Come now, stop arguing - people are watching us!
7650i or is it 3650
Can I just say to RTS that... DON'T DROP THAT PHONE!!! Insurance company only pays out the market value for the phone, so in a years time, it will probably be about 300 on sim free.... and not what you insured it for.
Adrian
Oh dear The Register are watching us.
/me checks he hasn't posted owt stupid... nope he's fine.
I agree I feel cheated, If the 7650 had a Memory expansion slot then I wouldn't be too bothered as you can get video capture software. But anouncing a cheaper model after only a month or two after releasing the 7650 isn't right.
Although the 3650 is really ugly.
Typical Nokia. Release a phone. A little while later, release a bigger, uglier phone aimed at a lower-priced market, which is otherwise mostly better. Seemed to work with the 8310 and 3510...
Come on are Nokia realy that bad?
What they have done is announce a new phone to be released in about 6 months time, thats half a year! Virtually all phones will be out of date in that time. What surprises me is that Nokia announce things so early. I would have thouught its bound to effect 7650 sales from now on. However it gives people the choice I can but a 7650 now of wait for the 3650.
Most companies wait until the last moment before announcing new kit to keep up the sales of the current models. Where I would get realy peeved is buying a device today and finding its to be replaced within a month.
Remember when Siemens, Samsung and Panasonic start releasing series 60 phones as well as Nokia you can probably expect a new device every couple of months.
Why should anyone be pissed off at Nokia for releasing news about a new phone. It's just news! There is no phone available, you can't buy the 3650 and it'll be ages before it comes out. If you think about it the 3650 buyers will probably be pissed at Nokia when 3G arrives, so stop saying the 7650 is becoming obselete and accept the phone for what it has. I know it would be nice to have more memory and bluetooth audio functionality but I would also like more memory and a faster processor on my computer. I accept it and so should SOME of you lot.
today, on, Cebit @ Istanbul, i was able to view Nokia 3650.
It does look childish and simple, bleive me, 7650 looks much more beautiful.
Motion capturing and mmc is ok, however, the keypad, oh my god, what kind a keypad is it??? it's unusable..!!
and, why didn't nokia put an mmc slot into 7650..??? i really don't understand.
do you think, nokia can make an upgrade for 7650, some hardware modifications for mmc slot..?
Why not a MMC slot in the 7650...
maybe with an accessorry this is something possible....
Hp withe the Jornada 568 did it, they released a battery with MMc/sd slot, why not Nokia or some accessory company?
I wanted to answer to someone surprised by the Nokia policy....
why the 9210/9210i haven't got the gprs, if you find some intelligent reason, please tell me. 😊
You are gonna complain that a phone that will hit the market a year after yours is gonna be better and cheaper?
The point is that this time the cycle seems to be faster than ever before. Many people have just bought the 7650 for +700 euros and already hear that a cheaper model will soon have better features. This is not a good way to treat early adaptive customers.
For example Communicator models have kept their value and status for a lot longer time. The 7650 seems to have been released in a hurry and this is the result. I think there are very many 7650 owners now.
I also think that many people will be more suspicious after this that if they buy a new Nokia product, it will not last new for a long time. People will start to wait for "i" models and other changes "that are coming in a few months anyway". This is not good for sales!
The 7series is the flagship of new technology, expect in a year or 2 for it to be smashed into the ground, but remember that manufacturers and networks *want* you to upgrade every year.
You can buy a 700 series BMW and count on that it won't be a low budget model next year. It doesn't matter if some features inside or outside are the same, people see the wholeness.

Well, I don't think people care (apart for some techno geeks) about the better models. Just talked with my mom and she said that she would still buy the 7650 even though 3650 would be available (currently she has 8210)...
Why? Well, for her the design of 7650 was better than the toyish looks of 3650... It's not necessarily the "it has more features" that counts, it's the overall package with huge emphasis on the design. She would even pay more on the 7650 even though I said it hasn't have that many features.
Are there any law men in here, can i sue the register for putting the link to my post on their website? After all, what i've said is my property,no one asked me about copyrights 😃

This is a very good point. There are different kind of customers and users. Considering the current price and features of the 7650, I just believe that there are plenty of "tech freaks" that have bought it and are now disappointed.
This can, though, be just the first reaction. Then having thought about the next year and how long it will actually take until the 3650 is shipping in stores, it might not feel that bad anymore.

Well, these all seem like fair arguments, to a child.
I have had my 7650 for about a Month and am thoroughly impressed by it. A few software fixes here and there wouldn't go amiss but all-in-all it's a suprisingly amazing phone.
