The first major firmware update, version 20.0.0.12, for the Nokia 5800 Xpress Music is now available. You can update either using PC Suite or over-the-air (OTA). The 5800 does have user data preservation, which means your data should be retained during the update, but it is still advisable to do a back up before carrying out the update. Read on for more.
Read on in the full article.
While this update seems to be available for UK generic handsets, it may be that other regions / product codes don't have it yet.
This update is VERY new, so give Nokia some time to make it available to everyone. (hopefully this will be only a matter of days)
Just to let everyone know, I can confirm its out for APAC users (atleast for the India Product Code). Only via OTA though. NSU didnt find any update.
Good point Stu - I'll add a note to that effect to the main story. We're investigating what's new as well obviously and will be adding to the story.
It's not available for the UK generic (red) code 0575581 yet using FOTA.
The NSU only offers the pointless 11.009.
A few people have mentioned on Nokia Discussions that Geo tagging has been added to the camera and that home screen plugins can be changed like the E Series phones. Can't confirm this as its not available to me yet in the UK.
There is indeed a new option for the homescreen, with regular Active Standby activated, but it doesn't allow any new options, only to disable the options that were already there. It's still a completely useless Active Standby, considering the massive amount of screen real estate they have to use.
For the Euro1 product code too the update is available OTA but not (yet?) through NSU.
It's available OTA in Finland, I'm just downloading it now onto a SIM-free device.
(Oddly the previous update wasn't available OTA here...)
Some minor stuff:
-The old Download and Podcasting icons have been replaced with ones done in the new S60 5th Edition style.
-The active app dot has changed (I think it looks a bit uglier now...)
-Some other icons have been replaced, touch input now makes it clearer that it only covers handwriting
i did the update over the air using wifi. it's an 11mb download. no need to ac charger to be connected.
web orientation switching is faster
gallery thumbnail viewing is faster, and switching the orientation shows a fade effect in the photo
new search application which does local searching
new dictionary application which features multi languages
new app update application (i thought this was the new app store by nokia but it was empty when i opened it and it seems to updated existing application.. not sure what it does yet)
edit: camera has geotagging, and can shoot using the secondary camera.
automatic retrieval for gmail can finally be enabled.

How good is Nokia at propagating these firmware updates down to other language regions? My handset is from Indonesia, and it's still saying that the latest version is 10.0.010 (both OTA and NSU).
I just have bad memories of Sony Ericsson never propagating all their P990i firmware updates to some of the other Asia-regions...
Yes. There's an issue with lock codes.
If anyone has managed to update to V20, then get a lock code to work... please tell us what that code was.
guys i just updated, my lock code was 65000, and its not working now!! i tried 12345 i tried the remote locking code i tried 65000 atleast 5 times, got it temporarily locked too many times till now!! please help!!!!!!
Could someone please check if it fixed Podcasts & Music Player integration as described here (Point 6)?
The update OTA works fine here in The Netherlands. My first impression: not really faster the the 11 version. No need to do a softreset. But i have to test if i do not get the 'license' error after trying to install extra software.
The unlock code was my sim lock code, after that i could use the phone again.

Could you or someone else clarify this?
Are you saying that you CAN add "Email" and "Text message" plugins or are you saying that you can just DISABLE "Calendar" or "Search" or "Shortcuts"?
Thanks!
Did they include the compatibility mode that was missing from the original firmware?

i wish i could say the same, buddy...
Sadly, no fix for the lock code problem yet... this sucks.... nokia, fix it please!!!!! 😞
Dear rcxAsh!
Hungarian firmware released today for SIM free 5800...
Hi,
Not available for me, RED UK model, purchased on release day from regent street.
Only tried OTA, will try cable when I get home, Pity the 5800 doesnt have a standard mini usb port, otherwise I could try now.
Anyone else with a UK phone managed to update?
hi...
anyone having problem with search and dictionary after firmware upgraded to v20?
my search is having system error after i done with reset
my dictionary had no respond after i tap on it...
any comment?
Staying true to form Nokia seem to have released the upgrade for Blue UK generic phones but not Red ones.
I can just about understand how they could screw this up just after the phones UK release but they don't even have that excuse now.
(Course with this lock bug that some people seem to be suffering from we red phone owners might be the lucky ones 😉 )
Just to update, there is no update available vie the NSU for my generic RED UK phone either 😞
Are you saying that even after a successful *#7780# reset you're still having 'system error'? In which apps?
