makem wrote:Hi I'm new to this but can you tell me if once you have downloaded the voices for the N95 sat nav are their any charges for each time you use it?
Not sure exactly what you mean here...
The voices are free to download but you can't use them for anything if you don't activate navigation (turn-by-turn guidance) which is not free. Navigation/guidance are purchased "per region" and you can choose between a 1w, 1m, 1y or 3y subscription.
Once purchased guidance you don't pay anything extra each time you use it.
superswede wrote:Haven't read the full thread som forgive me if I've missed something here but why are u using Navfone instead of the already integrated "Nokia Maps" which works well with the internal GPS and has maps for Phillipines as well?
Nokia maps uses network coverage thus my service provider is charging me for using it, but navfone is pre-installed in my n95 by nokia itself, and it's free of charge though quite hard to get connected to satellite.
Please correct me if I'm wrong that nokia maps is asking for network coverage.
Or maybe i have made wrong configurations of it. can you post your configuration of your nokia maps please?
thanks again. have a good day!
I downloaded the voices and then activated the navigation guidence which is all working fine. I've now had my first bill from my mobile phone provider who has charged me £40 for using the sat nav. They tell me that each time it's used it connects to the internet to transfer data for the turn by turn guidance which is charged at £3 per meg of data. surely once you pay to activate the sat nav should be free to use or am i missing the point?

the one charging you for turn by turn .. etc .. and your phone provider charging for the carrier over which the turn by turn data is delivered.
if you're using some pay as you go account then it could be quite expensive!
ask your phone provider if they have a fixed charge data service.
Good luck!😊
If i'm being charged by my provider to use the turn by turn guidence am i able to buy any other software to install on my N95 that will enable me to use the sat nav and not have to pay any charges to my phone provider for data transfer.
Hello Mr Rafe, actually I have a question if you could help me with
I need to have GPS software of the N95 is it possible to have it or it is just build in with the software phone
Thanks for Your Help

Well, I guess you're partially right. Nokia Maps does not have to use the network in order to load/download the maps. You can pre-download the maps to your phone/storage card using using your PC with "Nokia Map loader" installed.
However, I've noticed that Nokia Maps sometimes require a network connection to be able to plan a route (which is what you do if you're planning to use the "turn-by-turn" guidance). But it's not allways the case. Anyway, in thoose cases the amount of data sent & received are very small (some 7-20kb depending on how long and "complicated" the route is..).
And in addition you can disable the use of network from within Nokia Maps.
So, to sum up:
1. Pre-download maps to your phone using "Nokia Map loader".
2. Disable the use of network from within "Nokia Maps" (form within application select Options\Settings\Network\Network usage => "Never"😉
3. Try and plan routes. In thoose cases when it fails; enable network usage to be able to plan the route, when done disable network usage.
(...but as I said, as long as don't have to download any map details using the network (since you've pre-installed them) the amount of data transferred when using route-planning are usually very small.
Have just upgraded firmware and now find I have lost all the standby menus (and yes, I have turned it on in the settings menu).
When I turn standby menus off, I can see the front screen but when on, it goes the menu screen automatically.
Any advice!
Try a phone format (I know that happens after upgrade...) but do the format, just in case! It works for me on N73...

Did you restore from a PC Suite backup or Memory card backup? Never do this after flashing. Try formatting the internal memory with *#7370#
Post from Bowman:
N95 multimedia key problem
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lo all. Had my N95 since Friday and am fairly happy with it, but something happened today that I haven't seen mentioned here so I thought I'd see if anyone else has had this problem.
When setting up the multimedia key shortcuts I noticed in the settings there's an option for background images. You can select graphics, default images or my images. I selected my images and picked one of my pictures and it worked fine, it was used as the (soft focused and slightly blurry) background. After reading in the help section of the phone that when more than one picture is selected it will slideshow through them when in the multimedia screen, I added 4 more (you can have 5 in total). The phone started slideshowing through them but wasn't showing the program shortcuts so I backed out of the multimedia screen to the main screen and hit the multimedia key to access the menu again. The screen changed for about half a second then went back to the main screen, and wouldn't access the multimedia screen at all. Since you have to be in that screen to change the settings I was stuck with no access to the multimedia menu. Holding it down accessed the music player but that's it.
I tried a soft reset which didn't work so I had to do a hard reset, then restored the first backup I'd done after I'd added all my stuff to it. The multimedia key is back to normal again but I daren't change the background pictures setting in case the same happens. Anyone brave enough to see if they can change their settings? Oh, and my sw version is v10.0.018.
EDIT
Thought it was relevant, the pictures weren't ones I'd taken with the phone and were only small in size and small in filesize (about 50k each), so it's not a memory problem.
2nd EDIT
Ok, it appears the pictures have to be in the phone's memory and not on the memory card. Tried a few more times with different pictures (various filesizes, various dimensions) and had to reset the phone again both times. Copied the pics to the phone memory and it works fine. In the phone help file it mentions settings for the zooming and panning that the pictures do in the background (try it on your own phone to see what I mean) but these settings aren't shown on my phone.

I have EXACTLY the same problem. Will this work? What can I do?
Ok a little enquiry here. The standard battery for the N95 is 950mAh, but i found a third party 1000mAh battery that is claimed to be compatible.
I need to know if its safe to buy this battery and will the extra power make any difference.

