Useful helps : Full phone formatting a 6600!
One possibility: You could format it with a PC based MMC reader.
I have tried the green + * + 3 key combination and the format does not work when I switch the phone back on. I am going to try the other method of *#7370#, will this remove all the rubbish on the phone.
You'll find "all" codes for the Nokia 6600 (in german) here: Removed
The formatting of the phone is doable for me, but I have an even more pressing questions: What restore can be done after the format?
I always do a FULL backup of my 6600 using the MMC application AND the NOkia PC Suite. Now, if I format my phone back to it's factory setting, my questions are:
1. SELECTIVE RESTORE
One thing that I want to restore after format is my "Contact" informations. After re-format and re-connecting to PC Suite (PCS), PCS will prompt that the phone has never been sync'ed before and need to do that. Now, if I do this, would PCS:
a). OVERWRITE the "old" Nokia data from the phone prior to the format... OR ....
b). ADD the data to the old one.
If b). is true, then I can just easily do a "Contact" restore after format and sync to PCS
2. APPS installed on MMC
I know that apps. installed on the MMC will stay there even after the phone has been re-formatted, but after the format, can I still use the application or need to re-install? I guess I am asking this questions from the point of view of Windows: You can install Windows on C:\, apps. on D:\, but if Windows is re-installed on C:\; all the apps on D:\ must be re-installed.
If indeed the apps. on the MMC need to be reinstalled, that means I have to uninstall the MMC apps PRIOR to format.
Please let me know. Thanks!
I have just finished the hard format of my phone and using the Nokia Suite carried out a full restore. I had to give a new name for the phone and then carried out the restore by selecting a different device.
This has restored all previous data to my phone including the apps and they all work ok.
Scott,
When you sync with the PC Suite (PCS) app for the 1st time, isn't PCS will prompt you to do 1st TIME BACKUP on the newly-formatted phone? This would means that your previous data will be overwritten.

I had no problems with the Nokia Suite, I was not asked to carry out a 1st time backup.
Just a question.....how do i back up my contact into the MMC Card?
Launch the "Memory" (Memory card) application, hit "Options" and select "Backup phone mem." from the menu.
hi all,how could i transfer msgs from the phone memory to the mmc>???coz i want 2 format my mob. ??
thanx
Search the forum and RTFM.
I looked everywhere for someone to tell me how to handle my problem with my 6600. It is an incredible unit but beware of those 3rd party apps floating around. There I was in the office fiddling around all happy from successfully pairing up my PC and phone. Downloading ringtones wirelessly through Suite PC in amazement like I was fresh off the boat or something. After I got tired of downloading every imaginable version of the Mission Impossible theme I ventured to Themes and apps. The themes were just great but when I got to the apps I made the mistake of installing a trial version of "HOT LOCK". I wasn' t too pleased with it so when I decided to remove it that's when the kaka hit the fan. I won't even get into the calendar screwing up but let's just say the OS crashed every 2 minutes.
Thanks to you folks here at allaboutsymbian I'm fiddling with my joystick again. Tomorrow I go the the office and get N'sync'd with Outlook for all my lost contacts and I'm back in business. Almost bought another phone there for a second. THANKS AGAIN!
The moral is: watch out for them apps!

That's a very good moral!
But let's face it. When we get our 6600s we all need to play with them a lot more than they can handle. And after we're done playing and installing every single thing we can find we do mostly find ourselves using just 1-2 extra apps and just using it as a phone again 😃
I don't respectfully agree with what is said by Reallis. I use my 6600 ofr professional reasons and thanks to the 6600 for instance I don't need anymore my palm, I can make pictures and send them directly to my Customers. It's really a powerful tool,

The 6600 is indeed a very powerful tool. I also have managed to formulate my previous response incorrectly; I meant to say that after a few weeks of installing most every application we revert to the standard phone applications and some extra applications we deem necessary for whatever it is that we do.
'sides, we all have a right to an opinion 😃. I would've wanted for the 6600 to be stereo, though; or at least compatible with the Nokia Music Player...
I don't use it that profesionally 😃
Hi I have a 6600 on Orange. Since formatting I have lost the Orange backup and update software. Would anybody be able to send it to me of their Nokia 6600 phone.
please send to
Much appreciated
Thanks for posing this question: Does anyone have an answer here? I would intuitively think that a manual removal of programs saved to the MMC would need to be performed prior to reformatting the phone. Otherwise, the apps wouldn't be properly registered with the OS. Thanks...

