The N95 classic hits v20 firmware!!

232 replies · 92,984 views · Started 26 November 2007

Hmm, when reinstalling all my apps, I also put back on that SPMark program that was recently released. The benchmark for the N95-1, v12.0.0.13 was 7100-ish. Now with v20 its in the 6600 zone. Not that it really matters at all with the whole faster camera, on-demand paging, and all are the new features, but just something I noticed.

No, it works. Is it that difficult to reinstall it before saying such things ?

my n95 won't upgrade it is not fom pack and not available in french ...it says version 12.0.013 and no 20.0.015 so it is only for uk or what?

just a few bugs in my opinion well more annoyances to me
Im one who liked exposing the music keys and the screen going to the media menu automatically now it seems that its gone maybe if there is another update this can be included as an on/off option
I really like organising my menu Ironically nokia has created folders such as connect and media like i did i usually on my main menu screen Now these folders are within folders and cant be moved to the main menu which really is a personal annoyance as i like to organise my menu MY WAY
Usually nokia would place new folders on the main menu what happened? Anyone knows a work around?
Lastly from what ive been hearing the call log "mobile icon for all calls" bug hasnt been fixed
And Steve whats this menu change application file that i saw on darlas site about changing the menu setup? Can you shed some light on this?

Any ideas, suggestions, help.

Im having problems with my USB sometimes it works sometimes it wont, when it wont it doesnt work for ages then suddenly does. I fear this is another stupid bug 😞

ADDITIONAL NEW CHANGE NOTICED:

Video Ringtones now supported - as per the 6120c

The new firmware now allows you to choose a video file, when setting a personalised ringtone for a contact, just like the 6120c already lets you.

Version 12 WOULD let you choose one, but only the AUDIO of the file got played.

Version 20 now allows proper video ringtone playback.

NOTE:

Difference between N95 and 6120c - The N95 plays back the videos with a tiny bit of black bordering to either side, as if the video was not quite the correct proportion (note that a 240 pixel video will automatically be played back smaller, in a box on the screen). But on the 6120c no black bordering is visible.

Also however, on the N95, underneath the video THREE lines of text are displayed, instead of just TWO as per the 6120c, so on the N95 the name, AND number of the caller is displayed.

Strange, given that they have the same pixel resolution for each screen, so I suspect what has happened here is that the newer firmware of the N95, v20, has been updated to allow the number to be listed too when using video ringtones. However, in so doing, the actual size of the video displayed in a box is slightly smaller, resulting in the minor black bordering on the sides.

Hope this info is useful.

But I personally think video ringtones are great, especially as an easy way to get around the tiny thumbnail limit of current symbian nokias.

And I find an easy way to make them, is to use Microsoft PhotoStory3, and just add four to eight static photo images, have it add panning effects, set the duration of each to around 4-5 seconds, and then save as a wmv file.

Then use Nokia Video Converter to make it an .mp4 ideal for use on the phone. Voila.

Unregistered wrote:In the themes menu, theres an option to turn 'theme effects' on or off. I have not seen this before... is that new??

I think it is a new feature yes, not seen what it is tho, Maybe its like the samsung themes where the theme changes depending on what time or if we have a message or not...

also why does the missed call icon come up in all menus but not the main screen??

Can't wait to see what you are hiding from us Steve!
Hmmm... You erased your post, thats makes me even more curious!!! 😊 😉

Is the video editor still in there? Or did they follow the n95 8gb and took it out.

does anyone know if it's possible to disable the integrated search?

Video editor is still there. I'm hoping it reappears in the 8GB version too....

Re: tracking. Yes, do shut up, please, with all the moaning. Nokia Maps only ever advertised real time turn by turn instructions with the paid version. That they let slip a poor man's visual version with the first betas is irrelevant - it's now working as they'd like it to, etc. Personally, at £5 for a month's voice guidance, activated when I need it and not before, I'm more than happy.

Daimonji wrote:No, it works. Is it that difficult to reinstall it before saying such things ?

Of course I reinstalled it; no need to be insulting. Just for the hell of it, I did it again just now. Still doesn't work for me. Does it work for you?

Generally, the memory requirement of individual programs have indeed been dramatically reduced.

For example, Opera Mini 4 allocated 10M of RAM even w/o any loaded page under the prev ROM versions. Now, it "only" takes 4-5M at start, and this slightly fluctuates (but never ever reaches 10M) when you open new pages.

