The Nokia N86 gets v21 (minor) firmware update

The Nokia N86 8MP just got a minor update to v21 firmware. Version 21.006 replaces v20.115 and is, unashamedly, a maintenance release, improving performance further and fixing a number of minor bugs. We might have to wait for an official changelog for this one, but please comment if you can add a specific observation. v21 is now available via Nokia Software Update and over the air on the phone itself in most regions. There's full User Data Preservation, but back up to memory card, just in case? (via CJ)

Read on in the full article.

From Nokia Support Discussions.

"Ok, so I've installed the new firmware, and here are the first noticable changes:

Theme Effects : now working very nice and actually quite fast, from my point of view!

GPS Lock without Assistance: The GPS locks my current position in about 5 seconds, utterly fast, and without using any assistance at all!

Real Player fullscreen keys: Still not working, at least on my phone.

Music visualisation slugger: Still there.

Overall, it seems like a better experience, the phone is just a little bit more responsive, the remaining bugs are way too minor to affect the user. Another noticed change would be the camera's focus speed, I think it's faster, too. That and the face detection, that works faster also.

Hopefully I won't find another bugs on the way! :smileyhappy:"

Do you mean just on the 5-way? The HW keys are working right?

The keytones are working in the homescreen. Although I find the animation a bit slower, it just freezes for a millisecond before that swipe effect

For Real Player in landscape mode we can't use the D-Pad for backward and forward. Theme Effects are ok even if a part of the screen is "forgotten" during the transition portrait->landscape.

I haven't spotted new bugs, at least.

if anybody can explain how to get NSU to work on Windows 7 Ultimate i would be very grateful ... i still cannot update my N86 and it is somewhat frustrating as hell

Anyone else here disappointed that this only seems to be a minor maintenance update? I really can't see any big difference between this and v20. Ok, a couple of bugs have been fixed but is the phone really any better at all??? I mean, seriously?

This makes me really curious about the changelog.

It also seems that not English characters like or are now properly displayed in Nokia Email.

And like always, i've to wait ages with my T-Mobile-Germany-branded, white N86...
I'm still staying at v11 (!!!!!)
Please Nokia... don't let me wait that long with v21... 😞

Here you go,

Firs you have to Run as Administrator

Then, Right click the .exe file and choose Troubleshoot compatibility

It will then ask you to select troubleshooting option

Select the 2nd option, Troubleshoot program

and tick the 1st and 3rd, and then next

It will then ask you which version of Win did this program work on before

Select Windows Vista (SP2), and then next

and click Start the program...
100% works on Win7 Ultimate 64bit.

ok thanks ... i tried all of that ... multiple times ... and uninstall - reinstall multiple times ... always it downloads the update ... says "installing..." and then "connect to a proper usb port etc etc" or whatever that usb error message is

i'm still stuck on v11 because of it and i was hoping for better luck today but the same old routine produced the same old results

*sigh*

i'm getting really sick of nokia and their crappy software

way to be lame nokia, v21 comes out and my newest update is v20 :/ guess its another 3 months till i get the "new" one...

Hello, please use the latest "Nokia Ovi Suite" for Windows 7 Ultimate it is OK on 100% !!!

To the whiners complaining that their branded phones are not being upgraded, get a clue. Go to your operator, NOT NOKIA. Branded phones are at the mercy of the operators. How many times does this need to be explained?

My new N86(just one week) was shutting down for like 4-5 seconds.
After the update shuts down after 1(!) second!
Anyone else with this?
The phone came with 20.115

To anyone who's updated to v21, in Menu is 'Music' folder still a folder or has it changed back to the normal Music icon? When i updated to v20, 'Music' changed to a folder!

to be fair my complaint was directed at O2 and not at nokia... nokia dont approve O2s firmware, in fact it is exactly opposite and O2 approve nokias firmware, hence my complaint being fired at O2 😊

a-hahahaha hahaha hahaha
*wipes eyes*
what a complete bunch of useless f**ks nokia are

i try NSU - fail
i try PC Suite - fail
i try Ovi Suite - fail

i will be happy when nokia go to the brink of bankruptcy and decide to be less arrogant with teir customers ... they need to stop releasing new handsets every 2 months and fix the ones people have already paid money for

such a joke this company has become
they must die now

focusing also seem faster (much faster) with v21 :icon14:

Theme effects are very good/fast now

Auto rotation a bit faster, but not as fast as with v11 still :frown:

GPS lock seem a bit faster (without A-GPS, just integrated), although this could be subjective, so don't take it for granted, at least until we see full change log.

Haven't noticed any new bugs yet!

Cheers,
Miki

Updated yesterday - lots of little fixes (one not yet mentioned is that my phone no longer keeps asking me to bring up a wifi connection even when in offline mode)

HOWEVER - a big negative - my alarm clocked only beeped once instead of ringing this morning, and then my phone crashed. Luckily I was awake enough to notice. Haven't been able to recreate the bug today so far.

Generally happy with it but if you ask me, breaking the alarm clock functionality is a huge crime - someone could lose their job!

I found one good update with this new firmware: now the camera has face detection for multiple faces... at lest my N86 detected 4 faces. Nice!

All good here in Manila. Updated OTA first time with no problems.

Reading the posts makes me feel lucky to have a phone that is working perfectly.
