Calling All Innovators – The final call for entries approaches
It’s the final month before Forum Nokia’s Calling All Innovators competition closes. The competition offers a significant opportunity for developers to get global exposure for their innovative application or widget. In this developer section feature, I talk to Srikanth Raju, head of marketing for Forum Nokia, to find out more.
Ovi Store app available to download from Ovi Store mobile website
Ovi Store can be accessed from almost any Nokia phone by just going to store.ovi.com on the phone's web browser, but certain phones also have an Ovi Store application available which lets you use Ovi Store much more easily. Some people have managed to find the Ovi Store application available through the Download! icon, but it now appears that you can also download the app directly from the store.ovi.com website. The availability of the app seems to currently vary depending on which model you have and which country you live in, and the easiest way to find out if you can get it is to visit the Ovi Store mobile site and see if the link appears for you. See the screens below for details.
Bounce Boing Voyage for N-Gage now available with accelerometer-based tilt controls
The rather brilliant N-Gage-exclusive 3D platform game Bounce Boing Voyage has been updated to include motion control on those phones which have accelerometers, where you can tilt the phone to control the main character (or you can use the traditional button controls if you prefer). If you've already bought the game you can get the updated version free, and if you haven't bought the game you can buy it from the N-Gage showroom tab. Instructions for updating existing games are below.
Dev Week – Sensitive Java, updated themes, and location aware advertising
Something for just about everyone this week: the Mobile Sensor API for Java ME on the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, an update for S60 5th Edition theme creation, and an extended service for mobile advertising from NAVTEQ.
Spore Origins is out now on the N-Gage platform
EA's life simulator Spore Origins is now available through the N-Gage application, just open it on your phone, go to the Showroom tab, select "Options" and then "Update Now". Alternatively select "See All Games". You can see a list of N-Gage-compatible phones (and more about the platform) on All About N-Gage's FAQ page.
Ovi Store launching soon?
Many people have noted that the Download! client now gives a message saying that it will be "temporarily unavailable" today, while at the same time the Ovi Store site currently asks for a name and password to access it. Could something be stirring behind the scenes at Ovi Store?
Tibia ME updated: magic system made more complex and new island added
The world's first mobile MMORPG TibiaME (available on Symbian S60 1st, 2nd and 3rd Editions and Java J2ME) is still going strong, and has received a new update. The magic system has now been made more detailed with a new spell system, and the game world has had an entire new island added to it. The basic game world and client are free, but it costs extra for the gold client and for access to the premium areas of the game world.
Nokia 5800 bargain if you're in Finland
Readers in Finland may like to know that the unlocked SIM-free 5800 is now on sale on Verkkokauppa at just 269 euros including taxes, which brings it into line with the UK unlocked price. It also makes it one of the cheapest smartphones in the country right now, and places it firmly in the mid-range category. (The same deal is also available in blue.)
N-Gage application updated to 1.20(1459)
The N-Gage application has been updated to a new version. There don't seem to be any major changes visible, but apparently this fixes some score sync and predictive text problems, and possibly other bugs. If you want to update, open your N-Gage application, select "Options" and then "Check For Updates", then follow the instructions. Alternatively you can download directly from this link. Important Notes: The update download file may have the old app version number, but it IS the new version. Also, after installation the N-Gage icon may get moved from the front page to the Applications folder, you can move it back to the front page by using the instructions below.
Pandemonium now available on N-Gage platform
The classic 3D platformer Pandemonium is out now in the N-Gage showroom. To see it, go to the N-Gage application on your compatible phone, select the "Showroom" tab, select "Options" and then "Update Now". You should also be able to see it in the "All Games" section. You can find out more about the N-Gage platform including a list of compatible phones in the All About N-Gage FAQ.
