Unfortunately that is not an unlocked phone, which is what most folks are looking for. Might even be branded. :icon13:

Popped into O2 today to ask about the N8, they are in stock in my local O2 shop, according to the firendly lad in there they 'have tons of them in there'... I explained that I was mightily disappointed with the N97 and if he could have spoken we all know what he would have said, when asked about the N8 he said 'it has great hardware... but it runs Symbian'. There was a slight silence and he went on to tell me about some other great phones they had in...

I want to get it, but im 'very' undecided at the moment. I'm certainly not paying over 40 quid a month for 18 months, 'IF' I do go for it, i'll buy it on PAYG for 330 quid and just use my simplicity SIM in it...

I think i'll watch this space...

Cancelled my order from Nokia and got one from UK Tesco for 305 as you get 25 worth of points with the N8 😊

Bascombe wrote:dstokoe, how do you think it compares to the htc desire? I've got one of those currently after upgrading a bit prematurely, but I'm thinking of selling it on to get an n8. My main gripes are that it feels a bit cheap and flimsy (bizarrely for such a high end device); the camera lens cover seems pretty poor (one tip I've seen for improving picture quality involves removing it), and the battery is far from ideal. I know the internet on the desire will probably be better than that currently on the n8, but other than that, what's your experience of the two?

Cheers,

Bascombe

There's not much in it to be honest and you've mentioned the Desire weaknesses - N8 feels like the more premium handset. Assuming you're comfortable with Symbian (which some might see as a big if) the main issue IS the web browser - no comparison with Android in my opinion and the sooner Nokia sort it the better although Opera is an improvement it's still nowhere near as good. The lower resolution of the screen also holds the N8 back while browsing with text being unreadable when you're zoomed out - in general use it's a lovely screen though. The Nokia battery life does seem a fair bit better too.

It's fair to say that it takes more work to get the N8 to do some of the things Android does (syncing with Google services and general browsing being the main ones) but for me, now it's set up its worth it for the better phone performance, quality build and it does what I need to do but can see it wouldn't be for everyone. So far so good but I'm keeping the HTC as well just in case!

We got another N8 on an upgrade at the weekend. Vodafone wanted 140 plus 45 a month for 24 months for the upgrade in store, or offered a phone for 50 plus 35 a month for 24 months on the phone, or offered a free phone for 35 a month on their website.

In the end, we went to carphone warehouse and got a free phone on a 30 a month 24-month contract. We have a few less minutes per month now, but still more than we use, and unlimited sms and the bundled data. It's 15 a month less than it was for the last 18 months, so quite a saving.

They did it as a vodafone upgrade - I didn't know they could do that, but all I needed was a debit card for proof of address and to wait about for a few minutes while they did the upgrade bit.

Cheers for that. Had gmail and calendar syncing through mfe on my n95 and n97 which worked fine, with the exception of there being no inbuilt html support, hopefully it'd be an improved experience on the m8 (how are you currently sending gmail?). Unfortunately the desire will have to go to finance the n8,so still withering. Have you tried WiFi with the n8? Can't get the desire to connect to home network, think its because its wireless n.

I use MfE too, for email and calendar anyway, and it works well. I don't sync my contacts as they hardly ever change but I've read it works fine.

I found that using the Nokia Gmail was slow to collect mail and made the phone freeze or stutter occasionally while polling - no such issue with MfE. Phone has stopped it's re-booting since switching too. Unfortunately, there seems to be an issue where you can't reply or create a new Gmail (it just kicks you out of the app) so hopefully that will get fixed in the next firmware. Luckily I tend not to actually send mail from my phone very often and*HTML mail downloads ok despite a security notification popping up.

The Desire has Google syncing down to a fine art (as you'd expect) and the N8 isn't quite there yet but it's fine for my needs. WiFi on the Desire is fine for me but you're right that is doesn't have 'n' - there's probably a setting on your router that says something like 'mixed mode' to allow connections from 'g' and 'b' equipment too then it should work.*

Hope that helps.

Cheers again. Switching the router down to b/g only does indeed let the desire connect. A couple of my other gripes regarding the desire have been the in call volume - (seems quite low in comparison to my old nokias), and the ringing volume (again, a bit on the low side). I'm guessing the n8 is up to Nokias usual standards with regard to such things?

Thanks again.

