Hi Rafe,

This is going to be a very random question. I have just bought a N95 in China but it doesn;t seem to have WLAN capability, naturally i am a bit miffed since it was one of the reasons I bought the phone.

It seems the N95's sold in china don;t have WLAN, my question is has the hardware been removed? or can the phone be hotwired by flicking some internal switchs to get the WLAN to fire up??

I hope you can help.

Thanks
Bhavesh

There's 2 possibilities...

1. The Chinese firmware is crippled to disable WLAN. De-brand the handset to Generic APAC1 firmware it and WLAN will be enabled

2. You have mistakenly bought a 'clone' N95 which is not a Genuine Nokia product but some cheaper less functionaly rich copy and not manufactured by Nokia. If this is the case, all you can do is take it back to the seller and try to get a refund/exchange.

I am sorry to say that this is wrong. I live in China and I had the same trouble.
But then I found a NOKIA Shop, which took back my phone "because there was something wrong with my screen" and i got my money back. Then I bought at an electronic Shop a NOKIA from Hongkong, which has the WLAN with the chinese Software on. Nokia told me clearly it is not a Software Problem but the Hardware for all WLAN Phones is taken out in China. Also the N80 etc..... so I hope you can find a shop to take back your phone. Good Luck

Thanks for correcting me 😉

hi, i was wondering if i could get some help.
i have a "3" contract and i wish to use my 3 sim card in my O2 n95. the phone works fine with the simcard in it but i want the planet 3 applications and the x series. along with being able to use my 3 internet access point. Thanks

hi, just found your site and registered. Very optimistic as to wether you can change my views on the N95 however? To be totally honest its the worst phone ive ever had. Got it in july and its been an ongoing nightmare. The software has had to be updated 6 times after totally crashing about ev 3wks. Just had it done again yesterday and it has ruined it all together now. Every single function i do is at a delayed reaction of about 5seconds. Ive stood by nokia phones for the last 20yrs but this is a scam of a phone when stated that its the best for access to internet etc etc and that it boasts so many amazing features when infact the software was never going to back them up. Sorry for negative and long message but as you,ve probably guessed, im so sick. That vodafone have received in the region of 200 a month instead of the contract fee of 45 makes it even worse when phone is so huge a problem.

Hello

First of all my apologies if you have already answered this query before but I am sick of searching the net and am hoping you will be able to point me in the right direction..

I brought a Nokia N95 and received it on Wednesday, I'm loving it so far (other than battery life) but I can not get the voice commands on my sat nav to work.. I have downloaded the maps from the nokia website and then purchased the one months voice commands to try it out via my mobile (as told to do my the Nokia helpdesk) BUT, it still doesnt work.. I phoned again and he gave me something else to do (go to map loader on Nokia website and download voice commands) but I cant find them and when I downloaded the maps again (as told to), it gave me three days free trial BUT still no bl00dy voice commands! I have made sure the volume is turned right up and that the phone isnt on silent etc but nothing - any ideas?

I am soooo tempted to send the phone back as so far its just one big hassle!

Thanks in advance if you are able to help!

i can tell u what i did bout so called sat nav. I downloaded google maps for free and it works gr8(bout the only thing that does mind) when i put a destination in and press for directions i then go to the options button and it has an activate simulation option, click yes and the voice starts straight away.

Bizarre thing! - some weeks ago I was in the middle of downloading a ringtone on my Nokia N95 from the web. The download didnt complete and I just left it at that. Ever since then, whenever people ring my phone they hear the ringtone I attempted to download, as opposed to the normal phone ring tone. I have no idea how this has happened and do not know how to remove it..help!

hi,

simple question ( i hope), when you create a new folder can you change its icon, or icons for any other applications for that matter,

is it possible to do this without having to redesign or create a brand new theme? or even better cna you download icons for the n95 anywhere

thanks

It sounds like you have a hardware fault like memory leakage or adressing problems but for whatever reason the service center just keeps reflashing the device which is a short term fix. I would try again but push for a replacement and threaten small claims court if necessary.
It is truly an amazing device but you seem to have had a faulty one followed by a series of inept repair jobs. I can happily say it is the best phone I've ever had and if you get yours sorted hopefully it'll change your opinion.

