Ok, i have read throughout the whole thread and have a question:
1/ The update process presumably essentially replaces the old firmware, it doesnt just update parts. I assume this because if your phone is buggered you can fix it through the online update service.
2/ The software relies on you to tell it which firmware version you have
SO, surely this means that if you have an orange phone but you give it the CDA number of a non-orange phone you can update it yourself. Of course you might lose the customization but u can always back some of that up anyway.
Just an idea, but i am too scared to try it with my new baby at the moment, am i missing anythign glaringly obvious?
[1] - Firmware esssentially replaces everything, so true.
[2] - Yes, but your incorrect in your reasoning here. The online encrypted update service apparently makes numerous calls to the ROM drive that stores your CDA (I think it is the Z: drive but I forget off the top of my head). This has been hashed over in numerous threads on various forums by people with far more knowledge than I, and as far as I know nowbody has been able to fool the online updater as of yet. Theoretically it would be easy if you could gain access to the ROM drive that contains the CDA number in a text file and reflash that ROM with whatever CDA you want. Anyway, the only way to reflash your unit is a SE service center, I have never been to one and don't even know how I would go about finding one in the USA, nor do I have any idea how they would about re-flashing the phone but apparently they can 😊

I have previously posted a thread asking can the o2 welcome screens be removed from my P900.
I am please to say that i have now managed to get my P900 firmware upgraded to the original SE R3C. This has overwritten and removed the O2 welcome / goodbye screens and replaced them with the SE logo .. at last..
However now when i enter the service menu by jogg and * combination, the previous hardware tests have changed, and dont seem to respond correctly.
The display test on R1A05 used to scroll many colour modes across the screen.
Now on R3C all what happens is a black band on the left hand side of the screen appears.. Can anyone with this firmware confirm if there display test still works correctly.
The phone itself operates correctly.. and all other test seem to work ok.
dave.birch,
I merged your thread with this already existing thread about firmware.
And please, when you refer to your firmware use the ORGANISER version, not the "phone" version. The phone firmware version isn't relevant at all.
dave.birch, how did you manage to update the firmware?
I'm also interested in removing pre-installed cr@p. What do I use to format the P900? Which drives should be formated? Wouldn't a backup also backup pre-installed software?
I have downloaded the pc client(seus_setup111)but when i try to install it decompress and nothind happens. Can anyone help me?
I had an interesting conversation yesterday with an Orange Customer Service rep. His advised me that there are no plans to release an orange branded update flash and I should take my phone to a service center to get them to apply an update!
I pointed out that this will remove all orange branding and he seemed to think this wouldn't be a problem which surprized me somewhat.
I'm guessing the organiser update will only remove the startp/shutdown clips for orange and a few other connection settings. I guess the phone software controls any form of provider lock so it will still be an 'orange' phone but without the branding.
I'm waiting for confirmation from orange that this doesn't break the agereement. I'll keep you posted
Today I got the new Firmware in Amsterdam , The Netherlands.
Phone: R3C006
Bluetooth: R5D
Organiser: R3A06
CDA: R3A05
got it done at the shop where I bought it. For free.
If not bought there, they will charge you 25 Euro.
Have not noticed anything yet in the software, although it seems that the sliding with the sliders in video and audio is a bit faster, as if there is no buffering needed anymore.
Can you take you p900 to a service centre and get a complete AVR and ARM flash so that it will no longer be considered an orange phone. Then you can update at will.
Yes, you can get the new upgrade here. 😃 [NOTE: Some of you who have a P900 that is locked to a network may not be able to use the online upgrade service at this point]
I'm in the middle of restoring a back-up right now, but will report back if I notice any changes in this new firmware.
Ok, I'm very happy to report that the bug causing the phone to restart when installing applications no longer seems to exist! 😊
One strange thing though, after the upgrade I checked the firmware version on the phone, and it showed the Bluetooth version as; N/A, but as usual I do a format before I restore a back-up, and after the format the Bluetooth version was back to R5D again...
Raven -
You're a mod dude.. You should know better then to generalize a statement that would allude one into thinking that the online access for this new upgrade is available to any P900. Tisk tisk tisk....
Hehe, ok ok, I will edit my post to "online firmware upgrade available for UNLOCKED or NON-OPERATOR SUBSIDIZED P900's"... Does that sound better to you? 😊
Btw, BigFeat, I was under the impression that you had an unlocked (one of the first available) P900...?
Another note, it appears that the online upgrade to firmware version R3A06 is only available for P900's with the CDA version; 162003/1 at the moment (http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=19494).
But this is likely to change in the near future, so just keep checking http://www.sonyericsson.com/updateservice/P900/frameset.htm for updates.
Raven,
When I stated you should clarify your statement I was referring to the tidbit about the update only being available to CDA 162003/1 at this moment. Hence 'all' P900 users would not be able to upgrade if they didn't meet that criteria. So that's the part I was looking for and it seems you have answered it in your subsequent post.
Moreover, I was careful with my comments for 2 reasons. I did not ask you to state "non-branded" P900s because P900s with carrier modified firmware were already excluded from the online upgrade processes. Moreover, the update did NOT include all "non-branded" P900s.... Therefore, using "non-branded P900s" as a choice of words would not have been wise either. 😉 I do have an early release, but guess what? I still can't update because I'm in the /3 bracket. Some early dev phones can't even upgrade now either.
This is what I get, but I heard that if you still go on with the update, it will change it to the lates, will try this later.

