Yesterday I was at local SEMC office (our official sponsor, that's how I get my hands on all SE phones) and I got a peek at the new firmware. They had a flashed P800, and I had mine...
The camera seemed much more improved, including the realtime preview. We compared the two side by side, pointing to the same spot; the new firmware had better preview, and also took better pics...
There is also an option to disable the sound in the camera menu (and a night mode)...
Pictures section had a "full screen" mode and better scaling (maybe even dithering, because the same pictures looked much better on the other phone)
Next week I'll be flashing mine when they get the required dongle for flashing...Will post a more detailed report then...
😮 WOW This is really great news. Would you be able to tell us when is this gonna be publicly released? And is this in beta stage right now? what's the firmware number/name?
You got me really excited. 😃
Very cool!!!
Anxuously awaiting the upgrade....
Well, as far as I know, it is not in beta stage any more. They were just waiting for dongles (they call it "hard keys"; you need them on your computer to be able to flash firmwares)
And the version they had was completely localised (it was fully in Turkish), so I assume it is complete
They also mentioned about a 16th of April date. But that may change in every country.
I really don't know anything about the version numbers at the moment, but will know for sure when I get mine flashed...
Also, someone there suggested that the new firmware increases overall performance, but I did not have the opportunity to check that. Although it is likely, we'll know for sure when I personally get the upgrade...
3 more days, I'll be waiting. 😃
This is really great news.
Please let us know what is the firmware version because i'm planing to buy a p800 and i will look one that has the latest firmware because there is now official SE service center here.
Good news, but I doubt it'll be comming to UK anytime soon...we seem to be the last to get everything 😞

is that from your own reliable sources in Singapore? 😃
No, the above guy said so. Just a nice thing to look forward to.

Not quite... they haven't even heard of the P800 in the Baltic or Russia yet!
Anyone know exactly why SE didn't build in downloadable updates?
This firmware is R2D (phone).
It will become available at the same time for everyone as the service points all use the same source server for their firmware files.
This week sounds likely for most centres to get the files.
SE has put support in for updates from home, but this is a lower priority than actually getting those with p800's already on a more stable and feature ready release. I would expect the firmware-update-from-home feature within 6 months or so.

I was in Russia the other week, and the Nokia 3650 is being advertised (and on sale) everywhere. Not a single P800! - When I was in a phone shop, the guy said it's the 1st one he'd seen they are now eagerly awaiting for it - much better than the 3650 they said!
So does anyone know if we can just walk into a SE centre and get it flashed just like that? Or can we buy a dongle?
The new Firmware will be able to play fullscreen MPEG-4 Videos! Nice feature I think! [/img]
Wow, you seem to know much about it, frei. Can you answer these questions?
Is the mp3 player now also usable in the flip closed mode?? And does it continue playback after you have received a call??
Great news 😊
Looks like i'll visit SE next week 8)
Cool -- can we give you a list of questions to ask and get firm answers on?
😮 😮 😮 Fantastic 😮 😮 😮
Please tell us (if you know) the firmware, so that when we visit our friendly SE svc centers, we would be able to tell them exactly what we want 😃 .
sorry, I can't say a lot about the new Firmware Version. But just wait a few days and u can have the update at your local SonyEricsson ServicePoint!
I know nothing about the mp3-player improvements, sorry.
But here two pics with Day Settings and the new Nightvision settings: a small improve
I think it's a rather big improvement. Very nice, can't wait!
Base on your sample pix, that's a big improvement. By the way, have you tested the nightvision settings on a normally lit subject, just wondering how it would be.
Ok, another good news. Just called SE and we will be able to play MPEG-4 Videos AND MP3 Audio files in flip closed mode. And we can use a MP3 as a ringtone....But nothing about the release date.... so we have to wait. But I assume it will be next week!
good work SE! Try it harder 😉
Well, the difference between two pictures means a lot to a photoshop man (like myself)
Frankly I am less concerned about how the picture initially looks than the actual data quality... The current firmware generates enourmous luma and chroma (brightness and color) noise if the light is not sufficient and it is real pain to fiddle with that kind of picture...
The new firmware sample looks much more smoother (healtier data) and that is fine with me 😉
FOR THOSE THAT ARE IN THE UK.
I've spoken to SE(UK) and they say it's still R1D is the latest yet I've spoken to one of their service centre in Wimbledon and they say they have the R2D firmware. I'm gonna treck over there as soon as I can to get mine updated.
Cem, can you give a little info about the Service Center that you saw the new firmware since I am a P800 owner living in Turkey, and would like to update it too.
Thanks,
Alper.
Can someone confirm the situation regarding restoring after the upgrade of the P800. I heard from a guy in the UK SE data team that you can restore after the phone is ugraded. However, in another forum someone lost the ability to use the audio player with the flip closed after he restored and it seems he may have overwritten a newer file from the upgrade.
if this is true then SE have screwed up big time. You should not have to restore apps (over 20 in my case) when you get the ROM flashed. This upgrade seesm to be writing files to volatile memory - very bad system design!

The firmware upgrade is available as of Apr 16 in Singapore
