great, mines gone tits up again. made sure i didnt accept any contact business cards, havent added anything except mumsms+

pissing me off now. will mail nokia...

What firmware have you got?

I've been doing all sorts with mine (v3.45.111) and not come across this problem.

the brilliant thing is checking fw is now impossible, touching the keys reboots it. however i happen to know from a previous failure that mines the same as yours...

mines the same firmware.

mine would reboot as soon as i pressed any key.

now it will not boot past the blue nokia text on startup.

i am not trying a hard reset.... i want orange to admit they shouldn't be selling the phones if they ar e not worn=king properly.

mine is v3.45.110 and that problem piss me off the whole night yesterday figuring out how to solve it. i think i'll mail nokia support for some information abt this problem

oops, quick check back through my old posts and my fw is actually 3.45.110 as above.

better find somebody to flash the upgrade for me i suppose. wish the warranty covered all the stuff i smashed in my rage when it went wrong again too...

oooopss. mine ends in 110.

is there anywhere on nokias site that says what they have fixed between firmware revisions?

got my phone running again, and collected a few contacts i lost. phones currently working ok, but i cant backup the contacts to pc. anybody else finding this?

just trying to be prepared

I just want to share my experience with the phone rebooting by itself. In two months of using this phone I got 4 or 5 reboots which I got the feeling were related to the bluetooth stack.
Yesterday I read another thread on this forum regarding a freeware program, Alarm Manager. I found the program interesting so last night I installed it and almost immediately switched off the phone to go to sleep. This morning I had three reboots in a row while writing email messages, something that I have done hundreds of times on this phone without problems.
I deinstalled the program and I had no other reboot during the day!

So my feeling is that, even if it is the phone that is at fault because it should be more robust, people who are having a lot of spontaneous reboots should check what software they have installed and understand if there is a specific program that is causing the instability of the phone....

UA

Important note: If you hard reset the phone, it will no longer work on Orange line 2. The menus will still appear but ALS is disabled. Incoming callers will get unobtainable tone and outgoing will result in a "not allowed" message.

So far I know of know way to get that bit working again. *sigh*

Jonathan

Incidentally if anyone else is tiring of the loss of contacts you can back them up to your sim. just go to contacts, options, mark all and copy to sim dir

Hi i no this is a bit off topic but i just wanted to ask a few questions. I am currently looking at buying a nokia 6630. Originally i was going to go to orange but i went into Phones4u and they offered me the phone for 40 and 500 xnet mins, 100txts, 50 mins video calling and 50mb gprs for 40 a month. i thought this was a good deal.

i was with phones4u about 3 years ago when they were with singlepoint and to be honest there customer service was appauling. Well useless and it would have been better with no customer service at all.

I just wanted to know whether the deal i have been offefred is any good? How good is vodafone? How good is phones for you? Also if the phone goes wrong how easy it is to sort out with phones4u.

Hope to hear soon

Just got my Orange Nokia 6630 phone yesterday and I too am getting random reboots. I am on their 3G network and was just sitting in Agile Messenger when it reboot itself. I am waiting for my laptop to come back from repair (it has a card slot) so that I can try reformatting the card to see if that helps. Only software I have installed is Putty SSH client and Agile Messenger. I have not yet added any contacts.

EDIT: Firmware version is 3.45.110 / 02-12-04 / RM-1

You'd think S60 would be sorted by now, it's been around long enough.

I'm just waiting for my 6630 to be delivered and I'm wondering if I've done the right thing after reading these posts. Had some problems with my 6600 a while ago and despite new firmware + multiple hard resets I still can't synch with PC suite any more (new dongle/ reinstalled XP etc too). Perhaps a 1100 would be easier.

well i have did some tinkering myself and the reboots always happends when i install unstale 3rd party programs. So far, upon using stable progs e.g quick office and themes, there is no problems at all.

So i think it's because corrupted prog causes all the rebooting.

It's just like your PC.

SimWorks announced today that it has identified the first threat able to disrupt the functioning of a Symbian phone that it can no longer be used to make phone calls. Previously identified threats, such as the Skulls trojans, have affected only the higher level functions of a device, not it's ability to make calls. Gavno is spread under the file-name patch.sis or patch_v2.sis and masquerades as a patch for Symbian OS. The patch_v2.sis file also contains a copy of Cabir and Camtimer trojan. Gavno.a cripples the system by using a malformed file to crash an internal Symbian process. Full press release is available @ SimWorks. Anybody can rename patch.sis to anything else so better watch out and only download files from trusted sources like My-Symbian.com.

Sounds a lot like our problem, posted at my-symbian.com

since disabling the bt on my phone i havent had a problem, the cabir and cantimer worms travel by bt. hope this is the solution!

incidentally as far as i know there is no working antivirus software for 6630 yet?

Anyone who installs apps sentto them via BT from someone they don't know deserve exactly what they get. Stupid asses. BT only has a small range so if I were silly enough to leave my BT connection on, exposed and I received an attempt from someone to send me such files I would very quickly scan the area for the shifty looking person and give them what for!!

no, neither would i. as i understand it though leaving your phones bt on makes it vulnerable to backdoor attacks from these viruses.

if this is what is causing our reboots, and not a firmware problem, id be a whole lot happier knowing theres a solution...

