ETI Camcorder reborn

You come on here with the best news we've heard in 2 years, tempting us with your wares, then tell us we have to wait another month to see it, what a tease!
How dare you tempt and tease us like this!!😃 😃 😃 😃
Willy, your calendar is a bit off... 😉 But I can understand how it feels...
Each day feels like a month whilst waiting..... 😃 😃
Have you seen the sample video clips from the N90 and N70 over on mobile-review, how do yours compaire?

I could not find the clips you mentioned. Can you post a link?
I tested Philips' camcorder on my 6600 and 7610, and compared to a similar video (A busy street with lots of cars moving by at low speed, with no panning of camera)recorded via Camcorder2. IMHO the difference is quite noticeable.
First, the Philips video exhibits the same jerkiness as the built-in app (try high-quality, QCIF, 7 FPS). It is very disturbing to see the video pause every few seconds. I could not understand why people are not complaining about this as it appears worse than it was in the 3650 days.
The 128x96 version (at the theoretical 15FPS) is a lot better though, with no visible pauses. The Camcorder2 video, on the other hand, is consistent all the way from start to finish, in all video settings. In terms of smoothness, Philips 128x96 version is about equal to ETI's 160x120 version recorded as high-quality AVI file, which is about 7.5 FPS. Do not believe in the advertised 15FPS -- it is not even close.
In non-compatibility mode (an enhanced version of ETI's original EYE file, with audio and video muxed in one piece), ETI can record high-quality, 160x120, at close to the maximum capture rate -- 14.2 FPS. It may even be faster than that but we will never know because the camera max out at 15.
Picture clarity. It appears to me that both the Philips and ETI's videos (in compatibility AVI mode) are on par with each other when it comes to picture quality. The ETI looks better on phone (without the excessive dithering effect demonstrated by Philips), while the Philips look slightly clearer on PC when stretched to double size. But then again, Camcorder2 offers a wide range of profile settings and I was only testing the default one. I have seen smooth video that shows no visible signs of artifacts (quite huge though), so I'm not making a conclusion here.
Hope this gives you better ideas... One special note on QCIF. The cameras on these phones actually do not capture at QCIF mode, but always 160x120. The QCIF pic on Philips is result of slight internal stretching. Camcorder2's video can be very easily stretched to 176x144 without introducing any blur.

IMHO, FPS in that videos are EXTREMALLY low! I hope, ETI Camcorder2 will be able to capture video in good resolution (QVGA+) with sightly higher framerate!
Which maximum resolution will support ETI Camcorder2 and when users will be able to download a beta version?
And another question: Can Camcorder2 capture audio at HIGHER than 8kHz freq? (16kHz for example, as in Nokia N-series)
Thanks for that dfdzgz
Thanks for finding the links DJKOS
We do have to bear in mind the N70/90 has a processor at least as twice as fast as the 6600, so I guess you should be testing camcorder2 on a 6630 or 6680 for compairable results.
I agree, the fps on these clips is very poor but the quality and resolution is nice, if camcorder2 can make video like this on my 6680 that would be like a dream come true!
Will
If mr. dfdzgz allows, I will test ETI Camcorder2 on my 6630 and compare results with N-series and standart 6630`s camcorder.
I got a new idea! That will be great if you will NOT encode audiotrack in AMR, because AMR's quality is very bad. You'll better save audiotrack in WAVE uncompressed or encode it in MP3 in postprocessing phase. Advanced filtering of audiotrack are also welcome! 😊 For example, manual volume/amplification/normalization control will be VERY useful, I think.