Yep, the Nokia seems to ring louder and sound quality through the earpiece and the speaker are much better than the Desire. As is usually the case, the Nokia 'phone' hardware is very good 😊

Good to know. The desire is definitely being recycled (201 via o2) but still not sure about the extra investment the n8 will need (currently back using the n95). Time (and bank balances) will tell! Thanks again for your views, been really helpful.

Well I've had mine a week now and I'm going back to CPW with it tomorrow. I've had more Nokias than I can remember; 7650, 6630, N80, N95, 5800 and more. Always thought they were the best smartphones around and when the iphone came out there was no way I'd pay good money for such a crippled piece of hardware, despite its obvious attractions.

About a year ago, while a 5800 user, my work gave me an iPhone 3gs. It lay on the coffee table for a few weeks as I continued to use my 5800 which then had to go in for repair. When I got it back I couldn't bring myself to use it again and continued to use the iphone due mainly to the capacitive screen, initially. I just couldn't bear to use resistive again and anyway, the iPhone browser and mail are superb, especially the Exchange mail.

Despite this, I couldn't wait for Nokia to bring out a new phone with capacitive screen and all the features I was missing. FM Radio, Flash, real bluetooth, delivery reports, etc, etc. I was prepared to pay for a sim free job, despite getting a free (now the new 4) iPhone.

So last Friday I bought the N8 and for the first couple of hours thought it was brilliant. A week later however here is my experience:

  • It has crashed every day, often several times in one day. No apparent pattern.
  • The same emails are downloaded over and over again (not Exchange though)
  • Exchange does not handle meeting invitations.
  • Apps described as free in the store are not, in fact it is a trial, e.g.Nokia Goals. (was this not a trick in the old !Download?)
  • Other apps are just Java junk. Prompting for network access, slow and clunky.
  • Can't find a decent football scores app. e.g. of the quality of Sky on the iPhone.
  • Best reminder is not working correctly on it, will vibrate but no sound for a missed text message.
  • The RBS banking application does not work as it has not been updated.

I appreciate the last item is not Nokia's problem but it's just another example of not being able to get some basic applications for the N8. The ESPN soccer app is another example of junk. The "news" it displays is about 4 months out of date adn the "live" scores appear to be from last season, Celtic v Rapid Vienna.

I presume that the crashing indicates a faulty unit as I don't see anyone else being afflicted as badly and I expect to be offered a replacement. However, the lack of quality apps is a real problem. If I'd never used an iphone I probably would never have noticed.

Oh, and Ovi Suite will not synchronise automatically on my home machine but will at work. Exact same operating system on both.

My wife bought an N8 last week from the Carphone Warehouse. I think she paid 365 for it and it is unlocked and with no contract. Seemed like an ok deal to me. I'm still waiting to replace my iPhone with the E7/N9 depending how long I'm willing to wait. 😉

@tulloch

You're not the only one with a crashing N8, mine did it quite a lot until I stopped using the Nokia email client. I deleted the mailbox and set it up again but declined the Nokia terms & conditions which then sets it up without it having to go through Nokia's servers - and it's reliable now and doesn't crash. I agree that you shouldn't have to do that though.

I know an update has been sent out but not sure exactly what it's fixing.

Really happy with certain things with the N8,but theres one section on the N8 that really puzzles me an loads of others i have seen on Nokia Conversations,i have had alot of Nokia mobiles an if you put Tracks an Images on my mobiles you could delete them easily, but when i try to delete tracks on My N8 theres no option to delete the track ,Why as Nokia done this on N8 an made it so complicated as people might get annoyed with this an not give the N8 a good name an people will keep away from the N8,just email Nokia Care for help with this problem

To delete a music track, simply long press on the title until a little menu appears then select Delete. You can long press pictures as well or for multiple images mark them with a tick and select Delete from the Options menu.

There you go.

Thanks for that. I may try it if stability does not improve or if it continues to download the same emails over and over again. Good tip.

I gave it a reprieve today after the update to see if that sorted out the crashing, so did not return to CPW.

Good luck.

Just to add, if you set it up like that you need to dig around in the sync settings of the mailbox to ensure looks for mail in a timely fashion - I'm pretty sure the default fetch periods are rubbish.

Thanks for the tip. Have bypassed the Nokia servers and the (BT) mail seems to be working fine, i.e. it does not keep downloading the same emails again and again. Fetching suits me fine.

Any idea what the "After notification" option is in the sync frequency options?
