Hi all,
Having got bored and frustrated waiting for TomTom to release an N80 version of their Mobile 5 product, I bought (direct from www.66.com) the latest British version of Route 66 Version 7, which they state is fully compatible with the N80.
Guess what.... random GPS dropouts, map freezing and program terminating repeatedly when planning certain specific routes (postcode to postcode).
Has anyone else any experience of Route66 on the N80 and are there any hints and tips to make it run reliably?
P.S. I have the latest (?) FW V3.0618.0.2 23-05-2006 RM92 Nokia N80 (55.01)

We have to inform you that Mobile 7 S60 North America is not compatible with Nokia N80.

I don't have Route 66, but I did get Wayfinder.
I'm suffering all sorts of GPS dropouts too, but I don't think it's Wayfinder at fault, it's the horribly poor bluetooth on the N80.

Thanks for the info.
The R66 website specifically says the N80 is compatible with the latest version, and my Invoice even states N80 as part of the order.
I will wait for R66 Customer Support reply, and if they have no suggestions, will ask for my money back - either as a refund or by contacting my credit card.
Shame, as there's currently no other N80 compatible GPS applications...

Dear Customer,
More and more indecations are that the problems, concerning bluetooth and memory of the N80 are caused by the firmware of the N80. We advise to wait untill Nokla releases a firmware update for the N80.

Dear Customer,
This has nothing to do with Mobile 7. Our product Mobile 7 is compatible with Symbian series 60 interface 3.0 !!! like the N80. The N80 however has problems with buetooth and memory due to the firmware of the phone. Even compatitor navigation software will have the simular problems when they will release a version. unless nokia updates the firmware of the N80.

The first email was in response to my fault report.
The 2nd email was in response to me asking for my money back because Route66 doesn't work properly on the Nokia N80.
For information:-
I specifically ordered an N80 version of Route66 from the r66 website. My invoice/delivery note states 'N80' so that's what I ordered, not a generic S60-3rd version!
Tomorrow I will contact my credit card company and dispute the transaction to try and get my money back.
I STRONGLY advise N80 owners in this forum to avoid buying Route66 from www.r66.com at the present time!
Cheers,
Dez
woow thanks for the advice, i was going to order it, instead the gps unit, but, i want to try just buying a gps unit since N80 has its own GPS app
I notice they have taken N80 off the list of supported devices now
I am using the 5 day trial of Wayfinder currently on my N80 with a bluetooth GPS adapter and a Parrot car kit.
The bluetooth connection dropped out 3 times this morning to the GPS however the connection to the car kit stayed alive.
This behaviour was seen in the early versions of the N70 firmware as well.

No problem - glad my info saved you some money and stress!
Finally yesterday I received an email from Route66 Support Team with a Returns address so I am getting a full refund (hopefully including postage)
Cheers,

I couldnt wait any longer for a new version of TomTom so thought I would buy a Route66 Mobile 7. I thought it would be useful for my holiday journey from Manchester to Great Yarmouth. The postcode holiday for the caravan site is NR30 4HG and when it attempted to calculate the route it kept crashing. Ive re-tried several times but no luck, so I then tried Great Yarmouth as a town and that worked (but this is not the point as I need a pin point location). I also experienced losing a GPS signal more than several times during my journey. When it did loose the signal it sometimes freezes on the directions screen without any notice. My home postcode of M26 1AG also crashes Route66. I was in Great Yarmouth and attempted to find the tourist information office using the Route66 and that was hopeless. It would find the address/location but when it attempted to calculate the direction it would crash.
The GPS receiver was a TomTom and when Route 66 did say it lost a signal, the TomTom GPS reciver would still be flashing to state a signal is still active.
I am definitely getting in touch with Route66 support for a full refund unless they provide a patch/fix.