Actually, our audio is encoded in ADPCM and saved as audio track in standard AVI file. The resulting AVI file can be played directly without special 3GP/MP4 software.
The filtering stuff WILL be available as plug-ins to the video album. Along those we will also offer plugins to re-compress video, convert to MP4/3GP, extract audio, and many more... all of which will be put on our dedicated web site for free download as they become available.
Ok, great! Do you got any possible release date of ETI CamCorder2? Just interesting...
Nokia 6620 here, willing to beta if needed.
A comprehensive beta tester here 😊
Mail me []HERE if need be, 6680 with v2.04.15 fw
eagerly waiting for testing this great application,
(Oh and one more thing, the N90 and n70 both have the same processor as the N6680 also the N6680 is an overall faster fone as compared to both of those specifically the n90 because n90 becomes significantly more slower due to its bigger and more vibrant screen )
Thanking You.
30th of June.....so near...yet, so far......
Can you pls confirm the release date is still going to be 1st July 😊
Today's 2nd July... and still nothing... 😞
DJKOS wrote:Today's 2nd July... and still nothing... 😞
Don't worry... got a bit delayed. It's weekend here and everyone is working, trying to release the beta on July 4th. Initially we will release a version for Symbian 7.0 phones, followed shortly by a version that supports 8.0 phones (6630, etc.) The 7.0 version should also work on the newer phones, but does not take advantage of the new features such as multi-level zoom and 320x240 encoding. Our encoder can actually encode 320x240 pictures on the older 6600 at a pretty reasonable 5FPS, but the phone's camera simply does not allow us to capture 320x240 pictures reasonablly fast (had to capture 640x480 and scale it down and feed to encoder... slows to a crawl).
Cheers,
Gary

I'm happy to announce it's out! I already sent download instructions to those who applied for beta test. Now, be generous with praise if you are having fun, and be gentle with criticism if you simply can't stand buggy beta ware 😉
Me want beta too.

SENT! Pls. check your inbox.
Great begining, but there is a lot of bugs! 😞
I have tried to classify it and write a bug report. I hope, it will help you!
Waiting for version for 6630!!
P.S. Sorry for my not_so_good English! 😉
P.P.S. I have found another set of bugs - they were added to my bug report.

Thanks DJKOS for a comprehensive test! Please do note that the file is intended for the 6600 type of phones -- the 6630 (8.0 based) version is being worked at but won't be available for the moment. Many of the video related bugs are related to this due to inconsistent audio API. In fact, I'm surprised to see the application even runs on 6630 😊 On 6600 or 7610 you should not have any of the video recording problems you mentioned (the UI bugs do exist). The "small video" problem is due to the profile selected. There are three profiles:
1. Phone mode - 80x60 but stretched to 160x120 on display with extensive post filtering to allow a smooth picture. This mode results in very small files suitable for viewing on phone, and frame rate can be as high as 15 on even 6600.
2. PC mode - 160x120. I'm not sure what exact profile settings are used but on average it can produce around 9.5FPS with clear picture (no visible blocking artifacts)
3. Editing mode - 160x120. On 6630 this will be 320x240, but on 6600 we cannot do it, so only 160x120 at higher quality.
Anyway, thanks again for the test result! I will fix them ASAP!
Cheers,
Gary
Please check the last additions! It was posted A MINUTE after you have posted your last message! 😊
P.S. I have tried ALL profiles - still 80x64 result! 😞
hi. i would like to participate too~ 😉
Hello,
I have 6630. I very like feature of record in 320x240!!!!!
When product come out, I will buy as soon as see it!
Can I get beta version for test it when you are finish it?
Thank you!