Hi, i am wondering if you can help me. I recently got my N95-8GB and last night it totally crashed on me. When i tried turning it on all i got was a white screen, i had to hold *, 3 and answer when booting to reformat my phone.

My question is, I lost my key for the Spiderman3 movie because of the format. I hadn't yet backed up my phone as it's only 3 days old, and i am wondering if i can get the key back in anyways?

I'm really annoyed about this, as it seems like such a great phone, but things like this ruin it!!

Any advice would be great! thanks

i'm trying to update the firmware on my phone, but it says i have the most up-to-date already. i'm on 11.0.026 and i thought version 12... was out? :con?

Depends on your network. Nokia release the firmware for unbranded devices but that then goes to the networks and they then release a version after they make their changes (branded icons, special themes, lock out certain apps etc). The nokia updater looks for the specific version for your product code.
This means if you have an Orange phone for example, you will only get the Orange V12 firmware when Orange release it, which will be later than the unbranded one.
If you don't want to wait you can change the phones product code to the non-branded one and the updater will then install that firmware. This means you'll get the 'clean' firmware without customisations (but that is really only a good thing). You can find out how by searching here for 'change product code'

oh, of course! i'm on vodaphone. will have a think about 'unlocking it'. will it kill warrenties, insurance, etc?

It will invalidate any warranty/insurance from your network provider but NOT the 1 year Nokia warranty. I have had mine in to a service center twice for repair while running the unbranded firmware (despite it being a T-Mobile handset) and they have fixed it without saying anything (the second time it had to be sent back to Nokia as well).

Most networks only supply insurance if you pay for it anyway (and getting it covered elsewhere is much cheaper) and don't offer any other cover.

hmm, this is tempting. i guess i might as well try. is there a way to reset it to vody settings if ever needed? (sorry for all the questions!)

The only way to revert to the branded firmware is to upgrade again using the vodaphone product code. This only works if there is an equal or newer vodafone firmware available as the updater won't allow you to downgrade

Hello Rafe, i have updated my n95 yesterday and the version available was 12.0.0.13 since then all the SMS i receive i get the sender as a phone number not as a contact name even though they are saved contacts. iv heard about an update 12.0.014 but when i use the software updater it always gives me the 12.0.013 version which means im up to date. i tried to change the product code using the youtube show how to change the code and i did
but still i get the same version 12.0.013.
can you please help me on that issue ?
thanks.

Hi, I was just wondering if you could help me with a couple of questions?

I wan't to debrand my phone, e.g take out the O2 Welcome screen when I turn my phone on and also change my screensaver to something else other then the O2 one.

Do you know of a program I can use to change these as I can't see an option on my N95, unless im being blind which is highly possible!

Also as you are probably aware some applications crash but I am still able to tab out of it, is TaskSpy a good application for ending programs or can you suggest another program to use?

Many thanks in advance for your help!!!
Mike

Temme this..whenever i install a theme, the new theme does not create it's own log in the application manager!..i just cannot remove it then from the phone..how do i avoid this problem???and of course there is always the expired certificate problem for which i have to change the date again and again..+if i dont like the theme and it's not there in the application manager..i cannot remove it beacuse like the n70 or the other older symbian phones you cannot 'delete' a theme..the app manager is the only way out.
please answer..i need to install some good themes on my phone...:con?

Had a quick look though the forum but didn't find the answer. I have download the route 66 and when I try to install it says there is a problem with the certificate. If the answer is on here please can someone point me in the right direction?

Thanks in advance.

change your phone date to anytime in 2006..and try reinstalling it..it'll work..change the date again..

There is no business card reader on N95? There is one on N73. Can we find it for N95? Is the developments of this soft planned?
Thanks, Herve

sharkyman wrote:Done (19th Nov 2006) and still the same error. Grr.

Ive just de-branded my N95 from O2 to a generic product code, I have sent the MMS / GPRS details from the O2 site and it just wont work!!! It all worked ok before, on the O2 V11 firmware. Any ideas?

What won't work, the whole phone?

andykn wrote:What won't work, the whole phone?

No, everything is fine and dandy after the update and all my phone is de-branded, just the MMS & GPRS don't work. Ive tried the built in settings wizard on the phone and also sent them from the nokia site & O2 with no joy!!!
