The Nokia N86 wins the race to v20 firmware

479 replies · 138,356 views · Started 30 September 2009

Updated to v20 tonight using NSU. No problem but now that i have it the phone (imo) feels a tad slower. Not impressed!! Plus the Music icon in Menu has now turned into a folder which is ridiculous and very strange indeed (i mean, why???) but i can live with it.

I have also noted i do have some of the bugs/issues which have already been mentioned by the users who updated to v20 through FOTA.

It does seem all the improvements have been made to the camera which is understandable but it would have been nice if they could have fixed the previous bugs and just maybe added something extra to the phone itself. I do wonder when v30 will be released or will it be v21.....

Nokia PC Suite. I thought it would fix my problem.

Auto mode produces blurry pics, its like Close-Up and Auto is interchanged 😃

I just uploadet some real Close-Up photos:

😎

The sky in some of those pictures turned all white.

I've read a long time ago before I had the phone somewhere can't recall where that the landscape mode was producing better quality than auto mode. Landscape mode doesn't look good indoors, but it's not intended for it.

Can't you move the icon back to the root folder? Open folder, options, move. I still don't have v20. It will probably be plentiful late as was the release of the NAM.

This is why I used Exp. compensation +0.3 or +0.7 because of the cloudy weather. Better you can see the buildings in good light. 😊 The grey sky wasn't very beautifull this days.

What makes this Exposure compensation exactly? Is this a software thing or does it open the shutter wider or longer?

To put it simply, the EV button allows your to quickly underexpose (darken) or overexpose (brighten) your image. How it works is pretty simple. When youre taking a photo, the cameras job is to adjust itself by changing the shutter speed and/or apperture to properly expose your shot so that its not too bright or too dark. Some cameras do this better than others but thats another story. 😉 When you play with the EV button, what youre doing is telling the camera to either brighten or darken the photo from the optimal exposure it perceives.

Had the same issue, hard reset *#7370# will resolve your problem. Please note that all your contacts/messages/calendar entries will be gone, so do back up before that.

ok i've held my tongue long enough now

how in gods name can nokia release software like NSU that is so riddled with bugs and other quality issues?? it defies belief

as a software engineer of many years i know i would have been fired for releasing such low quality software

crashes ... incompatibilities ... meaningless or non-existent error messages to help diagnose problems ... never mind ignoring the UI guidelines for the platform (and the cross-platform argument does not apply here as they only release for windows)

and they wonder why their market share just plummeted and they lost $800+ million this quarter??!!??

i would advise them to get used to that kind of performance if they don't get their damn act together and start treating customers as your friends rather than cows to be milked and problems to be dealt with as cheaply as possible

having spent $2000+ on high end nokia devices in the last 18 months i can safely say they will not be seeing another cent of my hard earned money ... i think a platform like android will be better supported and maintained

disgusting nokia... massive fail

That is your opinion, mate. I'm working as a software engineer too, so what ? I've done the latest firmware update without any problems (the same as with my previous E51), and all the problems I have are minor.

And besides, this thread is about N86 v20 firmware and not about "ohmygod-nokia-you-suck-so-much"

and my complete lack of a way to actually get it installed

so thanks for your opinion and all but frankly my dear...

Well having finally managed to get v20 installed, I am impressed with the camera aspect of the improvements, but still fuming with the BUG list that is unfixed, as I can now confirm most are still present.

@ Damian Dinning,

I think it high time you provided us with a ready and easy means of letting the correct person within Nokia know of the Bugs that persist even in v20.

Because its simply NOT FAIR of us to keep hitting poor YOU with all of these, when they are not really your responsibility.

The camera side of things is good, and that's really your bit.

But it's still RIDDLED with large bugs in other aspects of the OS itself, and its souring things with us keep reporting these all to you.

You should be on here to be congratulated for the GOOD work that has been done on the camera.

Not feel let down, reading about yet another big bug with the rest of the FW etc.

So please mate, let us know the best way to convey these issues straight to the correct channels.

(And that's not to say, "just contact Nokia Care" - the last time I did this I had five weeks of hell, ten broken promises of a call back, a foreign CS Staffer who kept SWEARING down the phone - seriously, and it eventually got so bad, only a recorded delivery letter to Nokia UK with the threat of Court Action finally resolved it, by way of a free E90 phone).

So I would rather have a more useful, direct, and appropriate channel than that.

But I DON'T want to keep spoiling things for you Damian, when in fairness, what you should be hearing for your part in this, is congratulations.

So please, let someone else hear the BAD stuff - give us a method of contact so I can flag up all the continuing bugs in v20

(For one example, I still can't send a text message to multiple contacts, as when you do, the Contacts list doesn't even show you half your phonebook members when choosing the second recipient - if I can't even use the phone as intended, I tend to see these sort of things as Biggys).

So well done on a great CAMERA-centric firmware Damian, but the rest of it is still DIRE, utterly dire, so please give us someone else to aim this at, not your own poor self who should be hearing only good news in terms of the camera side of things.

Totally agree with above comment!

Just some side note, I find NSD forum quite lame, if you check N86 discussion on v20 bugs, there is not a single post from Nokia folks. What's the point of having dedicated forum if no one participates?

Cheers,
Miki

Only Damian is close to us (customer), but he did a good work 😊

The other guys are working on all the bugs and have no time to post 😉

Yeah, exactly. We can keep posting, hoping that maybe somebody from Nokia will take a look at it someday.

