News for those in the UK & a hint on the 7650i?

Orange is very likely to drop its GPRS charges by up to 75% next month, to just 2 for 1mb of Internet data. Finally those of us in the UK can use Tipic & IM+ without fretting over huge bills. They are also rumoured to be introducing a new a high user SMS bundle of 320 messages. http://www.whatmobile.net/forum/topic.asp?whichpage=1&ARCHIVEVIEW=&TOPIC_ID=6466
Other networks should follow suite within a couple of months meaning lower GPRS rates across the board before Easter, with sms prices dropping on contracts over the next 8-12 weeks (not related to the Orange bundle).

An internal memo at the buying dept of a major retailer issued on Friday had the following note next to the Nokia 7650:

"Sell through current stock, N-status (no re-orders to be placed); replacement imminent."

Hmm... it may only refer to the arrival of the 3650 but seeing as these have already been ordered on pre-pay (Retail: 299) & contract (80-130) I'm not sure that it does.... 😃

I don't expect to see any confirmation or denial of the 7650i rumour from anybody from Nokia, so nobody can actually claim it will exist or not. But what I take for granted is that there will be a quick answer to the P800, since the 7650 has at least one major drawback (the memory) compared to it, and I really do not believe that this answer is the 3650 since it is targeted at a somewhat different market.
I have a feeling we should expect another full featured symbian model from Nokia soon, whether it is called 7650i or something else.
3650 isn't a replacement for 7650 so it might mean 7650i. 😉
Don't be starting threads like the 7650i again 😉 Nokia wouldn't be daft enough to launch another 7650 with more memory and whistles and bells and still call it a 7650...

I'm NOT saying there WILL be a 7650i, I'm just saying anything is possible.
I'm NOT saying there WILL be a 7650i..<snip>
Go on, I dare you 😉 Go on, go on, go on, go on, go on!

ROTFLMAO 😃

Hmmm... I'd still love to see a photograph or scan of the main PCB inside the 7650... check out what IC's Nokia laid on the board.... I'm not totally convinced (well, not 100% anyways, maybe 99.9%) that a memory upgrade isn't out of the question... I'd engrave an "i" on the case and make my own 😊

Having said that, the electronics has to physically be able to address a larger memory device, extra address lines and what have you...

So... does anyone have any internals pics? Anyone willing to open their phone up and scan the board? 😃

COME ON EVERYBODY!!!!
See differences between 8910-8910i or 3510-3510i at http://www.nokia.com/phones/compare/compare.jsp. It's all about Java & Internet capabilities!!!!
7650 has all of it!!!!!!!!!! There will NEVER be an 7650i version!!!!!!!

So... does anyone have any internals pics? Anyone willing to open their phone up and scan the board? 😃
Well, I managed to find a couple of photos of the PCB, but
1) the markings on the ICs are not visible
2) I don't know if it is ok to post those pics since they appear to be part of a Nokia document or something..

If the moderators allow it, I'll post them for you to see that it appears quite difficult to replace anything on that board yourself!

Hell no... I'm *very* adept at surface mount technology 😊 I've been in the SMT game since '91 and regularly build boards by hand down to 0402 or 0603 components, with 20thou quad flat pack IC's being a doddle to fit 😉

All it takes is a keen eye and a *very* steady hand...

I'd very much appreciate to see the pics so long as the mods are happy... might be worth PM'ing one of them, just in case they skip over this thread...

Cheers!!

Well, I will certainly wait for the moderators' aproval before posting those photos since I believe they are from some technical document and might be confidential or something.
In the meantime though, using google I just found out a Chinese (?) site where somebody apparently opens it himself (I don't understand the language, I hope there's nothing illegal about it!!). I guess it can't be wrong to post this URL.

Oh... bugger... forget it!!! Those piccies are enough evidence thanks that even if the 7650 CPU had spare pins that would address larger memory devices.... *everything* on that board is a BGA (Ball Grid Array) which means very specialist equipment to remove and rework to refit a new device...

Basically, to the lay man on the street, it's IMPOSSIBLE to do.... I doubt very much even if a NSC would entertain upgrades even if it was possible... BGA's need x-ray inspection equipment to check the soldering for dry joints and shorts etc... unless of course you can see through ceramic 😉

IMHO, anyone asking about memory upgrades of the 4Mb flash device the 7650 is factory fitted with, should forget it.

Just read a post on the What Mobile UK forums, and we're not a lone case; Orange staff have been told they've stopped ordering 7650's today too.

Current stocks are all thats left. 😃

i was told at work today that there will not anynore 7650 made due to paediofiles getting hold of them dont no if this is true as they had heard it from somewhere

If that was the case then perhaps Nikon, Kodak and an array of other manufacturers ought to stop producing cameras. Then they could move on to digital cameras, scanners, cd writers, modems, the Internet and any other way of distribution, shut down the lot.

Sounds an unlikely reason to stop production.

Don't know why you guys are so sceptical about a 7650i. Whether it carries the model number 7650 is pretty much immaterial. There are two big industry events happening over the next two months, 3GSM in Cannes, 18th/21st Feb inclusive, and CeBit, 12th/19th March inclusive. All the big manufacturers will be announcing their product line up for this year at these shows. It's a certain bet Nokia will have something to replace the ageing 7650 (might be a new phone to some of you but in industry termss its ageing)

Don't forget Symbian Exposium in April 😉

So are there any nice phones coming out soon? All I can think of is p800, nothing else matches the 7650. [dont mention the HUGE UGLY 3650!!!]

If you have read the news,Siemens will announce two Symbian phones at CEBIT,my guess is Nokia has something up it's sleave,i dont think it is the 7650i,the new series 90 device maybe?

So when and where is CEBIT? I hope I can get the time to go.

Ok, next try: Twelfth of March to nineteenth of March 😉

I really want to upgrade the memory chip in my 7650, i do know that it has a 32megabit bga device in it and i have the level 1 and 2 service manuals and the opening video, I also have access to a bga rework station complete with the required x-ray equipment to check the job afterwards,

What i really need to know is, how much chance does this upgrade stand of working if i put a 64meagabit chip in its place?, will the phone initialise the new chip itself?, will the processor see the larger memory?, will the symbian os 6.1 have any problems seeing the new memory?,

I have to pay for any use of the bga rework station i use so would really like to get as much info on this as possible,

Cheers

There was a guy in here that replaced it but it didnt work for him. However we never saw the proof so we cannot say that it is true. He wasnt able to do phonecalls or something like that. Since nobody was successful we cannot actually say if it works or not!
