call log bug fixed yet?
The Nokia N86 gets v21 (minor) firmware update
that's right ... of course it must be my fault
do you by any chance work for nokia?
i only ask because that seems to be their attitude towards their customers these days
oh and fyi...
clean install of windows 7
clean install of NSU - fail
uninstall NSU - reboot - clean install of PC Suite - fail
uninstall NSU - reboot - clean install of Ovi Suite - fail
so yah it mst be me cos clearly there is more to installing and using a piece of software than... you know... installing and using it ...
oh wait!! i know... maybe it's because i didn't keep up my subscription to <i>"secret ways and hidden tricks of using nokia software"</i> so i don't know which leg to shake out of the window whilst sacrificing a chicken on the correct day of the week to get it to work
if there's one thing i hate more than a corporation who puts greed in front of customers it's their fanboys who lick up all the crap they feed and then want more ... please refrain from sharing your genius with me in future
^you do realize that you are the only one having this problem. How can it be Nokia's fault or the posters here when a lot more of them have success? Don't take what they say personally and don't be too bitter. One of the problems of these updates I noticed is the "time out" in internet connection. Once that happens, it fails. But this being a small update, it is unlikely unless your firmware is older than v20.
If you can't do this yourself, take it to a service center, I'm sure they'll update it for free (under warranty). Goodluck
try using google for "problems updating firmware on nokia phone" and see how many people have issues with:
1. wrong version of some xml lib
2. not being able to update from usb ports on laptops
3. internal errors with pc suite and ovi
and then tell me it's just me
i'm not taking things personally ... i just dislike intensely when a smart-ass fanboy criticizes anything that criticizes the object of their fanboydom ... it isn't helpful or looked for
the fact that nokia doesn't have care point stores in all towns makes it difficult to take my phone in to be updated ... sending it in means up to 2 weeks without a phone - rather a non-starter
if this was rocket science i would be a little more patient but really? updating a phones firmware via a usb connected pc?? i mean it's hardly nobel prize stuff is it? c'mon be honest
people buy nokia for the quality they perceive in the name brand ... the reality these last 18 monts or so has been woefully different and i think the brand name of nokia will begin to diminish as the customers they have burnt badly during this time not only turn away themselves but turn potential other customers away ... it's a slow process to start with but it gains it's own momentum alarmingly quickly
i think after 5yrs and more than $2500 with nokia i will move on to something else this year and of course will recommend others to do the same ... they have failed in basic rule #1 of keeping customers: keeping customers happy
all these things (devices with alpha firmware, desktop software that doesn't work, customer service that is arcane and opaque) are symptoms of the start of the decline and i think honestly that they need to fail and break down and remake themselves as they were when they made the reputation they are living from today
that's my $2 worth and i will say no more
i will use my N86 as-is until i dump it for a different device from a different manufacturer with a different OS ... i feel bad selling it to anyone as i think it sucks so badly
Try using google to look up problems for anyything with anything and you will get screenfuls of results.
Mine is Windows 7 Home premium, ovi suite and no issues. Some people just can't be helped.

PS, I'm not a fan boy at all. I am just not inept.
No, it's not Nobel prize stuff, which makes me wonder why some people have so much trouble. You would have thought that updating firmware via a USB port would be simple enough, yet some people seem to be able to screw even that one up!
have you tried Fimware Over The Air?

what a complete bunch of useless f**ks nokia arei try NSU - fail
i try PC Suite - fail
i try Ovi Suite - faili will be happy when nokia go to the brink of bankruptcy and decide to be less arrogant with teir customers ... they need to stop releasing new handsets every 2 months and fix the ones people have already paid money for
such a joke this company has become
they must die now
yes i did ... it finds the update but only gives me the option to update via a pc
in response to the other posters... fair enough it must be me being too stupid to get it to work so please genuinely can you help
i am a software developer who has no problems writing and deploying apps in multiple languages on windows platforms ... i can install and use and write software for linux systems ... i can build pc's ... i can fix networking issues ... i teach programming at times too
now if i am really too stupid to get the nokia software to update my phone then clearly something isn't right somewhere
my computers are:
an old desktop running xp
a thinkpad t500 with windows 7 ultimate 64bit
a thinkpad t41p running windows 7 ultimate 32bit
all of them fail with the "plug into a proper usb port..." message with NSU or PC Suite ... with Ovi Suite they all fail with "internal error"
now i am open to learning new things so if anyone can point me to where i am "not getting it" i would be happy to follow
thnx

THis is the same I think!
Nokia did a lot of errors in the past but now they are doing more.
they are on the market since the beginning of mobile phone But stil copying from new brand:
mail from Blackberry, store and net service from iPhone, etc
Apple say: if you want to use my Iphone you have to give full internet service and operators give internet
Nokia instead always say yes to operators without asking nothing for customers
Operators say: Nokia we don't want you put voip services: and nokia stopped to give us the voip on the mobile net.
....
And with this update firmware still don't listen opinion from customers!!!
An excellent strategy by Nokia is to make the updates etc just so the dumbasses and half wits can't do it, and this gets rid of them as customers and gets them off Nokia's case. Then all the people of average and above intelligence make a better customer base.