Hi,
The latest version of Route66 is supplied with a Britain map of over 200 Mb. I also experienced the application crash when entering an ML1 postcode. When I replaced the map file with an older version (143Mb) route calculations stabilised.
Unfortunately, the GPS Bluetooth connection still dropped out every 5-10 minutes, making the product essentially useless.
Basically, TomTom and others have not released an N80 version of their products yet so why did www.R66.com do so WITHOUT proper testing?
If you paid via Credit Card, contact their Retail Disputes department if R66 doesn't offer you a full refund...
Cheers,
Dez
Agree with you totally Dez.
Thanks for the advice. 😉
This is my response from Route66 in which I said that the software is unstable as it kept crashing when calculating my home address details, my holiday destination and disconnected more than several time during journeys. They should have a product recall as the software has too many issues. I'd also requested for a refund but no mentions of that, I'll have one last attempt, if that fails I'll get in touch with credit card company.
Dear Customer,
We supported the N80 recently, however The N80 has problems with Bluetooth due to the firmware of the phone. We have confirmation from Nokia that this problem is caused by BT power consumption reduction change which was introduced in the latest firmware. Nokia is working on a fix that will be published shortly
Of course we are doing our outmost to fix eventual "bugs" yourself, however we kindly request you to fill out attached error report form and return the form to us.
We thank you for you cooperation.

Can anyone who's having this issue confirm the firmware version that this refers to please? I'm running v3.0614.03 11/04/2006 RM92 and am awaiting delivery of a Holux GPSlim 236 unit - am I likely to have the same issue?
SW Version V3.0617.0.6 03-05-2006 RM-92 is concerned. I don't know if the previous version is concerned also.

K thanks for the quick reply. I'll post here once I get and test the unit (it's in the air from Hong Kong at the moment for half the UK price 😊 )
gb229 wrote:SW Version V3.0617.0.6 03-05-2006 RM-92 is concerned.
My problem exists on the current version which is same as above..
I personally dont think its entirely a bluetooth/firmware issue. I think there a problem in general with Route66 software. 😡
VJ_UK wrote:I think there a problem in general with Route66 software. 😡
There are some fairly uncomplementary posts about the software on the relevant pocketgpsworld forum.
Think I'll explore other avenues for the moment and wait for the S60v3 navigation software to mature a little. Only really bought the Holux to play with as I already have an old (and slightly 'modified'😉 TomTom Go for the car.

I've attached the latest comment on my battle with Route66.
I've had to use the product key so dont think I will be eligible for a refund via Route 66.
Dez - Did you get a similar response?
Dear Customer,
Only ROUTE 66 products of which the productkey NOT have been used, will be refunded. If that is the case:

got the britain and ireland route 66 and as a tracking application it is great, tracks well and I like the speed warning should I exceed the trigger I set.
But when I try to calculate or if I do manage to calc a route and route66 has to recalc the application will shut down.
Very frustrating.
I will try installing the previous version of the Britain file and see what that does.
I do not get bluetooth dropout atall. I have a noname cheap and nasty gps bluetooth receiver from ebay (28 delivered)
Other than not being able to plan a route I am actually impressed with this (I had tomtom5 previously and thought that was poor)
VJ_UK wrote:I've attached the latest comment on my battle with Route66.I've had to use the product key so dont think I will be eligible for a refund via Route 66.

