Want to RS MMC for Nokia6630?
Hey,
There not yet available mate, only so far Nokia's own 32mb & 64mb.
Samsung have announced a full lineup of DV RS MMC's (128, 256, 512 etc.) but will not be available until next year, end of Jan. possibly not until March even.
Ian
DualVoltage RS-MMC cards are used here to prolong battery life. And if the cards we are used to work with a voltage of 3W then cards in Nokia 6630 with 1.8W. A card of 64 MB is included into a delivery package and changing the card for some more capacious will be hard in the nearset future. Third party manufacturers do not produce DV RS-MMC cards and Nokia offers only 64 Mb ones. That's not enough for today and some improvements may be expected only in the first quarter of the next year, third party cards will appear in March or a bit later. That's curious that we didn't manage to find even 64 Mb cards by Nokia in retail networks and evidently due to the absence of the phone they are not demanded much. Fortunately, we had a prototype of another manufacturer's phone at our disposal that was supplied with a 256 MB DV RS-MMC card. The phone can see the card and works well with it. We'll note the card used had some limitations and was not a commercial product. That's why the only conclusion may be done that the phone is capable of working with such cards and no any problems will appear in future, the main thing is that more capacious cards should appear.
Greetingz, Pipie 😉
There aren't any DV RS-MMC cards in the retail channel as of yet.
Apparently the Pretec ones (www.pretec.com) conform to the MMC 4 standard and work at 1.8v as confirmed by their tech support department, but good luck finding them for sale.
Can be ordered off their website however, $60 for a 256MB card. I aint taking the chance though.
Hmm thier only uk supplier is about 2 miles from me 😊
Might be worth a look.
Nice one 😊
Might be worth paying them a visit phone in hand and asking to try a card out just to make 100% sure.
Then buying a load and making a mint on Ebay 😉
Make sure you let us know if they do work.
I emailed them today
------------------------------------
All I know is that the Pretec RS-MMC will work on the Nokia 6630 as Pretec have tested it.
http://www.pretec.com/product/SSD/MobilePhoneSSD/NOKIA_Memory.htm
We do not have any RS-MMC in stock so it would not be possible for you to pop up and try one.
Thanks
Brendan

So it seems they have read the compatability chart and made the same assumtions everyone else is making.
They have put that the 6600 does not except Full Size MMCs and the 6630 does and excepts RSMMC with adaptor :/ Seems to me like thay have the two mixed up.
If you read http://www.pretec.com/PR/PR_MMC4_0_060104.pdf you will see MMC Plus or MMC 4.0 spec includes Dual Votage support at 1.8/3.0v so its possible that these cards may work even though the retail pages says 2.7-3v.
The problem is its paying $80 on the off chance that the card MAY work as the retail site does not say if these are MMC4.0 spec or not.
Nah, I don't mean the distributor, several people have emailed Pretec direct, and their tech support personnel have repeatedly given the answer that their RS-MMC cards are definitely MMC 4 compatible and work at 1.8v.
I might bite the bullet and order a 256MB card...
Hi.
Have ordered one from here - http://www.pccardsdirect.co.uk/acatalog/Pretec_RS_MMC__Reduced_Size_MultiMediaCard_.html - I'll let you know how I get on.
Rgds
Will
Nice one, I'll wait for you to try yours.
Glad you found that shop as well.
I purchased one last night too after speaking to a guy from the states from pretec and he said the MMC4 ones are dual voltage
Hey,
Has anyone got one yet to prove to us all they work?
All this talk is driving me mad, I want hard proof!
Ian
Well seeing the only ordered yesterday and its a Saturday its unlikly your going to find out for a few days 😊
Oh well, thought it too good to be true.
I will not be receiving the card - here is the e-mail I just received.
I'm very sorry but the RS-MMC from Pretec does not support the dual voltage function (1.8/3.3V) that the Nokia 6630 requires. I'm very sorry but the forum is giving incorrect information out which I believe they may be getting from the Pretec website as it is very misleading.
The new dual voltage RS-MMC will not be available until early march time.
Best Regards
Brendan
😞
Will
I just got the same reply, what a shame!!!
Annoying seeing as Pretec told me over the phone that the MMC's do support dual voltage
Wish I hadnt ordered one now!!!
Hey,
Who do you trust if you can't the manufacturers!
Bad call on their part really not to have actually tried the cards in a 6630 before saying either way.
Still means we gotta bl--dy wait for bigger cards again!!!! 😡
If Nokia phones weren't so dam good I'd go elsewhere!
Ian
Yeah, screw Nokia and their stupid phones, I'm going back to using 2 cans and a piece of string! 😞
😊
Thou to wait till March is a killer, but there you go, that's life, shit happens and then you die.
😊
I have found 128Mb info from samsung, seeminly available now!!
But if look at the MMC Product Line-up:
http://www.samsung.com/Products/Semiconductor/Flash/FlashCard/MMC/index.htm
you can see that dual voltage cards over 256 MB aren't even in the roadmap...
I hope this document is not up-to-date and we will be able to see larger (at least up to 512 MB) RS-DV-MMCs....
:frown:

