E90: Gaming Machine?

Published by at

In our last poll, we asked you which current S60 3rd Edition model you most wanted added to the new N-Gage platform. Rather surprisingly, the vote was overwhelmingly in favour of the Nokia E90 Communicator, a business-oriented phone. Click on the headline to see the full story including all the results.

The phone models included in the poll are all technically better than the N73, which is included in the new N-Gage platform, and any of the following should technically be compatible with the new games. For some reason Nokia hasn't (yet) included these phones in the platform though.

We received 179 votes before the poll was closed, here's how they were divided up:

1. Nokia E90 - 54 votes (30.17%)

2. Nokia 6120 (including the 6121) - 29 votes (16.20%)

3. Nokia E61i - 21 votes (11.73%)

4. Nokia E61 (including the E62) - 13 votes (7.26%)

5. Nokia 5700 - 9 votes (5.03%)

5. Nokia E65 - 9 votes (5.03%)

7. Nokia N76 - 8 votes (4.47%)

8. Nokia E51 - 7 votes (3.91%)

8. Nokia N92 - 7 votes (3.91%)

10. Nokia 6290 - 6 votes (3.35%)

10. Nokia N75 - 6 votes (3.35%)

12. Nokia 6110 - 4 votes (2.23%)

12. Nokia N77 - 4 votes (2.23%)

14. Nokia E50 - 2 votes (1.12%)

While it does initially seem odd that something like the E90 could do so well on a gaming-related poll, it's worth pointing out that it has a wonderfully large screen, a 3D graphics acceleration chip (which at the moment does precisely nothing) and a rather good free game built-in called Global Race. It also has a full keyboard which has lots of buttons and a d-pad laid out horizontally, so potentially very gamer-friendly controls there.

On the other hand, the E90's main internal screen is a non-standard size, and much larger than the QVGA (320x240) resolution that the existing Next Gen N-Gage phones use, so it's unlikely that any games would be written to take advantage of the E90's hardware. The E90 does have a QVGA external screen though, so it could run the new N-Gage games perfectly well on that.

It may be that people who've shelled out €800 or more for the E90 expect to be able to get the most out of it, and can't understand why the ancient N73 gets in on the gaming action while the supersleek E90 doesn't.

Perhaps the most plausible candidate for adding to the new platform is the 6120, which is a very cheap, very small, very light and very popular model. It's aimed squarely at the mainstream market, and despite its low price it has almost all the computing features of more expensive models like the N95, including a 369mhz processor and 3.5G HSDPA (which lets you get a broadband-speed multi-megabit internet connection through the phone network).

If the 6120 was added to Next Gen N-Gage, it would dramatically reduce the entry cost of the platform as the phone costs just €250 brand new and unlocked, and it's free on almost any contract.

The E61 (and its wifi-free cousin the E62) are almost identical to the E61i, and they too are odd choices for a gaming-related poll. They're mainly meant to compete with the Blackberry niche market of email phones, featuring a full-size QWERTY keyboard.

But by all accounts these models are very popular, and perhaps their most pro-gaming feature is their screen: it's enormous! At 2.8", only the recently-released N95 8GB can match it for physical size, and thanks to its clarity and brightness games really do look great on the E61/E61i/E62.