2.True.If you format the phone all the install records from C:\ will be gone. There will be no problems with the apps except for the ones that keep their save data on the C: drive and you will not be able to uninstall them the proper way.
Will the the format remove network provider customisation or is this also restored along with the OS???
Also, will formatting the phone invalidate the warranty?
Hi,
I have installed qoffice and it crashed my 6600 and i had to figure out a new method to format my memory card and here is it how to do that....
1) Switch off your phone.
2) Remove the back cover and remove the memory card and make sure that you don't pmove back the clip which locks the memory card. Push it fully to the simcard side.
3) Putback the battery and switch on the phone but don't put the back cover of the phone. After the phone is fully switched on, go to the "Extras" folder and keep the focus on the "Memory" application so that you can start the application with one click.
4) Now keep the phone on a flat surface and slowly lisf the back side of the battery(the side which don't have the connectors). Make sure that the battery connnectors are touching so that phone will not switch off.
5) Now insert the memory card the the gap between the battery and phone. Don't worry about puting back the memory card lock.
6) Press the battery down so that it will press the memory card in the correct place. Now you have a phone with memory card installed.
7) Start the "Memory" application to format it.
8) Thats it!! Reinstall all your programs and Enjoy 😊
Good luck,
Sudhish K V.

Sorry for the spelling

is that like autolock? Timers doing OS functions untested on 6600 are probably all bad.
No disrespect here,
But does *#7370# bring up the same formatting menu with the black bar working slowly across the screen from left to right? Maybe it is the same thing only the key combination is for people who have completely crashed phones. OTOH it might be better to 'hard format it' since you are starting from a completely unbooted state. I already did the key one and my phones ok (solved part of its problems) so I know the other one *#7370# won't do anymore help, but I'm just curious as to if the *#7370# does the exact same format (since you're not safebooting when you do it).
GD? What does that code show on the phone screen. It's really important to me because there's no way in hell I'm bringing my phone in to a service center (21 days turnaround for tmo-us)...well and there's that clown who works at one.
Jason,i don't know,i never formated a 6600.On other S60 devices there is no black bar.

Cool thanks, I'm guessing the yoga button push is probably the best full format. Since you're essentially going into safe mode. Anyone else seen the full white screen w/ the word formatting and the black bar wash from left to right w/ the code instead of the yogapush?
hi, when i read about the ful formatting of nokia 6600, i tried that. hey man its really works but also cause some problems for my 6600. the first and the biggest problem is: when we go to settings then call settings we find there a option of "line for outgoing call: line 1 or line 2" after formating in my phone this option is missing. i mean to say that i m now not able to change my phone line. i tried it by pressing # key for long time but it ditn't work. also when in profile we select ringtone there is a option that ringtone for line 1 and ringtone for line 2 but in my phone this is also missing but only after formatting. before formating i m sure it was all ok. in short i can say that now there is no line 2 kind of thing in my phone.
the second problem which i m facing is: after formating i m not able to connect my personal computer to the internet by using my nokia 6600 through bluetooth. befor that i was very easly able to do so but after formating it is not possible to do so. i can exchange other data using bluetooth but not able to connect my pc to internet. and listen on my phone i can surf net very well ( i know it may sounds funny but believe me its true).
thirs problem is: i was using opera browser for net surfing on my 6600. but after formating phone, whenever i open opera i recieve eveluation period mesg"you hav 14 days left of ur evaluation period". and when those 14 days finished i m not able to use opera.i reinstalled that software but it also did't work.
so please tell me what is all this and how can i overcome these problems mainly first two of them.
i will be very thank ful to u.
waiting for quick and positive reply.

Ok, I don't even have the option of line 1 or line 2. It's either coded in or out by your service provider OR it's not recognizing it from your SIM. It seems like when you hard format you erase everything, then the phone sets itself up from the ROM which contains the original firmware. In your case the service provider may have patched into the phone memory instead of the firmware to add features so a full factory reset like this gives you the closest to the default nokia setup you get (if this is the case you could try to reset operator settings or just call them). Otherwise you can try switching around whether you store on sim or on mem to see if it magically see's you have 2 lines and gives you them back from the sim. You can get an Opera key for free if you live anywhere but the US (I believe) I forget where I saw this, but it's something about nokia now including it w/ their phones and a licensing system.
Ere ya go:

If you format or change phones a nokia service cent(er)re can hash you out a new Opera code. Since some service center(re)'s aren't aware they can do this you can also email Opera for it. This is because your phone came w/ it as a complementary app. It's all on that page, but you should at least get that one sorted.