Prime example.
One less now.
It's weird, why the size of the update through phone OTA is around 650 KB, and by using OVI Suite is around 139 MB?
Could anybody explain?
I didn't notice this thread, my observations:
lukpot wrote:All in all, I'm somewhat disappointed with this update - while some issues are resolved, the others are still there.
I can confirm that at least these bugs are still unresolved:
charging light behavior, "already in use" message when deleting a picture that was just taken, multiple (visible) contacts and ovi chat processes, kickstand that won't open any program if the keypad is locked, minor full screen clock option inconsistency...I bolded the two I think are the most important to fix because those problems make some hardware parts of the phone useless (battery charging indicator and kickstand)
Most of these look like really-easy-to-fix bugs, so I don't understand why they are still present.
I hope that I'll at least see some stability improvements with this version.
Juan Ortiz wrote:I found one good update with this new firmware: now the camera has face detection for multiple faces... at lest my N86 detected 4 faces. Nice!
It was like that with v20 too

downloading only what has changed/downloading everything
Unregistered wrote:To anyone who's updated to v21, in Menu is 'Music' folder still a folder or has it changed back to the normal Music icon? When i updated to v20, 'Music' changed to a folder!
1. Unfortunatelly Music folder is still a folder 😞 Maybe hard reset could help here ?
2. Unpausing music player bug (unpausing music after a call, even if it was paused before the call) - the bug is gone!!
greenender wrote:1. Unfortunatelly Music folder is still a folder 😞 Maybe hard reset could help here ?
Hard reset does help
Just updated to v21 via NSU. Took about 12mins or so.
Everything seems okay so far. No new features so most likely under the hood work which was what everyone wanted.
Some bugs have disappeared whilst others still remain. 'Music' is still the picture of a folder and not the original music icon (before v20) and some of the videos that came installed with the N86 will not play - you can hear the sound but no video content. I've heard a hard reset fixes all this like others have suggested so i may just need to do that i think.
Oh, one last thing. I updated via NSU but if i go into Apps -> Software Update: it still shows 'Phone software' (693kb). Surely because i've updated to v21 already via NSU this should not be there? I can't delete it, so should i just leave it alone? Or re-install again FOTA?
Does the GPS work for those who have V21 firmware?
rafiii wrote:Does the GPS work for those who have V21 firmware?
Yes, the same as with previous versions
Unregistered wrote:if anybody can explain how to get NSU to work on Windows 7 Ultimate i would be very grateful ... i still cannot update my N86 and it is somewhat frustrating as hell
:|
Why don't you try OTA? Faster, don't you think? WIFI?
OR
You can Run NSU in compatibility mode on WIN 7.
I got Win 7, but i didn't try NSU on that yet! I use it on my XP laptop.
Have you tried typing *#0000# into the home screen of the phone- then press options-check for updates? Thats what I did, it is only 600KB or something so it only took 2mins.
The new firmware is good. Much quicker and I haven't found any bugs yet. For some reason the internet radio bug worked itself out on v20 firmware as soon as 2010 started and step counter failed to work on new years day but now works again. I tried changing the date forward and backward a day on new years day and both caused step counter to work again. Very strange. I wonder if there were some problems with the clock on the phone.
Jst updated my phone to the new version.
One major bug in the music player has now been fixed.
Earlier if you left the music player on pause and a call or message came throug, after the call, the music player would automatically start playing the track, But now it does not happen....it was an irritating bug, which thakfully hs now been fixed.
The N86 has largely been an underdog Nokia flagship cameraphone. Does anyone remember the accolades the N95 got at its release and subsequently after that.Even now,the 8GB version is on sale.
What went wrong with the N86.I can see many of the local mobile shops have stopped stocking N86s because of the countless hardware & firmware niggles requiring replacements, in turn, bringing disrepute to shops.
My own N86 is a glaring White Elephant,Literally,in white. I bought it soon after release,it had SW ver.10.86, no problems whatsoever 'up'graded to v20.115, Countless bugs in addition to random phone shutdowns. Got it to Nokia Service, they took 3 weeks, gave me a reflashed and reformatted phone, and still , it had the same problem, yesterday was my unpteenth visit to Nokia Care, now, even the technicians recognise me. They couldn't diagnose the problem, they can offer me a refurbished phone, but I don't want an old phone for my sparkling new phone.
I have decided to move on,and get over with Nokia and their flagships.
Its not nokias fault that operators brand there handsets to there own software, they do this on pupose you know...... so you can pay to get it down!!!!
rafiii wrote:Does the GPS work for those who have V21 firmware?
It's working... slow at locking... but working... I just tested with Sygic... 5 minutes flat to get a lock
To Sey:
I had the same in black, T-Mobile Germany branding, but got fed up with it and debranded. I know there's a risk regarding the warranty, but it was worth it in my opinion.
I was skeptical at first, but it works briliantly now.
Does anyone have problems with email and firmware V21?
* I have set download intervall to 1 hour, but it checks every 30 minutes.
* Also I set automatic download of "messages under 100kb", but it downloads only headers.
With former firmware V20 I did not had this problems.
Hi,
With v20 firmware, I used to have a problem where when I recorded a video, a couple of seconds after starting the recording it would stutter, once. Not a major problem.
With v21 firmware, it now stutters every few seconds when recording video (and the stutters are permanently in the resulting file during playback)... Which makes the video camera totally useless for me. Not great as I have a young baby who I've been filming a lot with my phone, and she's not going to be young for long.
Can anyone else recreate this problem?