Where did you hear this? I doubt that is true. If that's correct then SE's system doesn't work. It does literally verify the CDA during the process m8. For instance, Orange user's still couldn't upgrade after ignoring the msg even though the were able to go through the entire process.
Great news!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just checked for updates again on SE site, the latest firmware org. R3A06 is now available for all CDAs from 162003/2 to 162003/8!!!!!!! Yaaaaaaaahhhhhhooooooooo!!!!! Dunno about after 162003/8 though.
You guys heard it here first!! Hahaha!
Updating now...... will keep you guys posted as to wert is the obvious difference (if any!!! ) Later...
No noticeable differences other then the entire transaction went by quicker. Never had "restart" issues in the past so I can't comment on that. No differences in BT as I didn't have real issues with that either. SE needs to publish the release notes if there is significant improvements...
First upgrade pics here 😃:

Phone:
CXC162022 R3A024
Bluetooth:
CXC12529 R5D
Organizer:
CXC162021 R1A05
CDA:
CDA162004/14 R2A01
does this mean i need to upgrade??? 😕
yes but you can't because sonyericsson does not support on-line updates with CDA162004/14. I don't know why and they won't help me either.

Hmm.. I guess this thread was too far down for you to read. We'll try a bit harder to make it obvious 🙄

I had this problem as well.
The way i got rid of it was to backup my data to pc with filemanager then format my c: & d: drivers and setup my p900 from scratch.
Since then i have not had the problem again. Even with the same firmware.
Can we not start a new thread here? waste of server space! 😃
@wahyudi,
Yours is older version. Pls check. Look at roganizer version. Latest is R3A06.
I get a fatal error when trying to update my P900 to the latest firmware level.
My system is a Window 2000 machine, patched with all updates and security patches.
My phone is P900, Organizer sw R2B02. Previously successfully updated to this level using the UpdateService.
The SEUS update software log lists a Java exception:

Since I'm a Java programmer, I can clearly see this is a programming error: SEUS expects a string containng a number and tries to convert it to an actual number... and fails, since it doesn't get a true number, but "MISDN1".
Anyone else had this?
I contacted SE support and got the following answer back:
-----------
Thank you for contacting Sony Ericsson on the World Wide Web.
Concerning your inquiry we would like to give you the following information:
Please contact one of the following service partners in order to receive the latest software-upgrade for your phone:
Bitte schicken Sie Ihr Mobiltelefon zur berprfung an eines unserer Service- und Repair-Center. Fgen Sie dem Paket eine Kopie des Kaufbelegs sowie eine Fehlerbeschreibung bei und denken Sie daran, Ihre persnlichen Daten zu sichern. Bitte bercksichtigen Sie, da wir die Kosten fr das Einschicken nicht bernehmen.

Funny, they ask me to send in my P900 to a service partner center for checking it.
However, I won't do that: I guess it's a standard answer: if updateservice doesn't work, tell customer to go to service center to update.
I'll patiently wait for a new release of the SE update software. 🙄
same here !!!
win xp, all updates
newest SE suite
tried different browsers
looks like the connection between phone and
pc gets lost during update process...