Probably DamianDinning is our only hope 😉

Some simple firmware changes I would like:

Allow alarms to have multiple weekly days. Monday and Wednesday and Friday for one my classes requires three alarms. When the alarm is deactivated, you can’t read the description. I use another third-party to cover the above.

Allow multiple user-defined camera settings.

Allow EAP-PEAP/MSCHAPv2 without a stupid certificate. Windows does this. I can't access this one Wi-Fi spot. I’ve logged into several others but this one requires EAP-PEAP. I've contacted them and they just say a certificate isn't needed. I haven’t tried every certificate yet, but there are a lot of them. See more here: http://discussion.forum.nokia.com/forum//forum/thread/123382/

When I'm in the music library and choose all songs, it lists my video files with an "X" beside the file. Why are they even there?

To "really annoyed", I never had a problem with NSU. Nokia is trying to make Ovi replace the Nokia PC Suite. I used the 1.1 version. Talk about overkill and resource hog and confusing to use. I don't really have a problem with the bugs. It's the camera hardware on all the N86s I get that keep fucking me over.

Their customer support is very bad. It took me 30 minutes on the phone to get something resolved. It was mostly holding and being forwarded to other people. They were all foreigners. The first time I called I hung up, because it took so long, and they never picked up.

At http://www.nokiausa.com/ if you're viewing the web pages like the products between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. on Monday through Friday you can chat with a customer representative. Sadly they have little knowledge of the products and just say to contact customer support when you ask something they don't know which was most of my questions.

There was one, but it wasn't very informative. http://discussions.europe.nokia.com/discussions/board/message?board.id=swupdate&message.id=58853#M58853

Hi all.

Thanks for those kind words.

Hmm camera expert I maybe but couldn't have led concepting work on multiple devices if that's all I could do 😉

I have just moved on to a new role within Nokia (still related to Nseries) but it will be hard for me to give as much time to this forum and others. But you can reach me on twitter if you need to I'm known as PhoneDaz there.

I'll still be reading forums such as this and others but just because you don't see me doesn't mean I'm not listening.

I have made sure that the team now working with N86 are following this thread amongst others. That is not a promise that everything will get done to your personal preferences but will mean that at least you know someone is listening from time to time.

atb, see you round.

I have just discovered a huge bug in messages menu.
Here is how to reproduce it:

1) Go to Messages -> New Message -> message
2) Press "Down" to go to the message writing area
3) Press "#", to change writing mode (from "Abc" to "abc", for example)
4) Now try to write something (a word for example). Nothing happens - you can't write anything!

I discovered, that in this case the phone goes to "select text" mode, that is why you can't write. You can see this, by doing this:
1) Go to Messages -> New Message -> message
2) Press "Down" to go to the message writing area
3) Write a word (for example: test)
4) Press "#", to change writing mode (from "Abc" to "abc", for example)
5) Press "Left" -> you are now selecting the text, instead of simply moving the cursor!

Anyone has this bug also ? In my opinion this is really huge ...
I have N86 with 20.115 firmware, custom version 20.115.54.1

Another thing I don't like is the volume increment of 10 when viewing music or video. Couldn't it at least be 5 or 2?

Also I read removing the N-Gage app frees 10MB of the C drive if you don't need it. 10MB is a lot considering there's only 74-75MB total.

I have no such problems

I also don't like wallpaper doesn't go fullscreen, but as Damian already said this will not be corrected (though it's working fine on 6720).

ps. off-topic but in Firefox when I click edit option, it opens edit screen, however I can't save it. I have to edit my posts via Opera or IE. Anyone with such problem?

Cheers,
Miki

If the wallpaper doesn't use the whole 240x320 pixels, then how many pixels are being used? I could take a screenshot then find out, but I'm not at my computer right now.

No, I can edit my posts with Firefox 3.5.3. I guess you could right click the edit button, choose "copy link location", then paste into another tab.

Edit: Actually it looks like they cut out part of the wallpaper. Best thing to do is add top and bottom horizontal black bar to make your image to be used for wallpaper. I don't see why the programmers can't fix that. All they have to do is resize the image for that viewable area and shift it some pixels. How hard is that?

re wallpaper: top (signal strength/operator name/ battery meter) and bottom (soft keys area) parts are cutoff. In 6720, as I said wallpaper (same one) does go full screen.

re firefox: so it must be my extensions

Thanks

Disable all the extensions to find out. If that's the culprit, then enable one by one to determine which one is causing the problem.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a guide to de-branding the N86, there isn't too much info on the web , and as it doesn't have it's own forum i'm struggling.

I have in the past i have de-branded numerous N95's nad will be doing my n97 when i get it next week.
But i'm stuck for info on this phone.

Can't even find any standard euro product codes anywhere

I like to use the Close-Up mode even for landscape or buildings.

I noticed, that the Close-Up mode pictures get darker and have vivid colours compared to the Auto mode.

Did Nokia tuned the Close-Up mode in terms of exposure, sharpness or colour? 😕

No more Damian Dinning on the N86 thread - i'm gutted! Who do we talk to now? 😞

After full reset, the problem is gone.

I got my replacement today. White balance on it is better than the last camera. I think the LED was overpowering on the last one.

There is still no v20 available for me. :icon13:
