Sygic/McGuider GPS available now!

I found another issue during navigation. The application informs me only 200 meters before the turn. On previous version I had more sound informations. I use polish voice pack.

Well the updated fix for 7.70 has now been released and has fixed the Custom POI problem, application works superb now.

Although a couple of issues that "SonyM" might want to comment on:-

The update shows that it is V7.70 (1467), yet once you have completed the update, and run the application and go to "About" this shows V7.70 (1458)

Is there anything you can do to the ABOUT to reflect the current version.

Also:-

If I make an entry and save it as a favorite. Then go into Manage POI - Delete POI - Select Favorite, I am then presented with a list of entries, if I select one to be deleted. McGuider reports as done, BUT, you go NAVIGATE TO - FAVORITE and the entry is STILL in the list.

Minor issue, but a little annoying.

If something can be done then great. Excellen work on the current update, application is superb with this now completed.

Thanks

G

May I ask two questions?

1. Where in the UK can I but McGuider Europe 2009? Expansys comes up on Google, but they seem t be saying it is on pre-order.

2. The iPhone news is brilliant! Are there any dates?

All the best,
TC

The best place to buy it is through the www.mcguider.com web site, only took 2 days for mine to arrive, you can even have next day if you want.

Regarding the Iphone application, dont know much about that, I would guess that McGuider have to wait until Apple give the green light, reading in the various forums and mags, that could be some time yet.

I would suggest going direct to TeleAtlas (this is what happens when you order from McGuider.com btw). You pay slightly more but they are the only place I know that currently has stock on the 2009 version

My guess is the delay is due to Apple not agreeing to the launch, especially since the T&C for the phone OS seem to exclude satnavs if I have understood them correctly.

Again a bit off-topic, but not too much off 😊

Today a good turn-by-turn gps was released for the iPhone through App Store! This means that finally Apple is ready to accept this, as long as there is no voice guidance. I hope Sygic takes note of that and if their first attempt at app store is dismissed, just cut the voice, insert a beep or whatever instead when a turn is coming up and try again. Because you make really awesome software and the more money you earn, the more resources can be spent in development. Meaning that also the S60 version discussed here can get more attention and better support. So go for it, guys 😊

Thats right - the iPhone SDK explicitly prohibits development of turn-by-turn mapping applications, which is unbelievably bizarre for a device with on-board GPS!!!!

I believe TomTom had the same issues - basic app was developed but screwed by the SDK T&Cs.

1. Congratulations! 😊

2. Any chance of more high resoultion video?

3. Any chance of a video showing sharp turns?

4. How DOES the iPhone deal with sharp turns? In my experience the GPS is not quite up to the quality of the Nokia in speed/reaction time?

5. I'd buy this software the moment I get the chance. Even a prerelease/Cydia release or whatever. Just PM me 😉

Still not on Applestore. :frown:

I know its totally possible for such a product to be written for the iPhone, but the catch - as TomTom found, is that the SDK explicitly prohibits development of turn-by-turn mapping.

There's also the issue that the iPhone doesn't (currently) support background processing, so you can't have the GPS app running in the background whilst taking a call, or if you wanted to take a picture .... all features that Symbian has always allowed.

So ... what's new in CeBit for Sygic ?

The picture present an iPhone, but announce a New version of Sygic 2009. Is it only for Apple, or a global new product ?
No GPS websites are presenting anything ...

Update on March 5th : a french website have met Sygic people in CeBit
http://gpsandco.com/news/2009-03-05/id5746/Video-Sygic-notre-application-de-navigation-GPS-pour-l-iPhone-via-l-AppStore-dans-1-mois/

They talk about Sygic availibility on iPhone, Nokia 5800, Nokia N97, ... but not precise detail concerning the version dedicated to these models.
Moreover, even if the real new product is for iPhone platform, the current 7.7 is not mentionning on McGuider or Sygic websites a support for 5800 (ever sold) or N97.

Let's wait and see...

The Sygic Mobil 2009 will be/is available for all platforms ( Symbian, Touch Symbian (5800), Windows Mobile, and probably for UIQ ). If we will get green for applestore, then also for iPhone.
Price is still 79Eur.

Sonym,
You have any knowledge wether or not your company would consider selling the program via the brand new Cydia Store, if Apple completely rejects you?

Admin/MOD:
Very sorry for off topic and I respect if you yell at me for it, but it's the only way I know of to get direct info from Sygic. Besides, it's all that's happening in this thread right now 😊

I am interested in the continued development of sygic, especially on the 5800.

I am running Garmin at the moment, but would like to try sygic again.

However, this means a new version and new maps, which I shall have to shell out for again.

I want to know if it will be worth the money this time, as the previous version wasn't even up to a review.

I'm intrigued by this as well. If, as has been said on various forums and articles since the iPhone SDK appeared, they will not "allow" development of turn-by-turn mapping applications (even though there's no technical reason why it can't be done), would they try to leverage legal pressures to stop release of the application.

From the looks of it the Cydia store would be a poor alternative to the Apple store, and it would be ridiculous if McGuider had to be released via that route.

Hi Sonym
Your new Poiconvertor is very good, but could be better if be possible multiple batch conversion to txt and vice versa.
I have plenty of upi to edit and I would like to convert to txt all at once.
After text edit I would like to convert back to upi again. It is possible with Poiconvertor ?
Anyway thx for "convert old upi... "option.

This batch conversion process (I would suggest using icon filename the same as the txt filename eg petrol.txt would use petrol.bmp as its icon and petrol.upi as its output format) is my no1 wish for poiconvertor. Without this I am having to resort to batch files, which whilst workable, is a real paint to setup and keep up to date.

If you want, crate a .bat file with this inside:

@echo off

set prog="Poi Convertor"
rem set prog=echo

FOR /F %%i IN ('dir *.txt /b /s'😉 DO (
%prog% %%i %%~ni.bmp %%~di%%~pi%%~ni.upi
)

Put it to main folder with Poi Convertor.exe with txt files. It will search folders recursive and will create one upi file for each txt file in the txt file folder.
Bitmap file name will be same as txt file. Bitmaps do not have to exist. It stores only name in upi file.

sonym,

There is a user over at PocketGPSWorld who has said he has no bmp in his icons directory but is still showing the icons he placed in the folder with his txt files. The only thing different for him is he is using the updated version of McGuider that was pulled from MGA last month (the one that fixed the crashing with custom POI problem).
Does the convertor embed the bmp file into the upi format as well, allowing the new software release to run without external bmp files? This is the only way I can see for his script to work as he uses a path to the bmp file.

No, upi file format has only file bmp name stored inside. Path to this bmp file is always /Res/Icons/xy.bmp; If there is not such bmp file, default gray icon is used with "?" So you dont need specify correct/real bmp files during conversion. Convertor takes only file name from it.

Very odd then as the convertion script he wrote for the PGPSW speed camera database definately doesn't work for me because of the file path he has defined on the bmp file. When I challenged him in the thread I linked to in my first post, he said that he has no bmp files on his phone.
I saw the grey ? icon when I initially used his script. I modified it to remove the file path on the bmp and got it working properly for me. The only conclusion we could come to was the bugfix version dealt with the bmp files differently.

Well, he made something wrong. It is as I say.
Bug fix doesnt change anything.
Upi files are without bmb files. ( there's only file name without path )

My guess is he still has bmp files in the icon folder (in his case the res\icons\in folder) but didn't realise it. Whatever it is though, the script is working for me and I am getting a better understanding of the file format with each little discovery.

BTW I found out about not needing the actual bmp file quite a while ago when I wrote a batch file to do this job (just not a neat as these scripts).

Than You Sonym. Your script working well.
I would like to do same operation other way. (Multiple upi files convert to txt with same name as upi) In some very old version was an option for it. Unfortunately latest version batch conversion is only one way.

SonyM,

Is there any fix on the deleting POI problem ??? also, recently I have been using the application a great deal due to my travelling, I have found that after using the application for a sustained period, once I close it down, my phone (Nokia E71) is just about unuseable until I do a reboot. It would seem that the application has grabbed all avail memory and does'nt release it once its closed down.

Any information on this or the delete item ???

Thanks

Graeme

P.S do you work Milos ?? (good guy)

Resonate1 wrote:So when can we expect this app on the Nokia 5800? My 5800 is incomplete without it!

I am not sure, but probably you will be able download it as McGuider 2009 update soon. I will try get more info about it.

So Sonym, have you succeeded in reaching some news concerning Nokia 5800 Sygic/McGuider compatibility update ?
