hello guys.. any news / progress in investigating nokia 9500 skins?
Soon to be released: SkinStudio for 9300/9500. This application allows you to completely customize your Communicator's skin (only basic skins (skn files) at the moment, ske files are not included in this version).
Features:
- Customize ALL skin colors
- Choose graphics (with preview option) from other skins to be used in your own skin
- Automatically generates all needed graphics from one master bitmap (755x200)
And the best part:
- Works with all existing created skins. Just copy them to the correct folder on your Communicator and you can instantly modify and install them.
- No more "Note: already exists" errors with "Display" applet in Control Panel.
- Install and activate skins without the need to reboot (which makes testing a new skin really easy).
- Automatically change desk and cover graphic
SkinStudio will be freeware and will run right on your Communicator. I still need to do some sanity checking and finish the last part of the skin generation, but I expect to be able to release it beginning next week.

Arjen thats great news! I'm sure no one can wait for that. I always used to miss themes which were there in my earlier s60 phone. I guess this wait for skins on my commy will end soon. All the best buddy.

It's amazing what you can find if you browse the S80 SDK and the header files 😊 The entire documentation how to install skins without the need to reboot is in skin.h. I only had to add one single function to my OPX to reload the skin.
The "Already exists" error is because of duplicate UID's. All custom skins now use a UID from an existing skin. This causes the error. SkinStudio automatically converts existing skins to use the (unique) SkinStudio Skin UID.
The automatic changing of desk and cover background is done by using an undocumented class RSharedDataClient that allows you to modify files in C:\System\SharedData. The file "10004fef.ini" in this folder contains the location of the desk and cover wallpapers. If you write into this file using this undocumented class, Cover UI and Desk get notified of the changes and reload their wallpapers. This is the feature I'm actually most content with. 😃
There are still some sniggles with SkinStudio at the moment (it works perfectly on my Communicator, but it fails on someone elses with an error). I still expect to be able to release a public beta this weekend or latest beginning next week.
Mr. Arjen i have a questtion.. is it possible to change the default splashscreen? upon searching through the s80 sdk i found the splashscreen.mbm in "Z:\system\data\" and splashscreen.dll to "Z:\system\programs\" and i open the file using a notepad and i found this ... Z : \ S Y S T E M \ D A T A \ S P L A S H S C R E E N . M B M. is it possible?? oh man.. if only i know the UID of the splashscreen.. hope to hear from you soon.. 😃
You can change the startup graphic on the phone cover, but as far as I know it is not possible to change the splashscreen in the PDA-side. As you can see all the data is hardcoded in splashscreen.dll which is also in ROM and therefore cannot be modified.
One thing you might try is to copy splashscreen.dll to C:\System\Programs and modify it with a hex editor to load the splashscreen from C:\System\Data. I'm not sure it will work though (probably not), but you never know. If you're going to try this, please inform us of the result.

I have my first skin fo you, its called AquaBlue OS X. Its the first skin you can install by a SIS-File. After the installation process you will find the Powerdesk and the Frontcover Wallpapers in folder C/Wallpapers.

I have a few questions...
I am trying to create a Skin using your SkinWizard for the computer...
All works fine...but at the end before compiling take place...i select the colour for the clock background & then when i click next..it shows me an error which says.... "List Index out of bounds (32)"
whats this error.????
if i create a skin based on blue skin & do everything but change the last field in the list which is the clock colour background, it works fine , but the moment i try changing the clock background...the comes an error...
can u help me with this???
@Hyper: thanks for the positive comments. It seems there are still some problems with SkinStudio though (like Messaging not working when a custom skin is installed). If anyone experiences this or other problems with SkinStudio, please send me an email at arjen at allaboutsymbian dot com with the skin that's causing the problems attached.
About SkinWizard: although this application was also written by a Dutch guy, I didn't write it. SkinWizard is written by Tijmen van Gulik. You should address problems with SkinWizard to him.

Arjen, great job on SkinStudio! My laptop just took its last breaths, so I can't really get into the skinning stuff right no. But I will get a new one in a couple of days, and will start making skins again. I'll be sure to leave some comments about SkinStudio then.

Raven i'd love to make skins myself but the problem is i m confused in making a skin with the SkinStudio as i cannot understand all the parameters inside it...i've tried making skins with the SkinWizard too & even succeeded in making them but then since i use PowerDesk i m not being able to get the PowerDesk wallpaper right...i just cannot come to know how to crop and how much to crop the image so as to make it suitable with PowerDesk...can u help me on this Raven? I just downloaded the version 1.0 on my home computer & its working fine.. will check & see what version is on my laptop, maybe its 0.9beta which is causing the error.