Nah, any virus/worm/trojan/whatever that attempts to spread via Blutooth needs the receiving party to a) accept the file, b) agree to install it and c) press yes through all the standard security warnings that are shown with unsigned apps.

And unfortunately many people do just that.

I have lost my line 2 then it came back a day later, with rebooting it omly happens with a bluetooth connected mine is a logitech.

😃 Hoorah ,,, a fix for that stupid 6630 rebooting problem !!

Still yet to find out why I actually got this problem, but as I can remember I was using Agile Messenger when my phone closed the program & back to the main menu (I had no other apps open), tried Agile Messenger again, closed after a few seconds.
Then shortly after tried to send a SMS text, immediately booted back to main screen, odd, tried SMS again, it booted me back to main screen.

Thinking something was wrong I backed up my entire phone C:\ drive.

Rebooted & had lots of problems, phone rebooted and rebooted, finally got it
back up & running in 'Offline' mode (without a SIM in the phone), but couldn't access my contacts or type in anything (a single press of the keys rebooted the phone).

Searching on the net I discovered my symptoms to be similar to the GAVNO virus:

http://www.geekzone.co.nz/content.asp?ContentId=3968

and a cure using an anti-virus program:
http://mobiletech.softwarecellulari.it/shop/eng_DettaglioArticolo.asp?ID_ART=4189

not wanting to part with cash for an AV program just yet & some spare time on my hands I messed around with the files on the phone to attempt to fix the problem.

Perhaps I don't actually have this GAVNO virus on my phone, or maybe I do, but basically the fix for me was to delete ONE file on the phone:

c:\system\data\PTIT9UDB0F.DAT

Immediately after this file was deleted everything worked again.
Tried rebooting to see if the .DAT file came back, hoorah it didn't, still working, now after 4 reboots all seems well. Bluetooth working fine, contacts, text, booting up is back to normal, everything so far works perfect again. 😃
Even Agile Messenger works perfect again now.

Not sure if this will be the cure for all 6630's, perhaps the GAVNO virus copies itself to different locations/filenames to confuse.

To discover the problem I ran a full backup using SpriteBackup 😎
(which obviously would also backup & include the rogue .DAT file), then I tediously removed file-by-file until the contacts list came back up.
Once discovered I restored from backup & messed around again with things until I pinpointed the exact file(s) causing the problem, luckily it just appeared
to be one rogue .DAT file.

I've seen many other posts on this problem, unsure if it will work for anyone else ,,,

(remember to make a full backup before doing anything),

Hope this advice helps,

DB

Well my phone rebooted twice yesterday while i was on the internet with Opera. It seems to be that specific webpage that requires a download. Everything else fine so far.

I deleted some prgrams i downloaded because they wouldnt run. They would just crash back to the front menu. Looks like alot of stuff out there isnt fully compatible with 6630 yet i assume.

Really liking it so far.

D BIZZZ,

You genius! You solved the problem for me too. I also had the rebooting issue but didn't fancy erasing everything from my phone so I backed up to MMC then did a hard reset.

I reloaded everything from the MMC only to have the same problem again. I did the tip mentioned above and it worked perfectly! So it seems its a virus and not a Nokia bug after all! 😊 Maybe some anti-virus software is needed for my 6630 from now on...

Thanks again!

I also had the rebooting. I formatted my MMC card on my laptop to normal FAT and also deleted c:\system\data\PTIT9UDB0F.DAT and this solved the problem. I am not convinced that the file is a virus as such but it may be causing the problem.

There was me all conceited with my latest firmware and the certainty it would never happen to me...

When yesterday afternoon, after playing a bit of Super Mario and checking my email with Profimail, the phone restarted when I pressed a number key. Knew what it was straight away.

BOLLOOOOOCKS!!!!!!!!! 😡

Luckily I remembered the name of the dodgy file and deleted it there and then with FExplorer and all was back to normal. Although I did look again afterwards and the file had been recreated, so it looks like it's a necessary system file.

This is definitely not a virus. Aside from the fact that for any Series 60 virus to infect your handset you've got to accept a transfer and agree to install it, my bluetooth is never on except when sending apps from my PC.

It looks like a serious firmware bug, and as shown by this thread alone is very common.

Nokia, sort it out!

I've now not had a uncontrolled reboot since removing the PTIT9UDB0F.DAT file and reformatting the MMC card in my laptop (not in the phone) to FAT. My PTIT9UDB0F.DAT has also returned (Date on file is 29/01/2005) but so far no problems.

I opened the file PTIT9UDB0F.DAT using notepad.

It appears to be a list of words, phrases I have written in texts I have sent.
I initialy thought it was related to the T9 dictionary, when you add a word, but this is not the case as some of the words in the file are everyday words.

Then I thought it was maybe a cahce of where copied text is kept when you use the pencil button.

Any one else open theres and see whats in it?
