It was a theory expounded by Fermat around 1630 and it wasn't until 23rd June 1993 (read that again, 1993) that Andrew Wiles offered his proof. It had taken, if I remember correctly, around seven or eight years of work by Wiles, on his own, to reach this point. Yet subsequent analysis found the proof to be flawed. Wiles went back to the drawing board and with the help of Richard Taylor, was able to submit an amended proof of the theorem on 6th October 1994. It was a phenomenal piece of mathematics by Wiles.
I can strongly recommend reading "Fermat's Last Theorem" by Simon Singh (Fourth Estate; ISBN: 1857026691). A fascinating book studying a fascinating proof of a fascinating theory.
