfortunately, some user's PC's seem to have problems with NSU etc.
It is worth disabling any Security software on your PC (firewall, virus checker, etc) before launching NSU.
Also, if you were using a PC in your office, then the IT dept's proxy server may be blocking access.

Assuming you are not on Windows 7 (not officially supported by NSU), then you may have to talk nicely to a friend with a PC or Laptop and ask if you can install NSU and try to update your phone.

Thanks for the advice. I'm using Windows XP SP3. There is no problem with NSU downloading firmware from the internet. The problem is after that when the phone is to be flashed. I've also tried to update the firmware with OVI Suite, but it also gives Internal error.

If someone have any idea why my phone wont go into flash mode when trying to update it with JAF, please help!

hi

i have not been on here much and not for a while 😞

after running NSU the program told me that an update was available v20, so i downloaded the 146Meg and proceeded with the update, from there it keeps failing at the updating stage and says 'plug usb directly into pc and try again' still no joy????

then i came here 😊 skipped from page 1 to here page 8

is i correct that the update is not for uk phones?? and is this the reason it wont update??

what a pain if the above is correct, NSU is not that good it should have a little foot note on the install screen saying 'BTW if you in the UK TOUGH SH[T'

steve

I have just read all the previous pages and i am sort of glad it failed!

maybe someone can help me? the reason that i tried the update in the first place is that my phone shows full signal but when i try and make a call i get 'connection error' message. this has been happening for the last 2 days. i am at home and in a good reception area

any ideas?

cheers