Wow, quite an extensive list by DJKOS. I'm assuming the version provided doesn't work with 6630 so that is an invalid bug list?
I have not had any of those problems other than the "Credits" not highlighting, but when it is suppose to be highlighted and it is selected nothing but a white screen appears. No problem, just push back down on the joystick and I'm back to the main screen again. Guess you're just not giving credit to anyone. Take some credit this app is great has even more potential.😉
I'm also assuming that the info icons not appearing during recording is not a bug, you just haven't gotten to that point yet. :frown:
"Beta" means "unfinished product" and "what's there works". That's it. Every function seems to work fine. Anything beyond that is just a user wish list, most of which I'm sure you will incorporate going forward(i.e night filter, on-screen timer, blah, blah blah..). I am doing some more extensive testing with "SmartMovie" and some other apps that interface with avi files although there are no conflicts at this point. Currently I have SmartMovie and DVDPlayer working fine with ETI. I'm am going to experiment with different "orders of install" to see if there is a negative effect.
One thing was during installation it said "Replace 1.0 with 1.0?". Would have liked to see "Replace 1.0 with 2.0?"
I've tried to blow this app up but it seems to be rock solid on my 6600 fw 4.09.1.
The avi output rules, very nice. Seems to have better quality than previous ETI.😊
This is a great start and at this point can viably replace my ETI 1.0. 😃
I will test on 6620 and post results, although previous verson of ETI did not work on 6620.
Is adding a "Night Filter" possible? Because it works alright with the Nokia "Camera" app and would be a nice option for ETI.
DJKOS wrote:Please check the last additions! It was posted A MINUTE after you have posted your last message! 😊P.S. I have tried ALL profiles - still 80x64 result! 😞
Same here, all profiles produce 80x64 video on my test 6600 v 3.49.2 20-01-04 nhl-10
.
Other than that IT ROCKS!
On the player - any chance of a 'full screen, sideways' option 😊
Can't wait for the 6680 version!!
Good work buddy!
EinZtein wrote:Wow, quite an extensive list by DJKOS. I'm assuming the version provided doesn't work with 6630 so that is an invalid bug list?
Thanks EinZtein! Indeed the version I put online was SOLELY intended for 6600 and 7610 (are there any others using 7.0 Symbian)? But I do appreciate DJKOS' input on how this baby works with (against?) the 6630. At this point I'm running into some strange audio issues with 6630 (the cause of almost all the bugs listed by DJKOS)... but I should be able to fix that shortly.
The "Credits" item is left out intentionally... until we have a rock solid product nobody is getting any credits! 😉 The missing viewfinder icons will definitely return on the final release!
A few words on video quality. In my view this version produces much higher quality videos then previous one. First of, the CODEC has been optimized by my friend David Li, a renowned imaging expert, to be almost 100% faster than the one I created for the old ETI Camcorder. Secondly, due to the faster CODEC, I was able to capture at much higher bit rate -- more "information" in the picture, to say that in plain English. The result can be seen by modifying the video in VirtualDub. Just import the file, add a Resize filter and specify Bicubic Interpolation, blow the video to 320x240! You might also want to add a sharpen filter. Anyhow, show the resulting video to anyone and they may not know it was captured at 160x120. I was questioned by a few people why Camcorder2 does 160x120 instead of 176x144 like the others. The truth is, there is NO 176x144 mode at all in 6600. Those 176x144 pictures are always resized from 160x120, period. So instead of faking it I decided to keep it in original shape and cram in as much bits as possible so you can later resize it to a larger picture.
Adding a night mode should be possible, and should be fun. Will try that tomorrow while others are busy fixing bugs 😉
Thanks again and cheers!

Hi Willy. Sorry to hear your 6600 only does 80x64... Can you make sure the profile is indeed selected as "PC" mode? You should see a small icon with the word "PC" next to a pile of disc on the viewfinder.
Update: I just heard from another tester this seems to be caused by the MMC card being used. He used a 512MB card and it always resulted in 80x64. After changing to a 32MB card the problem is gone. Can anyone confirm this?
Cheers
I got an bug report update here! There is some new bugs and reflections.
Looks like, profiles-doesn't-works bug isn't connected with memory card that inserted into smartphone (I got identical results on 64 and 256MB DV-RS-MMC on my 6630), BUT it's connected with installation location. If install it into phone's memory, profiles WILL work!! And quality on "editing" profile is REALLY amazing! (but resolution is still not 320x240)
Updated again! I got a new bug! Check new .txt file!

Hi ya.
I too had it installed to MMC - after installing to Phone memory, profiles is now working and JESUS CHRIST!!! the quality is AMAZING!! 😊
PS. On my 6680 it will only record from the front camera - not the back one and the sound and picture stutters as reported by others.
