I have put together my first Symbian C++ application 😉 It's a camera application that allows more settings to the images taken than the built-in camera application does. It also allows for saving the images in "raw" Symbian/Epoc bitmap format. I did it to find out if it is possible to take even better images than the stock application permits. I would like you people out there to test it (if you dare, hehe!) so that we can find out if improvments to the image quality can be done, or if the factory settings are "perfect" 😉 So please don't flame on me if the app isn't "perfect" itself, hehe, I am still learning Symbian, and as I wrote its main purpose is to find out the "hardware limits" of the camera.
-----------------------------
Update: A new beta that now saves the settings. (Thanks to Domi, the FExplorer author, for his generous help with INI files! 😃 ) It also gives the "camera click" when the picture is taken and the camera may be moved, not after storing the picture to the memory.
New camera application
This is excellent. Very good quality pictures. The bitmap produces at 100% quality a 950kb file and the compressed is 350k which is in good quality too. Thumbs up. This application has potential. Will it be free or not? Open source maybe?
What device did you try it on,a 3650?
Yes 8)
Damn you! I want one too!
BTW: I tried it on my 7650,it works,i toke snapshot in really bad lighting, the quality was awesome.
Great job Baggis!
I got a great deal too. I got it free from www.themobilerepublic.com with a 27 (200 min free + 50 text ) contract. It is 125 now 😃
hope it would be a freeware... 😃
wow... nice apps. I hope it would be freeware also
keep up the good work
Great to hear you think it is a good application! 😃
GhostDog: Were you able to take better pictures with your 7650 using my app than would have been possible using the built-in?
Regarding its "license": I am a person who likes freeware myself, some of you might have noticed that it is me who has made the WAP-enabled version of phpBB, also that I have a SMS sending PC program available for free. Making this app a freeware is surely "tempting" looking at it from that point of view! On the other hand I, as every person, need money to make a living 😉 So my question to you here on this forum is (knowing that freeware is number 1, hehe): Would you consider paying for it? And if yes, how much feels "reasonable"? Of course the app has to be further developed before that, like the settings to be permanent 😉
Regarding "open source": I also like the open source idea, it's a "kind and generous" way of handling software development. But it also "demands" the source code to follow (almost) every design rule there are in order to not require a lot of time to support the people looking at it. As I wrote this is my first attempt to make a Symbian application, that means for sure I haven't followed the "syntax rules" like it is intended when developing Symbian C++ applications, in the sense of for ex. giving varibles their names, etc, etc. So I feel this is not "good enough" to "show up" for all experienced Symbian developers who are out there 😉

Yes,i took two photos in bad lighting, one with the bult in camera app and one with JS-Cam.The snapshot taken with JS-Cam was really better, well the file was quite bigger too 😃
I'll do some more testing and let you know.
beeatiful program
even though i would lite it for free i would probably pay 10 dollars any more and its not worth it 😃
i installed the app on the memory card and got a general werror everytime i took a photo, cant use it

There aren't very many open source Series 60 applications yet. So you might want to consider that option. I think there are many developers who have different skills in Symbian OS programming and who could contribute a project like this. I'm one at least...

Hmm... I wonder what caused that? Obviously it works on a number of phones, hehe, including mine. Have you tried to install it on the phone? You see I'm curious about what might cause this 😉 What is your firmware version?

I will definitely consider it as an option 😊
OpenSource is definately a good idea (imho) but depends on the way you look at it - money can encourage better devlopment but at the same time open source allows an entire community to help with it - look at the Linux versus Windows arguments this one can bring up!
Tried it on 3650 and 7650 - both settings at 100% quality led to "General System Error" but it takes it anyway - just doesn't seem to save... happened at 55% as well.
Personally I wouldn't actually pay for a camera app unless it had much better image quality and included things like digital zoom and dealt with night vision better... but at end of day its a phone not a camera and built in app does me. Anything better is fine but wouldn't actually pay for it 😊
If anyone is looking for a cheap 3650 - can get it on a 25/month contract for free from www.mobileshop.co.uk on Vodafone and lower it to 13/month after month 3.
great app worked fine.
little bug i think:
you can add your own details to the settings page

You mean you were completly unable to save images regardless of settings used?(Memory MMC/phone, Bitmap yes/no) Do you have either the directory "c:\nokia\images" or in case of MMC "e:\images" on your phone? I have made the assumption that these are the places where images should be stored, maybe I am wrong, hehe.

Haha! Cool feature! Wasn't aware of that myself 😉 Might sound strange to a non-developer, but being a developer I often find that people using what I have done find things like this much faster and better than I do 😉 Thanks!
Noticed the "Add Detail" section myself... one thing which I remembered is you cant save settings with a joystick push (trying to rememeber as I uninstalled it now)... and nope it didnt' save at all and dirs are there just gave the error.
So where do i download this app?

Really strange it didn't save if the dirs are there... Will have to think a bit on that! 😉
What do you mean with save settings with a joystick push? How would that be possible in a form like that?
So where do i download this app?
Take a look at the first post in this thread 😉
As I said uninstalled now but I believe one option was a Yes/No to bmp - that could be toggled with a joystick and you had to go Options->Edit for all the options rather than just a joystick push to make it work.

Hi Thanks for releasing this cam application. COOL!!!
I just finished installing in the MMC and it was installed properly. I tried taking a picture and the result is below 😉 The settings that I used is:
100% Quality, Monochrome, Bitmap, Saved in MMC, Night. The result is perfect!!!
I've also used settings 420 and the image are perfect too..
Very cool application - finally a user has more option to use the built-in cam
I hope it'll be a free software (please? LOL) My suggestion.. use Paypal to donate in improving your applications and/or for you to develope more cool one like this 😊)
Thank you Baggis
hi,
@my phone:
it needs 2-6 seconds to take the shot and 2-3 seconds to play the sound and save.
if i change the settings i can add some or change some names and i can delte some settings.
if i save the settings with softkey and save after the second shot i have the default settings. it resets.
i havent see the pictures on the pc yet but the pictures looks good on the phone.
cya amigappc
my firmware is 2.50. Any settings i took resulted in general error. dint try installin it on the phone thou
great app two thumbs up 😃

Aha, I see, but you didn't (not "don't" since you have uninstalled, hehe) have to go to Options->Edit for every single setting, just once to go from "view mode" to "edit mode" 😉

Yes, the "finer" setting used the longer time it takes to save as the file gets bigger, bitmaps are of course slowest. However, I have also noticed that pictures using the same settings as the built-in camera app takes slightly longer to save. That I don't understand as I use the way of saving images which the development documentation suggests. I will have to look into this if there is something to do that improves speed 😉
if i change the settings i can add some or change some names and i can delte some settings.
Hehe, another user made me aware of that too, I will fix that.

That I don't understand, I doesn't happen to me. Is there someone else experiencing this?
