I just had the WSOD problem on my N-Gage so I bought the right stuff to fix it. It cost a bit but it was worth it for me as I have a lot of Symbian Phones and a web site Im building up on them of hints and tips (see my profile).
You dont need to flash the phone to fix the problem. Its not illegal to do this anyway but you dont need to. All you need to do is format the user data area and reset the phone to the factory defaults.
I tried all the non-hardware solutions but Im afraid none of the software or secret key combinations work on the N-Gage.
You really need special tools or to take it to a service centre.
Now that Ive successfully done this now on my N-Gage I'm happy to offer a half price fix service to anyone who responds to this posting. (UK only and Just WSOD not other problems).

joselitoh wrote:For everybody here that troubling from WSOD, here is the easy solution.Reformat your phone.
Type this codes and feel how fresh your phone will become:
*#7780# - Reset to the original settings; some informations are also deleted and need to be re-entered.
*#7370# - Soft format - this will resets all the phone memory (like re-format a disk); make sure to have full battery charged !
also...
[Green]+[def3]+[*+] during a power on performs a hard format : this will return the phone like you have received; make sure to have full battery charged !
note: use the codes with care. I'm not responsible for any damage. I've done it myself, after the WSOD thing, and my phone is like new again.
If you succeed please post it here so others would know. Thank you.
Actually its the other way round, it is.....
Fullreset: *#7370#
Default unlock: 12345
Soft Reset: *#7780#
Default unlock: 12345
The 3 key method does not work for the N-Gage (classic or QD) as nokia removed that ability when they ported the firmware from the 3650. Don't even ask why they did that? As I have not been able to get a straight answer out of them.
99.9% WSOD is caused by maxing out the internal user memory. As rule of thumb never let this drop below 1.5MB.
Tools-Manager-[options]-Memory Details-Device Memory, when it has finished listing scroll down to see how much is free.
The only way to cure genuine WSOD, is via a Phoenix Module (Genuine Nokia), Or USBTurb Flasher Or Griffin Box. The first is only available to Nokia Engineers the latter cost approx 200 to 250 each.
Basically some Nokia Support Engineers do not read the manuals that they have been supplied by Nokia. As an example in the NEM-4 (N-Gage Classic) Manual it gives a reference to the internal user memory reset option in Phoenix. It's about a 30 second task. Generally if you have an older firmware they will upgrade that at the same time. Flashing and testing should not exceed 45 minutes from start to finish. If out of Warranty this will cost you about 20 to 30. Make sure you get price quote in advance.
If you hear of Genuine Nokia support Centres trying to charge more then let me know on www.n-gage-help.com ,as recently I have been hearing of certain ones who are trying to charge 65+ for this task.
If you get the usual "Device start-up failed Contact the retailer" every so often after you boot up then grab a copy of fixss, its in the DL section on www.n-gage-help.com, that error is caused by the audioserver which tries to get exclusive access to the memory card and fails. This workaround dismounts memory card at startup, and audioserver can get exclusive access without any problem. It has to be installed to user memory so remeber about the 1.5Mb rule.
btw if you have QD and you see "Device start-up failed Contact the retailer" even after about 100 tries at booting up then you can honestly say you have WSOD.
How to avoid WSOD.
1. Never let user memory drop below 1.5MB.
2. Keep an eye on the amount of Contacts,SMS, MMS etc as these are stored in User Mem.
3. Do not transfer large files via Bluetooth (as these go into user memory). There are some 3rd Party apps to send itmes straight to MMC, but they are only intended for fails safe and should not be trusted for the purpose of large files transfers.
4. Never leave Bluetooth enabled unless you really need it, as you can be Mesage Bombed with calling cards without any authorisation needed. Rapid flooding can max the user memory causing WSOD.
If you must send files via bluetooth from PC to your N-Gage , (Personally I recommend using a card reader or the USB cable for the classic) then get copy of Vdisk from http://www.vampent.com/vdisk.htm its only $8.90 US and allows you to send files directly to the MMC via BT from the PC.
Generally the only things that you should have in user memory are Fixss, McFiXER (McFiXER , also oin the NGH DL section, fixes file format /Partition problems on MMC's) and the Xvid codec if you use smart movie. Avoid the anti virus apps like the plague as they use way to much user mem.
Instead use a good quality Anti Virus app on your PC/MAC to scan the files before Uploading them to the phone.

To learn how to flash your phone please email me at [E-mail removed]. I would not like to post how to flash a phone as it is 100% illegal.
To reduce this problem!
1. Always check the files that you put onto your phone.
2. Check how big the size of the files are.

That has to be the biggest piece of BS ever.
If you frequent the official N-Gage boards, you might recognise me, and also know that this key combination does not work.
Flashing your n-gage, to do it yourself would cost you hundreds. Duh.