So, if Nokia bring out an even more all-singing-all-dancing (and makes a a fine cuppa) type of phone, do I really wanna moan? Nah - I had my 7110 for two years - because nothing out there before the 7650 was worth the effort.
Triband - how many of us can honestly afford to make calls from other countries?
MMC - A little more memory, are you really gonna use it? - I have yet to fill 4Mb - afterall - you can easily download snaps via IR to the computer.
Video Capture - The camera is only a VGA 640x480 - hardly 16:9 Widescreen Movie quality - doubt it would be worth it.
And with all these additions, is the 3650 really a phone anymore? - the 7650 is borderline between PDA/Phone and quick-shot camera.
I think i'll be happy with the standards set by the 7650.
Jim
Well u guys can argue all you like, im surrounded by people with 3310s and 3330s.....Im perfectly happy with my apparently outdated, error ridden 7650 thank you very much 8)
I was looking to buy the T68i back in mid July but Mobile Republic mess around with us and we called off the deal. I was then stuck with the 3210 and DB2000 while my better half was walking around with her 8250. Then my attention shift away from the T68i as a few phone was coming out on the market. Namely 7650, 7210, Z700, T300 with MCA-25 camera, and P800. They discontinued the Z700. T300 and 7210 will not be available until at least September (more than 1 month away). So I was left with a choice between T68i with MCA-20 cam or 7650. P800 looks too expensive. Couldn't find other places who sells T68i with MCA20 cheaply, while I found the 7650 for only 100.... the choice was obvious.
If you tell me the 3650 could also be availabe back then, I don't know if I would buy the 7650... I probably would still go for the 7650, cos you can never catch up with the lastest technology unless you are absolutely loaded and also a money waster. The other phones were still at least 1 month away and I have not had a nice phone for 2 years.....
I remember saying to my better half, before the 7650 arrive, that I can see myself using this for at least 2 years. I still can............ I think
I've played with it. (Friend works for Nokia 'borrowed' one last thursday - day b4 launch)
It's OK-ish, but feels 'cheap'. Don't think it'll stand up to the treatment that the 7650 can.
Very lightweight, about as heavy as a packet of cigarettes.
Plus, that keyboard...OK for kids, but not 'power-users'. PITA.
Yep, I'd buy one, (specially if I had kids) but I'd still prefer the 7650 for durability. 😮
Someone else has made the point before... the video is only 640*480 format so the quality is doubtful. you will probably need lots of RAM to use it. I remember trying to record a video to email to a friend of mine in HK. Trying to show her our new flat you see. Very small flat mine you. Tried it in 640*480 at 30fps, ended up with more than 500mb for about 1 minute of video. Won't bore you all with details but in the end tried 160*120 at 15fps, still took up more than 30mb. Can't send that via the net (unless I have ADSL), so imagine that on the 3650. Need to shell out loads on a memory card. Quality is poor. Blahblahblah. Unless of course it has hardware MPEG coder. Does it? :-?
Look at the camera as well. By that I mean the 7650 one. Max resolution is 640*480. Have you guys tried printing the pictures from the camera? I can tell you that it is not great. Colour is slightly out, it is blur, blahblahblah.
What I am saying is that those two functions are just novelty if you think about it. It is not supposed to be a digital camera replacement. (It did make me think about getting one though 😮ops: ) They will probably be making proper 2+ megapixel phones in the near future and all. The next big thing? Maybe a microwave on the phone 😮 ... just point the phone at the food you want to cook for 1-2 minutes and wah lah, hot food on the move! 😃 😃 😃
Adrian
It decodes movies in mp4 format. Probably has a hardware encoder or fast enough cpu.
Hi, the memory of 3650 willbe 4MB and external up to 64MB on a 3V card
Don't worry, do you really think I would drop my 7650.
I've had a look at the 3650 and I think it just looks cheap.
It may have more features but who want's a phone that looks like a childs toy!
I'll stick to my 7650 thankyou very much.
I got my 7650 a couple of weeks ago (and also have a 9210). Found myself swapping Sims around for a while, before I settled down to the fact that my 7650 is my everyday phone, and the 9210 is for business trips and travel (French-English translation is useful when you are there on holiday).
Anyway, I read the whole thread through (found it after the article in the Register) and found it a) sad, b) amusing (well done Adrian) and c) ... well some of you already get the point.
This is just a device with some features that we will use (or not, as is the case with most people) ... these features get superceded and upgraded all the time.
However, the point is that this is a Series 60 platform device .... as is the 3650 (and many more in the pipeline from Siemens, Matsuhita and Samsung for starters). Other devices will have different features (do you tell Sony that their new video cameras upset you coz you bought the last top of the range and the new one is lighter). Some of them will have more memory, aimed at different segments of the market, different applications, different vertical sectors perhaps.