Well they don't list 1Gb 3.0v RS MMC cards in the road map either and other vendors are already selling them. I still have trouble comprehending how Nokia could make the decision to use a 1.8v only reader when nobody was making cards... must be good drugs in Finland.
Will be interesting to see if anyone sells the 128Mb Samsung card - this is almost big enough to be useful!

Incorrect, they do have info of cards up to 256 which are the high speed variety

I cant find anyone selling the 128Mb(non high speed DV) MMC
ARGH!!! BOLLOCKS!!! 😡
And there I was getting ready to order one as well.
What a shambles. I still don't understand how the MANUFACTURER can publish specs on its website and confirm over email and phone, and yet the cards are still different.
Maybe that particular distributor has got an older batch of cards, and the latest ones coming out of the Pretec factory are dual-voltage?

so, which was the incorrect part?
UA
So, has anyone actually got theirs yet?
A new revelation from samsung:
Dear Mr. Day,
thanks for your interest in Samsung products. We currently offer dual voltage RS-MMCs in the range from 32MB up to 128MB. In Q2'05 the 128MB will be changed into a new format which we call MMC mobile. MMC mobile will be offered in densities of 128MB and 256MB (also scheduled for Q2'05). MMC mobile has the same characteristics as the RS MMC (same size, dual voltage) but offers higher speed in addition (52Mhz).
Hope this anwers your questions for time being.

I have replied asking for a distributer of these
Only 256Mb and not until Q2! My 6630 will surely have been usurped by a better device by then? I think I might have to buy a dedicated MP3 player and just abandon the 6630 as a media device at this rate.

Actually, reading about the iPod shuffle, I think I might as well just get at 1Gb one of them instead. Let's face it - Nokia don't want me to use the 6630 for playing music (or any kind of media for that matter)... you are limited to 64Mb, and even when (if?) 512Mb or 1Gb cards appear, they will be prohibitively expensive. The phone does not accept headphones other than the crummy pair supplied with it, there is not even provision of an official adapter so it will take a standard 3.5mm jack, instead you have to either pick up a soldering iron or spend the evening scanning eBay (even then there are precious few that actually deliver stereo sound). So that's it, the perfect answer; give up trying to use the phone to play music and buy a 1Gb iPod shuffle, it even works as a USB storage device - thinking about it that must have been what Nokia had in mind all along!
I dont just want mine for music, I want to store clips, data etc
new email,
we are currently only selling to OEM customers and not into distribution channcel. Situation will change within this quarter and then you should be able to source parts from UK suppliers as well.
Hi!...
My suggestion right now... Learn to save and use mem...
example..
i have installed on RSMMC 64 meg right now:
- 4 games, (average 500 kb each)
- 7 extra apps, (average 400kb each)
- 6 Mp3 ringtones about 300 to 400 kb each (128kbits 16bits 44.1 khz mono)
- 4 videos in very hi quality AVI XVid format (208x 176 15fps, 320kbits video 44.1khz sound, created with SmartMovie) about 4 to 5 minutes of duration, arround 4 meg each... really amazing quality playing that!.
- 32 pictures in 176 x208 jpg (why to carry 1280 x 960 pictures if you just see 176 x 208 on your phone at full size?) so... transfer to pc.. keep that hi-res there and make shinked versions for the phone.
- 3 favorities Themes (arround 400 kb each)
ok and right now just one Mp3 Song (128kbits 16bits 44.1khz Stereo) 6.2 meg.
And now i still having 20 meg FREE!! ... so i can take around 37 pics a Higher quality with that mem yet....
Or ... put about 4 to 5 additional Mp3 songs with same hi quality and/or duration ...
All this in Just 64 meg...
SO... dont say that Nokia 6630 cant be a "MEDIA" device right... come on!...
try to carry, watch and listen all this on a iPod :icon13: 😃 oh! sorry iPod just play music
I have my favorities pics, my favorities songs, my favorities ringtones, favorities themes , all favorities... thats the key... and make all that to watch and listen on the phone display and quality.. not use same PC quality files... you dont need that and you expend too much mem...
Oh BTW!... i have 141 contacts on phone mem ... so.. i have additional 8 meg there FREE in case i want more mp3s or ringtones, apps, themes.. etc...
well.. 😃
i hope this help you to stay COOL.. wating the new future RSMMC
cya!
😎