By other list members - in the discussions on this topic .. particularly cheap batteries from China etc. I wouldn't bother unless the thing was over 12 or 1300mAh .. genuine Nokia batteries aren't that pricey.😊

Just short note about the using of the Nokia Maps.
I find it's outrageous and terrible that Nokia Maps do not have the "suggestion" features when you type the name of the street or city.
It's available only for country names.
I'm often abroad and some street names and town names sounds difficult and the written names are even more frustrating.
So what happened with me few times, the address would not be found only because I made a typo in 15 letters-long town name or in 20 letters long blah-blah-blah-strasse name.
So, guys, Nokia decided to give us the lesson (fairly expensive one) of grammatic of all world languages which maps are available to download.
Guys, be literate when using Nokia Maps application, it will safe you the time, the nerves and the money 😊

Agree. It's definitely one of the bigger drawbacks with N.Maps compared to f.i. TOMTOM. Apart from that I think that N.Maps is pretty OK although it in general requires quite lot of "clicks" in order to call functions. They should implement some short-keys in order to rapidly call up functions. If you for instance while driving want to check the satellite status you need some 7 clicks to get there and one could easily end up in the ditch while doing so... 😮
hi guys,is there a way to run the camera faster??i mean all the time when i open the cam it takes 5-6 sec to open if i swich with video another 5-6 sec the worst part is when i swich back from video to pic it takes 8-9 sec maybe more,u guys have the same problem??BTW i have the latest FW 11.x.xx i did my update after i change the product code with the euro one (i tried all most all the euro variants and some other to find a better FW)with NSS,it can damage the phone if i flash it to many times??i just want it to get the better one😊
I have tried installing .sis files using pc suite but I am getting the message"installation of filename.sis is not supported. Doesnt n95 support .sis files?
ish90an wrote:I have tried installing .sis files using pc suite but I am getting the message"installation of filename.sis is not supported. Doesnt n95 support .sis files?
There are 3 versions of S60 OS. 1st, 2nd and 3rd Edition. The N95 requires SIS or SISX files compiled for S60-3RD edition. I think your SIS file is probably for an older version.
Only sis files for S60v3 - not the old ones - S60v2!
Hi
I am after a microphone app.
I want to be able to speak into my N95 and it play the live sound through its speakers.
Why you ask? Well I bought an actual microphone but it plays far too quiet when plugged into the hifi that am using. I can plug my n95 into my hifis music port and play mp3's on the hifis loud speakers and it plays very well.
If I want to make an announcent currently (because there is just one jack on the hifi that does it all) I have to pause the track, unplug N95, plug the microphone in, turn the volume up really high so my voice can just be just heard, make announcement, unplug microphone, plug n95 mp3 back in, turn hifi volume back down and continue playing.
If I had a app on the n95 it would be simple case of opening it while music is still playing. Basically if you have and audio cable and an app that allows this your N95 can be a proper microphone.
So are there any live microphone apps out there?, sorry if I have used a long explination for a simple question.
Also what app can I get that allows me to record phone conversations?
And finally, does tomtom work yet on the n95 with and without a bluetooth GPS reciever? I have heard the reciever in the n95 aint all that, so it would be cool if it would connect with the bluetooth reciever I already own.
Thanks all who can help.
N95 and Psion - has anyone been able to use the infrared to send email, browse the Web etc on the Psion via an N95 please?
I've been wondering whether that combo might be better than getting an E90 given that the E90 keyboard doesn't seem that good compared with the Psion (I've posted the Register article link on another thread EDIT - ah, I see now that the article's been discussed here already, sorry!).
In fact, I was wondering (digression, I know), is there a list on the Web somewhere of which mobiles will work with the Psion 5mx or Revo etc? That would be very useful for those of us still wedded to our Psions and touchtype keyboards.
Thanks.
I cant find the two new menu arrangements on my T-Mobile N95. I have looks in the menu options bothe in settings and the main menu but i only get LIST and GRID.
Are they not included with the N95 or is this operator specific? The 6290 has it.

1) Ultimate Voice Recorder I find the best (personally) and there are many other programs, just look here on file sections or on Handango.com
2) More or less any navigation software which is designed for S60 v3 should work fine with N95. But no one third part navigation software does support inbuilt GPS receiver. The companies are working on the patch or new software realise to support N95 internal GPS receiver.
So if you want use TomTom , it's fine, but you must use the BT GPS mouse.
Personally I tried TomTom and Navicore on my N95 and everything went great.
Hi!
I was wondering if you know if NokiaN95 really has usb 2.0?
When i transfer stuff to my phone it takes forever..
Thanks for reply ralphlauren, will try tomtom and I may try that voice call software too. :icon14:
Anyone know how to make the N95's microphone output into a speaker?
Hi,
Thanks for such an in depth and detailed review.
One thing I am particularly interested in is the wifi / internet browsing capabilities.
Can you do a section of the review on the internet browsing?
What is it like using the keypad for browsing sites (for example, typing in the web url etc), reading or sending email, and searching the internet with Google for example?
Also, how does the camera and video camera stack up against the N93 / N93i please? Do you find it easier to take good pictures and video with the N95?
thanks
Philip
Hi,
I have a couple of questions...
First, is the GPS Receiver dependent on a local mobile phone tower or mast? Or will it work in the mountains so long as the battery has power and there are GPS satellites within line of sight?
Also, is it possible to treat the batteries of these models like digital camera batteries?
What I mean is, if I buy one or two spare batteries and charge them up, do they keep the charge until they are put in the phone (like my spare Canon IXUS batteries do), or do they start to lose the charge immediately for example like a laptop battery does?
thanks if anyone can answer this... I like hill walking out in the wilds, and it would be nice to think I wouldn't run out of power when lost!