It runs software - yes, the 7650 is a computer with limited memory, you can load up all you like as long as they designed for this platform (i.e. Midlets rather than kludgy standalone apps) ... but they will need a service element to be really useful. You should even be able to take those apps with you to your next device(s) - they will all share the same basic architecture.
What you are all perhaps missing is the value will be in what you can now do with these devices and the standard that is set for the market place. With licensees like Siemens, Samsung and Matsuhita ... you are already talking 65% brand market share (even more in the UK).
What does that tell you about the possibilities ... 😉
As one of the more vocal in this tread, I think I should try to explain myself... I know that 60+% of the market of new phones is great, maybe now we will see a jump in sw (not only midlets, but linux connectivity suites, etc.). And I know that this market will more and more look like the pc market two-three years ago. But it hurts one ego having bought the TOP flashy new model as it showed on the shops, and 1 month after that one is dethroned by the anounce of a new, cheaper, more complete, aimed at a lower market model. I hadn't fell for that ego boosting type of trip of buying the "latest greatest" in some years, so it hurts more, probably. 😉
And there is where I think nokia is failing, hurting the ego/self image of it's early adopters, by telling them "yeah, you just spend 700 on our top range phone, but the neighbour's kid will have a better one, cheaper, in six months".
Ok, just over-reacting...
My 7650 is insured for 500, so in a years time when there is something better out there, I will accidently break my 7650 and claim for a new phone of 500.
Not that I condone the insurance fraud or anything 😉 but which company did you get to insure it for 500??? I rang round several, most wouldn't insure it at all, and I had to settle on a maximum coverage of 350... figuring in the meantime I will just have to hold it in a death-grip every time I walk the streets of London!
I love mine and will stick with it whatever... it's annoying when new versions come out but hey, it happens alllll the time. I actually don't like the look of the 3650 at all - gimmicky shape, v. ugly. The thing that *does* irk me is that it's tri-band - I was gutted when the 7650 wasn't (Nokia very slow on tri-band no?!) - I make a lot of trips to the States a year and each time I have to borrow a Motorola timeport - horrible horrible, *awful* phones.
The 3650 isn't even in the same league as the 7650 - it's a toy from the looks of it.
The memory card would be good thoug - I'm currently developing MIDlets and it's hard to get everything crammed into a small amount of memory. I know the 7650 has 4MB but once you take into account users will have a few hundred k of photos & loads of other apps you're looking at a maximum size of 200k or so for a application/game. A nice big 64MB card would make life so much easier!
... you're looking at a maximum size of 200k or so for a application/game. A nice big 64MB card would make life so much easier!
You miss the opportunity then ... if you need 200K of application then you probably should think about distributing the functionality so that the smarts are in a server side application ... means more money for the operator (as the punter uses the app) but then you get more interest from the operators in rolling it out
The problem with that is having the money to run a server. The operator's marketing guys aren't interested unless you can prove it will make money - which means you have to launch it off your own pocket.
I'm mainly looking at making games and small applications to start with - then wait to see what the market turns out like before spending anything.
I'm not usually an 'early adopter', being a student I can't afford to be, but the 7650 really caught my eye, so I spent all my saved up pennies on it. I am now dissapointed that it came out before the addition of the new features, the guy in the phone shop advised me to wait for the new Sony Ericsson to become available, maybe I should have done.
My interest is whether it is possible for Nokia to provide a software or firmware upgrade for the 7650 that will allow it to have WAP2.0, Bluetooth audio support and video capture (though this maybe of limited use with the 2MB memory I have remaining).
Is this a possible or likely step for Nokia to take?
Cheers,
Seb
It's DAM UGLY!
I agree with everybody that thinks nokia is unfair because something like that happened to me 2. After 4 days since i bought the nokia 3510, nokia announced the 3510i model and i was sooooooooo pissed off that i wasted about 2 days thinking what i was going to do to get the new model. So i understand how frustrating the announcement of the nokia 3650 is. But have you heard a price for it? I mean how cheaper than the 7650 can it be? You should think that it should cost a lot more than the 3510i (if anybody has a price for it please post it) which should cost more than the 3510 which already costs 240euros. So until a price is announced don't be so frustrated. I also wonder why nokia isn't releasing a seperate camera for her phones.
Bluetooth audio profile can not be gained with a software upgrade,i've read in this forum that nokia is developing some bluetooth upgrade chip, video capture would be nice, look trough the posts, there was one mentioning a software that can mpeg4 encode n7650 video clips (i think it was in early development or something),and about the nokia 3510,you can get it here for 180-190 euros.