Dear Customer,
Only ROUTE 66 products of which the productkey NOT have been used, will be refunded. If that is the case:
Hi m8,
Mr Ron, VEET, has a lot to learn about customer care... and European Union distance selling / Consumer Protection laws!
If your invoice/despatch note is like mine, it clearly states you bought the product for use on a N80, and as it doesn't work on the N80, R66.com are clearly selling goods 'not fit for purpose' and you are entitled to a full refund.
Clearly Route 66 is NOT capable of running on the N80. (I can forward anyone that need a copy of an email I received where R66 admit the fact it doesn't work on the N80.)
Obviously the only way you can find out the product doesn't work on the N80 is to install it, so use of the key is irrelevant - the software is faulty / useless!
If you paid with a credit card then phone the CC company's Retail Disputes department and ... er... Raise a Dispute. Your credit card company will authorise you to send the product back ('Royal Mail International Signed For' cost me about £6.50). Once R66.com ACCEPT OR REJECT delivery (it doesn't matter which), contact your Credit Card company again and they will FORCE R66 to refund your cash.
Mr Ron needs to be re-trained (or 'redeployed' out of customer support).
P.S. Demand a refund of the Return postage fee, as Route 66 are at fault and you are entitled to claim all reasonable expenses back.
Cheers,
Dez :icon1:
well, strangly it does indeed work fine with the old version of the Britain file. So its nothing to do with the n80. No bluetooth dropout atoll.
Route66 ain't doin to good....
Cheers for the advice again Dez. :icon14:
Id sent a reply to Mr Ron VEET explaining that I had to use the product key to check that the software worked on the phone. I also explained that the Route66 is absolutely hopeless as it cant even calculate my home address properly without crashing. I explained that they have withdrawn its compatibility on there website which proves that this doesnt work on the N80. And guess what, theyve not replied now! 😡
I phoned up my credit card company (Barclaycard) yesterday and advised them of my situation and they said as Ive installed the product using the product key, the software is classed as used goods. Therefore they are unable to help. :frown:
Think I maybe a little screwed with a Route66 that doesnt work. :con?
Scotchgitt How do I get hold of the old version of the Britain file?
VJ_UK pm me you remail address and I will see what I can do!!
I have currently got both britain files on the phone (renamed the old one britain2) so I can switch between them to try to get it going.
Mr Rob VEEN sent me a reply yesterday saying I had to free up phone memory, I currently have 7mb free so will try to free up more and see what happens.
VJ_UK: how much free phone memory do you have?
Right now Im fuming now cos someone is telling me porkpies and I think its Route66. 😡
I emailed Nokia to find out how I can find the latest N80 firmware and my experience with Route66 and the possible bluetooth problem with the phone. This was there response

Scotchgitt I have 32MB Free memory on the phone and 1661MB Free memory on the memory card.
Mr Veen said you need 6mb free memory for the aplication to run, I currently have 12mb free and it still crashes but the old map works ok still.
This is getting more and more interesting, my mate Mr Veet from Route66 has responded to my email regarding Nokia comments.
We regret you decision, however the BT problem of the Nokia is true...This comes from the Nokia site itself

Well my Holux GPSlim 236 unit arrived yesterday and I've been playing with the trial version of Wayfinder Navigator and Nav4All over the weekend.
Over 4 separate tests each of 30 minutes or more I've had no GPS dropouts running firmware v3.0614.03 11/04/2006 RM92.

Scotchgitt – How do I get hold of the old version of the Britain file?
Hi,
Route 66 Support are no longer replying to my emails, but since we are all quoting Mr Ron Veet in these forums, I guess it's hardly surprising.
I suggest you contact Barclaycard again and advise them that THE SOFTWARE IS FAULTY AND DOES NOT WORK - tell them that unless they contact the supplier to get your money back you are going to take the matter up with the FSA (Financial Services Authority) and raise an official complaint with the Financial Ombudsman. You have clearly been supplied with faulty goods, and they MUST deal with your complaint. Don't take NO for an answer, keep asking for a supervisor or manager and if they still refuse, then ask them to record your complaint on your file and to supply contact details for the FSA and the Ombudsman.
As for the question of earlier versions of the GB map, have a look in Bit Torrent or EMule. But ONLY do this if you have a legal copy of Route 66.

Hi,
I bought a Bluetooth GPS receiver from mobilefun.co.uk for 40 and have been playing with it on my N80 using SmartCom GPS. I haven't done any large amount of driving, but had it going on a 7 minute trip with no drop outs.
Smartcom isn't the best progra,m though and the map I ahve got isn't calibrated properly or detailed enough, so I was thinking of trying Nav4all. Being on Orange Pay as you go though, map downloading could get expensive, so how does it work exactly. ARe the maps stored onyour phone for future use once downloaded?
Nav4all developers appear to be spamming forums as well. A search for Va4all forum brings loads of results from people with similar names using similar terminology (i-net for example). I don't know i fi can trust a company like that.