BTW, an excerpt from the official version history: "enabling you to run faster and longer - giving you up to three more hours of music (up to 30% increase, from 9h to 12h of music playback"

As far as the 9h figure (previous ROM version) is concerned, Nokia IS exaggerating - many of us "only" measured a pretty meagre 6...6.5 hours. See http://www.howardforums.com/#post10282055 for individual reports.

I'll surely test the battery life improvement next night and report back.

I am not sure there will be a tremendous improvement in battery life. Battery life improvement was reported in the version of demand paging that would come out with version 9.3 of S60, not the 9.2 that n95 runs on.

Upgraded my n95. The new firmware is a tremendous improvement.

However, I'm no longer able to change the display font by placing a font folder in the resource folder of my memory card. Has anybody else noticed this with v20?

Enfors wrote:N95 owners, enjoy these firmware updates while they last. Soon you probably won't be getting anymore. Look at us N93 owners - we bought what was then Nokia's flagship phone, which stopped receiving firmware updates about 6 months after launch. We still don't have A2DP (bluetooth stereo sound), for example. And we still have a buggy firmware.

I am a n93 user too, and honestly speaking, I have lost hope that a firmware update will *EVER* come out for the n93. So stop expecting one. The only thing we can do is live with this or move to another phone.

Even SE had not ignored their P990i. Nokia has set new standards here as far as letting their customers down is considered.

Nokia was never interested in keeping their customer base - only interested in the new customers (more opportunities) - that is the business model😉 and that is sad... I can understand this business model from Apple (iphone), but Nokia (NO - Killed In Action)

All I hope is O2 get their finger out with this one. If you go into an O2 shop they'll supply you with an N95-1 with product code 0548021 with the v12 firmware, have been doing so for a couple of months now.

If however you have a phone bought before they rolled out v12 in the shops...well your stuck with v11 through NSU. I've contacted O2 who told me to contact Nokia who told me to contact a Nokia Care Centre who told me it would take 14 days! 14 days to do a 10 minute job! Hint for all Care Centre employees, get a second PC, start one phone updating on the first PC, switch to the second and start that one, by that time the first will be nearly done!

Thats right Taomyn, the "Themes" Icon did disappear.

But its now hidden away back in Settings, in Personalisation.

Which is a bit inconvenient as I'm constantly changing my themes.

Ah well.

Other than that, everything seems neat & tight!

4 stars!

the funny thing is that even if the battery has been improved 30%, now the mobile is more "usable" and you'll end up using it more and more reducing the up time with one battery charge to less than before. 😊

DKlaus, you do not need to do it twice. It is always full upgrades, not incremental ones, you can go straight from any version to V20.

PM

You're not alone - the case is the same with HTC on WinMo... without XDA-Devs, owners of "older" (>1 year) models would be totally let down.

All device manufacturers use the same aprroach... I'm a WinMo guy and pretty much know all models & all official upgrades... all manufacturers stopped releasing updates after a 1...1.5 year of a device's hitting the shelves. You won't show me a 2-year-old WinMo device still receiving device-specific (not generic, non-device-specific EUU) upgrades.

I said this because reinstall worked fine for me. Of course you have to reinstall the accelerometer extension that this app uses.

Btw I wasn't insulting you, and please do not stay anonymous : I consider this as not being very polite when you say something to someone.

My N95 is Pay As You Go on T-Mobile. I puchased it sim-free with version 12 on. I cannot download version 20. Any suggestions?

Sorry, but you're wrong. Nokia has always said that basic navigation was free. Voice and re-routing (if driven off course) was paid.

Am I to believe that not only did they let it "slip" in the application but they let it "slip" into the N95 manual as well?

Please.

Sorry if this has been asked before (I'm having a sneaky look at this forum at work!) - does anyone know when the new firmware will be available in the UK? I've been frantically checking nokia.co.uk for the past 2 days but it still says 12.0.0.13 is the latest firmware.

Has anyone spoken to Nokia UK about it?

Firmware isn't made available by region, it's made available by product code. If you have the EURO1 product code then it's available, but most probably you have a branded handset from T-Mobile, Orange, Vodafone etc. and you have to wait for your provider to make the firmware available, or debrand your phone (change the product code and install generic firmware).
