Okay, did manage to update my firmware on a branded (Orange UK) phone using the online update service. Turns out the applet wasn't initiating for some reason on my PC (inspite of the latest JRE installed from Sun), so did it on a friend's PC. piece of cake and took me a total of around 50 mins using a 256kbps cable line.
Firmware is :
Phone: CXC162022 R3C006
Bluetooth: CXC12529 R5D
Organiser: CXC162021 R3A06
CDA: CDA162004/3 R4B01

If I remember correctly, the Autoupdate service asks you to enter the CDA no (162004/3), but flashes the latest version of the Organiser firmware (R3A06) which you already seem to have. Its your CDA that seems to be older. So you could try going ahead with the update anyway and it should get you the latest version...

I updated phone, but it still show these versions, so no change:
Tommen,
You do have the latest firmware version. Organiser R4A06 is indeed the latest version.

Agree, so vikas CDA: CDA162004/3 R4B01 doesn't exist? Or is there an other reason?

Well my CDA IS R4B01. Here are the details again:
Phone: CXC162022 R3C006
Bluetooth: CXC12529 R5D
Organiser: CXC162021 R3A06
CDA: CDA162004/3 R4B01
Have checked with my phone to confirm. Funnily, even the SE Update service confirms that the latest organiser version is R3A06. How come you have a later version of the organiser???

Hehe, i didn't notice i had a later version of org before you mention it. This is vierd 😊 Hope somone see the messages we have written.. Somone that know why etc 😊
Whats really wierd is that we all prolly update from same site online....
😕
What is so hard to understand? Vikast, you have the previous firmware version. Tommen, you have the latest. The firmware version is determined by the ORGANISER version NOT the CDA version. The CDA version doesn't have any real relevance to the actual firmware. The CDA version is just used to describe the customizations made to your particular handset. It describes things like language and operator.
The reason why vikast can't upgrade to the latest version via the online update service is that his P900 is operator branded.

Hey everyone. I'm trying to update my P900 via the update service on sony ericsson's site but I get a message saying my operator doesn't support the service. I'm in Califonia using T-Mobile. Does this mean I cant update my phone?
Here are my phone specs:
Phone: CXC162022 R3C006
Bluetooth: CXC12529 R5D
Organiser: CXC162026 R1A08
CDA: CDA162003/13 R1A08
I have tried and tried but everytime i use the SE update i get "Error in communicating with the device" Any help is appreciated

I would suppose that you are getting this error due to Java scripting issues with your browser. With that said I suggest you go through this thread and others on this forum for suggestions to how to either tweak your browser or for available options...

Was your phone branded or possibly a dev phone at one point? I think SE is cracking down on owners that have simply reflashed their phones at a service point to bypass the Online update rejection. It may be affecting some phones that weren't purchased through contract, but who's origin belongs to an operator that isn't permitting 'free flashing'. I saw this coming and warned a lot of users that SE would catch up on their tactics. Being that this new release is still fresh we'll have to wait a couple weeks for the dust to clear the air. I plan on updating tonite. I will post results.
Thanks. I've tried on multiple computers with no luck. I think i'm going to send it in to SE for "re-flashing" I've already got an RMA.
This phone was originally purchased in HK

Hi Raven, thanks for that. But I DID manage to upgrade my firmware using online update, except I got R3A06. So obviously the online update works for branded phones as well. And if it does, there's no reason why they should allow branded phones to get an older version of the firmware. Could it be possible that R3A06 IS the latest version of the firmware for my (orange UK) branded phone, while R4A06 is the latest for other (unbranded) phones?
If not, then maybe I should go to orange and have my phone upgraded..

Well...I'm not too sure what a branded phone is. It says T-Mobile on the main screen (flip closed), but thats the only place that shows what service I'm using (besides control panel). I just know that my phone is an english/chinese phone. Also, I've noticed under the battery a label that says "Approved by IDA for use in Singapore". I'm not sure if that would give me problems updating here in California, USA.
EDIT: I just tried updating again and the service showed showed me the message "There is currently no service for devices belonging to your operator" and "Your operator does not approve the usage of this service for this device."
Under the battery on the label, you have the originally CDA number 162003/x or 162004/x
😊

If you don't have the latest firmware release R4B03 then u didn't really 'successfully' upgrade then. That revision is the latest. Anything less is 'passe'. The updater will court you through the process regardless of whether your phone is approved or not. However, the end results will confirm the pre-confirmation that you got at the start of the process. I'm not sure why most users go through the process when the system doesn't indicate that their phone will be flashed with the latest SE confirmed firmware revision. Wishful thinking I guess 🙄

I see what you mean, but from my point of view, I did get a sort of upgrade from my previous firmware (which was organiser R1 or R2 something) to R3A06. Which leads me to believe that they DO release online updates even for branded fones. These may be a version or two behind the others, perhaps, based on what you are suggesting. Or maybe they release a new version for standard phones, and then there's a lag by the time they release the same version for various operator branded phones - which means that unbranded versions of the firmware will alsways be newer than those for branded phones (at least online). Just a theory...
Vikast -
That is and always be the case. You may upgrade to what your operator has approved. Thus, the online update is still pointless for those in your situation for the fact that you more likely will upgrade to a firmware that has known bugs. One of the primary purposes of firmware upgrades is to address known bugs. Bugs may not stop a unit from functioning per manufacturer spec, but they increase the likelihood of vunerable software flaws to be exposed. It seems like your unit was way behind. However, you may still see some of the issues that some of us saw with R3A06. The Organiser does play a big role in the P900 functionality. The release notes does address what factors are affected by it. So updating it to that really may not help you if you look at the big picture.

Orange are evil. I am currently with them but my contract has just expired and I am waiting for my new P900 on O2 (I did want to go with Voda, but I wouldn't have got my new phone until the number had been ported which could have taken up to 17 days!).
I hate the fact that they lock their phones and I also hate the restrictions on upgrading the firmware. However, what I hate most is their truly appalling customer service. I have never in my entire life had such atrocious customer service as I had from Orange.
If Orange were the only alternative to carrier pigeon, I'd be off to buy some birdseed tomorrow.
ok guys, I just bought a p900 (it sooo cool), formerly on tmobile but now unlocked to use an 02 pay as you go sim. I was wondering is there anyway to replace the annoying tmobile startup vid with something none operator specific (simple SE logo vid)? Also the internet settings seemed to be locked to Tmobile settings. I heard that a firmware update should sort these out but does the official SE firmware update site provide generic firmware or are they just suggesting a firmware update for TMobile?
any help would be much appreciated. thanks
P900 from Orange UK i'am serching for french language file of this frimwere
Phone: CXC162022 R3B004
BT: CXC12529 R5D
Org: CXC162021 R1C01
CDA: CDA162004/3 R2B01
Is there a newer one after this?
I got my P910i about 2 weeks ago. Currently i have R4A02 and the newer from SE site is the R4A10.
So i want to backup, upgrade, format and restore the phone. BUT:
i want to backup also sms, MMS, all contacts, calnedar and Tasks. If i make a backup from the software (latest available) will i have these? They are important to me and wouldn't wanna lose them.
It's my only step before proceeding to upgrade. Thanx in advance for any replies.
No files will be lost if you are going to backup your phone.
